Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams 10/19/21

It's props to the whole scouting and player development department, but yes, great pick in the Rule 5. Whitlock and Baddoo are two of the best Rule 5 picks in recent memory.

do you think it actually is robbie ray when that is the persons username
Steve Adams
3:09
Ha, I do not, although I've wondered if at some point in the 8+ years I've been doing these mostly weekly chats, some player has come in and just asked questions about himself or teammates. Lot of players certainly read MLBTR ... less certain anyone's waded into one of these chats before, haha.

What does my market look like? Will someone give me a multi year deal?
Steve Adams
3:10
Sure I think based on the track record, age and batted-ball profile alone he'd have interest on some shorter multi-year deals. Question, though, is whether he'd be better off taking a one-year deal and heading back out next winter. If he wants four, five or six years -- which he looked like a candidate for heading into 2021 -- that's got to be the route he goes.

3:11
If Avisail Garcia opts out, do the Brewers drop a qualifying offer on him?
Steve Adams
3:11
I lean no, but I can see the argument for it. If it were a larger-payroll club, I think it'd be likelier.

Who would you pick first in next season fantasy draft?

Does Trevor Story get a huge deal? Or does he go for one 1 year contract to rebuild value?
Steve Adams
3:14
I don't think he needs to rebuild his value. He's a premium defensive shortstop who had a bad few months to start the season before going on the IL for an elbow injury, coming back, and hitting pretty well. The broader track record is impressive, and was 2021 really that bad in the end? He was worth 3.5 fWAR and 4.2 bWAR. I'm sure he cost himself SOME money with a "down" year by his standards -- he'd be a $200MM guy if he'd posted his 2018-19 numbers -- but 2021 was hardly awful for him.

Grave man to Guardians? They can afford him and need a veteran piece to go with clase
Steve Adams
3:15
Graveman is one of the few relievers I can see garnering three-year interest, and I doubt Cleveland goes that route.
3:17
Trying to remember them signing any free-agent reliever for three years and coming up empty. Might have happened on a smaller scale but Graveman will be in position for a pretty prominent AAV as well ($8-10MM)

Four years or more for E-Rod?
Steve Adams
3:19
I'm at four on him. ERA is pedestrian, but the K-BB%, contact profile, swinging-strike rates, velocity, etc. are all strong and he's 29 next season. Anthony Franco is at five years on him. After years of always being more aggressive with contract picks than the rest of the team here, it's an odd feeling to have Anthony extending beyond my comfort level on multiple players, ha.

Steve Reds fan here.......Moose back to K.C. add one of our top arms Ashcraft maybe another toolsy prospect could we get Merrifield....
Steve Adams
3:21
No chance the Royals are giving up Merrifield in a scenario like that. They love Whit, and they've said multiple times they want to win now and win with him. I don't see them as a good fit to pick up the remainder of the Moose deal, even if the Reds were to take back Hunter Dozier or something.

Barria and Ward to KC for Mondesi? Who says no?

Does Adam Duvall decline his side of the $7M mutual option? If not, do the Braves?
Steve Adams
3:24
We have him projected to get more in arbitration. If his agents agree, they'll decline and go into arbitration. With the counting stats he had this year, I don't know why he wouldn't seek the bigger payday in arb.

Is Eddie Rosario signed for next season?

Farhan recently intimated that he'll pick up Posey's option and QO Belt. Wood is a stretch but should he QO DeSclafani?
Steve Adams
3:26
We've debated this a fair bit among the MLBTR staff. It's tricky, because I prefer Wood to DeSclafani in a vacuum, but Wood's injury history is more worrisome. I feel DeSclafani, despite being older, can earn more in free agency this winter.

I honestly wouldn't mind the Giants QO'ing all of them, but I agree that Wood won't get one. I lean yes on Disco.

3:27
Do you feel the Cubs see "building up the farm" and "financing a competitive team" as mutually exclusive?
Steve Adams
3:29
They shouldn't be, although MLB's insistence on tying talent acquisition to wins and losses encourages it. The primary (and nearly only) way to maximize your young talent is to lose games. It's a terrible system that encourages tanking.

The Cubs have the financial wherewithal to be doing things like we saw the Giants do when they took the rest of the Zack Cozart deal to acquire Will Wilson from the Angels. They COULD do things like that while also signing some mid-range free agents and such, but I don't expect them to.

I think they'll sign some middle-tier starters -- from the DeSclafani, Matz, Wood, Gray, etc. bracket -- but not go crazy and sign Correa for $300MM+ or anything.

Does Steve Matz get a QO, and would he accept it?
Steve Adams
3:30
I think he'd accept it, yeah.

3:31
What does Stroman cost me? 4/90ish? or is it going to take 5 years?
Steve Adams
3:31
I think more in Zack Wheeler territory, yeah
3:32
That'd be 5/118, but anything 5/110 and up feels about right to me.

Do you see the Mariners addressing the catcher position this offseason (particularly via trade), or do they seem likely to role with Murphy and Raleigh — and Torrens? — to start next season?
Steve Adams
3:35
Nah I think they feel pretty good with Murphy/Torrens/Raleigh in house. Starting pitching is a much bigger priority, and I can see them getting into the mix for some infielders, too. Probably not Correa/Corey Seager, but beyond that, most seem plausible.

3:35
Who commands more AAV (not years): Correa or Scherzer?
Steve Adams
3:35
Scherzer
Josh
3:36
Was the Reds moving R. Iglesias for basically nothing one of the worst moves last winter? And will they do anything to address their woeful bullpen?
Steve Adams
3:36
It was. I don't know what to make of the Reds this winter because it's hard to get a sense whether last year's payroll cutting was just a one-year thing due to Covid revenue losses or whether they're stepping back a bit after spending to new levels a couple years ago without getting the intended result.

What should be at the top of the Twins priority list this offseason - (1) sign Buxton to an extension. (2) sign a fancy free agent shortstop or (3) sign a few decent starting pitchers?
