Where am I playing next season?
Steve Adams
2:32
I lean toward the Brewers trading him. I think at 1/10, there's some value, but not a lot. White Sox make some sense. Mariners make some sense.

2:33
Who says no ... Tigers trade Gregory Soto to the Rangers for prospect Justin Foscue
Steve Adams
2:33
Foscue alone isn't getting Soto
2:34
Foscue as one of several prospects? Sure -- though probably not with him as the headliner.
Joe
2:35
Harris or Strider???????
Steve Adams
2:35
I've said in the past I'd go Strider, but it's close and another of those "I don't think there's really a wrong answer" scenarios.
Guardians don’t fail me now
2:36
Will Valera be ready by opening day?  If so, does Kwan shift to center?  Straw is so good defensively, but brings so little offense to the plate.
Steve Adams
2:36
Valera has under 200 PAs in Triple-A and didn't hit particularly well there. I don't think he's going to be on the Opening Day roster.

Also, an aside: it is insane that Steven Kwan just had this season and is basically a lock to finish no better than third in ROY voting.
2:37
Kwan rules.

If Correra signs a long term deal with the Twins, what do they do with Royce Lewis?
Steve Adams
2:37
They'd just play him at another position, but I think it's likelier that Correa goes elsewhere. Might still see Lewis at another position after two tears of the same ACL though. Oof.

2:38
So Ohtani could be a top 3 in Cy Young voting and over 30 homers.  And not the MVP?
Steve Adams
2:38
Sure. Judge just had the best  offensive season in the past two decades. Ohtani's amazing, but I'd still vote for Judge.
Aaron Judge
2:39
Blank Check in front of me, who will get me!! I think I'm going to be a Padre.
Steve Adams
2:42
I think is probably more plausible than a lot of people would expect. The Padres would need to be willing to pay the luxury tax again for multiple consecutive seasons, which stings, but if they basically decide they can't extend Soto, they could sign Judge, have them at the corners for two years and then collect the pick when Soto leaves.

I have the Padres projected somewhere in the $184MM range for 2023 payroll right now. The luxury ledger is higher, of course. But still, they spent $214MM this season, will have at least some playoff revenue, and will only be more motivated to spend/win if they get bounced this year.

I'm not saying it's *likely*, to be clear. But I imagine there are plenty of people who'd say "Oh they can't possibly afford that after all they've spent," and I don't agree.
Also, they gutted the top of their farm this summer, so signing a free agent is their best path to making an impact add.

Brendon Donovan rated 10th in MLB rookie power rankings.  Sure hes not flash (and hes a tier below the braves pair) butbare there really 9 better than him?  Cardinals Devil Magic in full working order it seems
Steve Adams
2:45
It's just a really, really good year for rookie. Donovan had a really nice season, but yeah there are nine guys who were better. Maybe more. Rodriguez, Adley, Kwan, Strider, Harris, Kirby... that's just off the top  of my head. You could probably argue that his own teammate (Nootbaar) was better.
Groucho, Chico, Nimmo...
2:46
Who signs Nimmo for CF after this year? Mets, Guardians, Rays...who?
Steve Adams
2:48
Definitely not the Guards or Rays; I expect he'll be well beyond their price range. Mets will be in there, yes. Astros, Cubs, Rangers, too. Maybe Padres if they move Grisham.
AA
2:49
Replacements you could see the Braves going after if Dansby leaves in FA?
Steve Adams
2:50
Think they'd probably just go with Grissom and a stopgap option.. Jose Iglesias or someone. Or maybe just Grissom/Arcia. The Braves' 2023 payroll is basically already at 2022 levels (including arbitration estimates) before they even make a single move. Yeah it'll probably go up, but if Swanson walks, I don't expect them to replace him with another high-priced SS.

Let the house cleaning begin in Detroit, Who do you think will be gone first ?
Steve Adams
2:52
Possible NT candidates in Detroit that I have on one of my sheets here:

Candelario, Cisnero, Hutchison, Reyes, W. Castro, H. Castro (could be more)

Or did you mean in the front office or dugout? That I've not really thought about and don't care to speculate on off the cuff.
Adam Steves
2:53
which of the Big 4 shoetatops would you want and why?
Steve Adams
2:53
In a vacuum for one year, probably Turner. Taken in context of their age, asking price, long-term outlook/projections, possible qualifying offers, etc: Correa.
Eddie
2:55
How much of a market will there be for Chapman and Kimbrel, who gets a better deal this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:55
Kimbrel has pitched considerably better and will get a better deal. Chapman's walked 17% of his opponents
Amazins
2:56
Any chance BoSox trade Verdugo? Could go to Mets as Nimmo replacement
Steve Adams
2:57
Yeah I can see Verdugo being available, sure.

Are people missing the whole point of the MVP? People have continuously said that Ohtani is so valuable because he can both pitch and hit, but shouldn't that mean he has more of an impact on his team's record? Without Judge the Yankees may not even be a postseason team.
Steve Adams
3:00
I've always found that argument silly. It's an individual award. Ohtani has no control of the team around him. By that logic, he wouldn't even be in the top 10.

If I were to "draft" a team of players, with full benefit of hindsight, to put together the best 2023 roster possible, I'd start with Judge and then go to Ohtani. They're my 1-2.

In 2021, I'd have taken Ohtani's season over Vlad, Semien, Correa, etc.
3:01
I know people get bent out of shape over "how do you define 'value'"? I define it as the best. That thing is the most valuable. It is the best. I don't think there's a distinction between them. "Best player from a playoff team" isn't something that's worth voting on, to me.

3:02
Interesting response to my question about which shortstop you would want. Extrapolating further, are you thinking that Turner may not age well due to speed being his greatest asset?
Steve Adams
3:03
Wasn't saying that. He'll turn 30 next June and Correa turned 28 this week. If I'm committing to both over a period of eight-plus years, give me the guy who'll turn 30 two years from now, not eight months from now.

3:03
Which is sadder: the day after the All Star Game when there's no major league baseball, or the day after the season ends when there's no major league baseball?
Steve Adams
3:04
The day after the ASB means there's like 2-3 weeks until the trade deadline, which is super fun. The day after the regular season means that most of the league starts shifting to thinking about free agency and trades. Both of those are extremely fun.
3:05
There's really no bad time of year to be a baseball fan, ha.
Monsieur Hello

Were you disappointed that Boone prevented Judge from attempting to win the Triple Crown batting champion in the Yankees' last game of the season yesterday?
