Archer is anything but horrible -- he has electric stuff, and I think he'd do well with a change of scenery. The Pirates have spent years forcing everyone to throw a two-seamer because of some dated organizational philosophy rather than letting individual pitchers tailor their repertoires to their strengths. It didn't work for Gerrit Cole and it isn't working for Chris Archer.

Archer scrapped the two-seamer in June and struck out more than a third of the hitters he faced from then through season's end, primarily getting burned by home runs. If the ball is dejuiced in '20 and he's back to a four-seam-heavy approach, I think he'll be quite good.

Maybin for Mazara’s platoon complement?  Also a great clubhouse guy which isn’t nothing to a team like CHW trying to make leap forward
Steve Adams
3:09
Maybin has been worse against lefties than righties in his career, including each of the past couple seasons.

Any market out there for Jhoulys Chacin? Seems like he could be a bounce back candidate.
Steve Adams
3:11
I'm sure someone will give him a look on a minor league contract, but his control worsened in '19, his velocity as a starter was down and he just turned 32. Not saying he can't bounce back, but I don't think teams are viewing him the same as a younger, more intriguing arm like Taijuan Walker, Alex Wood, etc.

Is BOS listening on Betts a sign big market spenders are going to be more conservative and not hope they can re-sign guys, ala WAS with Harper, Strasburg, and Rendon?
Steve Adams
3:14
It's a sign that their owners want to cut back on spending, and nothing more really. Betts has been very public about his desire to test free agency. I don't think you can list Harper/Stras/Rendon as proof that top guys aren't signable; they're all Boras clients who were Top 10 picks and multi-time All-Stars -- and Strasburg DID forgo his first chance at free agency in lieu of an extension.
The Sox signed Bogaerts and Sale just last spring, and several other would-be top free agents inked deals as well.

3B Michael Chavis for 1B Trey Mancini. Who hangs up?
Steve Adams
3:15
No way the Orioles take that.

3:15
Big Sexy wants to come back. Who will take Big Sexy back?
Steve Adams
3:15
He wanted to come back in 2019, too, and didn't find a deal :(
Someone should sign him. We need more Bartolo in all our lives

Wil Myers and 2 prospects in the 3-10 range plus 1 or 2 lower ranged prospects for Marte ? Too much or not enough?
Steve Adams
3:16
Putting Myers in any trade absolutely tanks its value. No way the Pirates are moving Marte in that instance.
Rangers fan
3:16
What moves do the rangers still need to make to win the west?  Also, my wife wants a hunter pence reunion, any chance that happens?
Steve Adams
3:17
There's just no realistic way to forecast Texas as AL West champs. They finished 29 games behind the Astros and 19 behind the A's
Pence back to Arlington, sure, I don't think it's out of the question. Who wouldn't want Hunter Pence on their team? Hunter Pence is boatloads of fun

Why are people so hard on Josh Donald being older? Chipper Jones played til he was older and did just fine even with his share of injuries.
Steve Adams
3:20
People are pretty quick to discount him because 2018 was wrecked by injuries and because teams/owners have succeeded in pushing the "he's too old to pay" narrative. I think three years for Donaldson is rational and pushing to a fourth year to get the deal done is defensible. If he's healthy in years one and two that'll largely justify the signing, since a healthy Donaldson will bring surplus value even at $23-25MM annually.

Do you see the Jimmy Nelson signing as the kind depth pickup that would help make a trade with May or Gonsolin in it more palatable? It is this just a reclamation project?
Steve Adams
3:21
I think the Dodgers simply considered Nelson at a $1.25MM guarantee and buckets of incentives a unique value -- and I agree. Nice deal for them, but I wouldn't read into it to the extent that they're now suddenly more comfortable trading May/Gonsoli

What’s Frenchie up to these days? He was a very underrated player. And such a nice guy too
Steve Adams
3:22
Jeff Francoeur? He's calling games for the Braves and was on TBS' postseason analysis crew
Answermyquestion
3:23
Josh stays in Atlanta or goes elsewhere?
Steve Adams
3:24
I said before ... at this point I'd go 30/30/30 percent on Braves/Twins/Nats and 10% on some mystery team(or a rekindled interest from LAD/TEX). I kind of feel like if he was going to sign in Atlanta, it'd have happened by now, but maybe if the Twins and Nats refuse to approach/exceed $100MM, he'll just take Atlanta's best four-year offer (which I don't believe is all that close to 100 at this point)

Toronto seems to really need some left handed bats now and down the line, and they cant really believe in this Teosar Hernandez CF experiment any more can they? Does Grichuk not make more sense in CF?
Steve Adams
3:28
Toronto's outfield scene, broadly speaking, is a pretty big mess. They for some reason continue acquiring players who are either in this same OBP-challenged mold or who were top prospects elsewhere but have seen their shine wear off (Teoscar, Fisher, McKinney -- even Grichuk himself, to a lesser extent).

I don't really know what the vision in the OF is there, but it's not a great mix at present, and I wouldn't be surprised if by the time they're good again, the starting OF is comprised largely (or entirely) of players who aren't currently on the roster.
Also, that Grichuk extension was just beyond puzzling.
3:30
Brb -- need to get a headline up on D-backs signing Hector Rondon
Nationals
3:35
Could the Nats sign Castellanos and move him back to third?
Steve Adams
3:35
I don't think anyone views Castellanos as a viable option at third base at this point.
Twins Fan
3:35
Twins rotation depth enough to win the division?
Steve Adams
3:36
Sure it's enough to win the division but it's hard to say they're concretely better than they were in 2019. And clearly the White Sox have improved, so the path to winning is a bit rockier.

Thoughts on Steve Chisek signing with the “other Chicago team” and “other Sox team”?
Steve Adams
3:39
White Sox got themselves a nice deal -- Cubs and Red Sox were never that realistic given both ownership groups' relutance to sped.

Why is Andrew Friedman still the Dodgers GM?
