Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/5/18
powered byJotCast
Padres 98

Does Preller think Hosmer can change his launch angles, or is he really comfortable giving a 7 year deal to such a grounder-happy hitter?
Steve Adams
3:01
If you're a new organization offering him seven years, you have to believe he can make some legitimate adjustments in his approach. Buster Olney said on his podcast today that there's a "tremendous split" in the SD front office on whether to invest in Hosmer, so it's probably true that there's not even a unanimous consensus among Padres decision-makers.

Any news on the Mariners signing a starter? Lynn, Cobb, Darvish?
Steve Adams
3:02
That type of free agent signing hasn't really been Dipoto's MO since going to the Mariners. I think a trade or a lower-profile signing is much likelier.
Brewers Fan
3:02
Will the brewers make a big splash before spring training?
Steve Adams
3:02
I think they'll at least add another second base option and possibly another arm for the rotation.
Kershaw
3:02
Do you think he opts out after 2018?  If so, do you see him re-signing with the Dodgers or going elsewhere?
Steve Adams
3:03
If he's healthy, absolutely he'll opt out. Dodgers will probably make a big run at keeping him, but the Friedman-led Dodgers have never really beat the field for a free agent in that financial stratosphere. They didn't even bid the most for Kenley, and signing him for $80MM will be viewed a lot differently in the Dodgers org than signing Kershaw for $200MM+
Moose
3:04
Could you see me going to the Yankees?
Steve Adams
3:05
I know Olney has suggested that fit a few times; I don't really see it. I think he'd need a huge salary on a one-year deal or a pretty sizable one in the $17-20MM range on a Kazmir/Cespedes style pillow deal (three years with an opt out after year one), and that'd put the Yanks right back up against the tax line.

3:06
Any chance Lance Lynn ends up in Cincinnati if his price drops a bit?
Steve Adams
3:07
I don't think they'd punt a draft pick when they're still rebuilding, and I don't think his price will drop anywhere near the level where the Reds would be comfortable signing him. Plus, you have to look at it from Lynn's vantage point. If you're already taking a disappointing deal financially, are you taking one with a team that looks like the clear bottomfeeder in its division at present?
Matt E
3:07
Could you see the Reds getting in on Oh? Would be a solid addition to Peralta, Hughes, and Iglesias.
Steve Adams
3:07
Sure -- should be a reasonably priced asset and they could definitely use some one-year upside plays that could emerge as trade options.

How about Addison Reed to the Angels? So Cal native. They don’t have a clear cut closer. It was a closer by committee for most of the year.
Magic 8 Ball
3:08
Addison Reed to LA would seem to be the cherry on top of a rebuilt Dodger bullpen. Seems they could fit him under the luxury tax limit. What say you? Not necessary?
Steve Adams
3:10
Reed makes sense for both of those teams and probably another dozen. He's the best reliever left on the market in my eyes and probably still will cost less than Holland. If the Dodgers can stay under the CBT and get him, by all means, but they might need to make another deal to make that feasible.
3:11
They'll want to leave some degree of wiggle room for in-season additions, and Reed would probably push their CBT line up north of $190MM.
Bravo
3:11
Do you realistically see the Braves acquiring Yelich?
Steve Adams
3:11
I do not.
Mike
3:11
What are the chances that the Cards actually re-sign Lance Lynn?
Steve Adams
3:12
If they hadn't already signed Mikolas, I'd say maybe they fit him in. But they already have a ton of rotation options, and i think if they add another it'll be of a higher caliber. I'd assume he's gone.

Is this a trend with the slow free agent market? Seems like less and less has been happening at winter meetings every year. What can we expect next offseason?
Steve Adams
3:14
Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, Tyler Thornburg, Travis Shaw were all traded at last year's meetings. The Rockies signed Ian Desmond there. McCutchen almost went to the Nats. Wade Davis was traded to the Cubs. The Yankees signed Aroldis Chapman. Mitch Moreland, Wilson Ramos, Carlos Gomez, RIch Hill and Mark Melancon all signed.
3:15
If this is a trend, it's the first year of it.
3:16
And it might be a trend. But the characterization of the 2016 Winter Meetings as slow is not accurate; I was there covering MLBTR during the day and doing the whole schmoozing thing at night, and it was exhausting. This year's Meetings felt like a lot of people standing around with nothing to do, ha.
Ace
3:16
Which ace is most likely to get dealt between now and July 31st, 2018?
Steve Adams
3:17
Do you consider Gerrit Cole an ace? He's a potential ace and has ace stuff and ace seasons in his past, so I will dub him the likeliest ace to be traded as I fill this sentence with the word "ace."
Ace.
Eric
3:17
do you see Duda or Morrison joining the Rockies
Steve Adams
3:18
Both seem plausible to me, sure. LoMo with the new fly-ball or bust approach would be fun at Coors.
Aaron
3:18
Think Mets could splurge for Todd Frazier on 2 year deal?
Steve Adams
3:18
Kind of doubt they even spend that much at this point.
Yankees
3:19
If Yankees eat $13million of ellsbury $23 million each year, is that enough to find a trade partner? Diamondbacks,Giants? Get 1 low level prospect back?
Steve Adams
3:19
I'm going to start kicking off every chat by saying, "Hello. I am Steve Adams and I do not think Jacoby Ellsbury will be traded."

Doesn't mean he won't, but if you ask for my opinion on a potential trade scenario, I'm probably going to respond in the negative.
Leftovers for Supper Again!?

you owe homage to super troopers 'meow bit' for that Ace bit you just threw out there, btw...
Steve Adams
3:20
Meow.
Jimmy
3:20
Where do you think Hellickson ends up?
Steve Adams
3:20
Marlins on a crappy one-year deal or even a minor league contract? They need boring innings, he provides them, and they tried to trade for him in 2016.
JBurnz
3:21
What's Dealin' Dave's backup plan if he loses out on JDM? Or do you think the Red Sox have the muscle to get it done no matter what?
