Can it be somewhere in between? I just don't buy him as an ace-caliber pitcher with this type of command. I suppose Blake Snell makes a 10-13% walk rate work, but that's because he just misses SO many bats. Gil has a slightly above-average K% and an average swinging-strike rate. Unless he's going to improve the command by leaps and bounds, I don't think he's a No. 1 type of pitcher. He was still very good this year, don't get me wrong, but the .230 BABIP or whatever it was did a lot of heavy lifting

Club options have the benefit of increasing a player's consecutive time with a team, which is better for fans.  MLBTR is very frustrating when they frame everything as players vs owners.  It's really player greed via free agency vs fans falling in love with players over their career.

When teams are putting club options onto a deal, they're not thinking "this is great for fans"
