What do you make of the Thornburg/Shaw swap going into 2018? Any chance of a good outcome for Boston? Last year obviously looked bad, but Thornburg wasn't hurt when he was acquired, and I think Shaw only hurt because he was exactly what the Sox needed.

I didn't like the deal at the time, and it obviously looks worse now. A healthy season from Thornburg obviously lessens the sting, but the pain of that trade goes beyond Shaw simply playing third base. He provided far more value than Thornburg possibly could in a single season and is controllable longer for a longer period of time. It looks like an absolute coup for the Brewers right now, even if 2017 proves to be Shaw's peak season.

Can't count on him to get the necessary innings in 2018, but he's a Cy caliber talent obviously

Cobb ain't getting $20MM AAV, is he?
Steve Adams

I would give Cobb $20MM on a one-year deal. Maybe for two. Beyond that... nopenopenopenopenopenope

Should the question be : Would you trade a sup. pick for 7 years of Hosmer?
Steve Adams

You're completely neglecting the $20MMish they'd need to commit to Hosmer annually over that time. If it were just a pick vs. Hosmer at league minimum, sure give me Hosmer. But you're looking at a mid-sized payroll at best committing upwards of 15% of its capacity to one player that has yet to string together consecutive seasons justifying that level of pay.

You're also losing the draft money that comes along with it and potentially costing yourself further draft value down the line because extra wins aided by Hosmer only further push down your draft value.

I'm just of the mind that if they're going to tear down the rest of the roster, there's little sense hanging onto Hoz.
