Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/2/18

The Royals won a World Series in a season where Edinson Volquez was their best starter. Teams have been decreasing SP workloads, increasing bullpen usage and, more and more, moving away from traditional pitching roles entirely. Liam Hendriks is playing "opener" in a playoff game tonight. I think clubs have been generally on board with the idea that starting pitching, in the traditional sense, has become an overvalued asset on the market

Could Alex Meyer be some dark horse starter for Angels next year?
Steve Adams
4:05
He's had shoulder injuries for something like six years running now -- I don't think they can count on him. Whatever you get is just a bonus.

Does Rosenthal get major league contract?
Steve Adams
4:07
Yeah. Greg Holland and Scott Boras went this route a couple years ago and got a solid MLB deal with a vesting player option/tons of incentives. I bet Trevor Rosenthal and Boras are hoping for the same

some cardinals fans are having buyers remorse on Mike Shildt, is it justifed?
Steve Adams

I didn't think it was justified to put all the praise on him when they started winning, nor is it fair to pin the collapse on him either. A lot of are too invested in the idea that a manager can alter the course of a season by 10-20 games -- that's just not that realistic to me. Shildt is probably a better manager than Matheny, but that's because Mike Matheny managed relievers poorly, habitually rode the "hot hand" in the lineup to the detriment of player development of younger guys and was generally OK with guys like Bud Norris taking on meathead "leadership" roles. He'll probably be fine, but I did think it was weird that they just jumped to hire him full-time midseason.
The Cardinals, in general, have felt very reactionary to me in the past couple of seasons.
Alt Bum POV

Looking at Bumgarner from a different POV.  1 year $12M, pitching his age 29 season where the FA market for starting pitchers is abysmal....  Just too many teams who might have interest that if the Giants wish to deal him they don't get an overpay which is what it will take.  Basically if Harper says SFG are out, I think they go this route.
Steve Adams
4:11
Oh I think the interest would be plenty robust. But you're coming at it from a very rational point of view, and I don't know if Larry Baer and the rest of Giants ownership would do the same.

Where does Adam Wainwright resign or does he retire? Another 4 second off top of head answer works for me.
Steve Adams
4:12
Back to STL for something like $5-6MM with plenty of incentives -- both based on starts/innings pitched and relief appearances.

How close are the mesa bros to signing
Steve Adams
4:12
They haven't even had their showcase for MLB teams yet. That'll be this Friday. After that, there will probably be some rounds of private workouts before any decisions are made.

Giants brass not rational?  Oh, yeah, those 3 recent WS championships are pretty irrational, eh?
Steve Adams
4:15
Almost no owners act rationally. That's how you get things like Albert Pujols at 10/240 and Chris Davis at 7/161.

Besides, I wouldn't be spouting praise for Giants' decision-making right after they fired their GM, put Sabean back into an advisor role and are cleaning house because the organization is on the wrong track. Can't take away three rings, but that doesn't mean all their decisions are foolproof. Mark Melancon, Jeff Samardzija, Johnny Cueto, trading for Longo, trading for Cutch, signing Jackson, etc. -- the moves lately have not been good.

Alright -- I've got to call it for the week. I'm on Twitter for more questions or vitriol -- whichever you prefer -- @Adams_Steve. Jason's chatting tomorrow at 6:30 CT. Jeff is out of town this week, so you may all be subjected to me again on Thursday. Brace yourselves!

Enjoy the postseason!
