If they're resetting for a year or two, it doesn't make much sense to hang onto anyone nearing free agency or getting away from their prime years.

I don't know. The starting pitching depth is pretty great right now. I think it's possible that they are next year's Royals, a team that comes out of nowhere and surprises everyone.
It obviously depends what they do in the next few months, but there's some encouraging stuff under the hood.

I think every team could do these blockbuster deals if they wanted to. But the Mets have put a real focus on building their farm up recently and have almost unlimited funds, so why not just spend those?

They don't need to trade anyone to get under the threshold. They're already set to be under it. It just means they won't spend as much this winter.

Adell has almost no appeal at this point. Over a thousand plate appearances of subpar offense.

This is actually a tough one. I could see it going either way.

Cole has 144MM over four years left on his deal. The Yanks could stop him from opting out by adding a fifth year and essentially making it 5/180.
If he hits the opt-out button, the Yanks might be happy to free up 36MM as they try to re-sign Soto.

I think Martinez would accept a QO, yeah, but I doubt the Reds give him one. He's pretty good but 21 million would be a lot for them.

I doubt he gets it but I think he would take it if he received it, yeah.

His last two trips to free agency were rough. He settled for 7.75 from the Rockies two years ago and clearly didn't want to go there. A year ago, he took just 1 mil to come back to the Padres. If there's 21 mil sitting there, grab it.
