What would it take to get Fried from Braves?
Steve Adams
12:44
A disastrous, injury-riddled first half from the rest of the Braves that rendered them completely out of contention?
Even then I don't think they'd aggressively shop Fried or anything, but Anthopoulos would probably listen at least. I don't expect Fried to be traded even if they don't/can't extend him.

Who is the first Pirates $100 Million contract? Which happens first: A Pirates $100M contract or a $500M contract?
Steve Adams
12:46
This is fun!

I'll say O'Neil Cruz gets the $100MM deal after a breakout 2023 season. But... an extension might not happen until next spring, and there's a chance Ohtani can reach $500MM in free agency next winter... close one.
12:48
I think there's enough room for Ohtani to diminish his stock that he's not a lock for $500MM next winter or anything. To get 500, he'd need a pretty ideal walk year. And after him, Soto's the only real chance on the horizon. So you've got two chances for the half-billion deal in the next few years, and both need things to play out pretty perfectly to get there.

Pirates have boatloads of young talent coming, and it's reasonable enough that after a breakout year, the team puts forth some kind of nine- or ten-year extension offer worth 100+.

I'll take the Pirates.

I enjoyed that question more than any sane person would, ha.

How does McNeil extension with Mets impact Reynolds negotiations
Steve Adams
12:48
It doesn't? I don't expect Bryan Reynolds to move, and I don't expect the Mets to be the team to get him even if the Pirates do trade him.

It was announced today that Brock Purdy of the 49ers needs Tommy John surgery. Is he the first non-baseball player to have that operation? I’ve never heard of a football player with that type of injury before.
Steve Adams

I can't think of any off hand but I'm sure that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. One of my good friends had Tommy John surgery when she was younger due to a ligament tear she sustained in gymnastics

do the Rockies finally get a 100 loss season or does the Monfort delusional circus roll on
Steve Adams
12:52
The Rockies' pitching staff is just so painful. I love German Marquez and think he can rebound, but their third starter is... Jose Urena? Austin Gomber?

The Rockies have one of the worst on-paper rotations in recent history. 100 losses feels very possible

With all of the HoF talk of late… why do people think Todd Helton is a Hall of Famer? 2500 hits, five time all star and three gold gloves is a tremendous prime… but every year after 2005 was just ok to good. .345/.441/.607 career at home and .287/.386/.469 career on the road says he was helped substantially by Coors Field. What am I missing?
Steve Adams
12:55
There are 28 players in MLB history who have gotten on base at a higher rate than Todd Helton
12:57
The whole "he was only good at Coors" thing is silly to me, when we have park- and league-adjusted numbers that suggest he was something like 33% better than a league-average hitter over a span of 17 big league seasons. He's an easy hall of famer to me. Todd Helton was awesome, and few hitters have been as good as he has for as long as he has.

People love to focus on the "benefit" of hitting at altitude without taking into consideration the difficulty of recovering from injuries, training, etc. at altitude. And of constantly going from altitude  to sea level over the course of a season.

Michael McKenry was chatting here last week and talked about how he could rarely even sleep the first night or two back from a long road trip

Alrighty, I'm going to clear out and D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed is going to host a new chat momentarily! That link will hit the site in the next minute or so.
Alright I've got to wrap up for the week. Thanks, as always, for chatting -- and sorry for all the questions I can't get to in these. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve if you're so inclined and always happy to take more questions there.
