Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/20/24

Thomas seems likelier than McCarthy. He's had multiple shots and it hasn't worked out. He's a change-of-scenery candidate for me in a way Jake McCarthy just isn't. Mike Hazen even name-checked McCarthy alongside some obviously-not-being-traded guys (Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno) when talking about positives from the 2024 season recently.

Can someone that was left unprotected yesterday be traded before the rule five draft
Steve Adams
1:49
Sure but they're still eligible to be selected then.

Wisdom claimed by Milwaukee? Thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:49
They should be aiming higher than a 37% strikeout rate, glaring platoon splits and a sub-par glove for third base.

Wisdom's maybe a bench player on a team with a decent payroll

Sounds like Chris Costillo is reporting Kyle Hart wishes to return to the MLB. He led the KBO in strikeouts this year (182 in 157 IPs) and pitched quite well in his first season there. Fedde landed a 2-year/$15m contract last offseason. Seems like Hart could be a solid low-cost option for several clubs, but do you foresee Fedde's performance giving Hart a chance at a better deal?
Steve Adams

Fedde was younger, threw harder, had more pedigree and was better and healthier in his own KBO run. We're aware of Kyle Hart and kicked around putting him on the back end of our Top 50 list. I know Ben Clemens predicted three years and $24MM for him over at FanGraphs. I respect the hell out of their process and their writers, but I also don't agree that he's going to be compensated that well.

I don't think he'll top Fedde's deal. If he does, good on him and his agent. I think it's likelier that he comes back on something more modest than the Fedde contract.

Should the Cardinals trade anyone who has been on the team over 3 years?
Steve Adams
1:53
They should be open to trading anyone with two or fewer years of club control (as well as Arenado). The fact that their beat has repeatedly suggested there's no pressure to trade Fedde, Helsley and others is beyond head-scratching. I don't doubt those are the vibes the Cards are putting out, and maybe they're just indicating as much for leverage reasons in talks, but I would be outwardly shopping Fedde and Helsley at the very least and be very open to most guys who are already into arbitration.

I’m betting that with Suarez the Mariners would have won the west - he’s loved by his teammates. If they’re not willing to trade one of their younger 4 starters, who do you see them targeting to fill 3b void?
Steve Adams
1:55
Suarez was terrible for three months before he turned it around in Arizona and was somehow the best hitter in MLB from July through September. If he'd had that same start to his 2024 season, M's fans would've been calling for his head and clamoring for a DFA. The D-backs were all but benching him for Blaze Alexander before some injuries pushed Suarez back up the depth chart and he caught fire.

Bohm for Devin Willams and a prospect?
Steve Adams
1:57
I think the Phillies would need to be the ones adding the prospect. I'd rather have the one year of Williams

Alek Thomas seems like a good fit for the rebuilding White Sox
Steve Adams
1:58
Totally reasonable target for the White Sox or any team not squarely in win-now mode

When do you think we'll see our first day of a flurry of activity? Winter meetings?
Steve Adams
1:58
Meetings is always the safe call, though a handful of things usually get done right before Thanksgiving, too
QO Recipiant
1:59
When a player like Luis Serevino receives a QO, why would they reject it.  Mid level pitcher now attached to compensation, wouldn’t they be better off accepting the QO and being free of the QO for future years?
Steve Adams
2:01
Because most players prefer long-term security, and Severino has had more than a week to see what's out there and gauge interest. If he'd rather have something like three years and $45MM and feels that's out there, why wouldn't he reject? Especially given his injury history. He's guaranteed nothing beyond 2025 with the QO, and if he gets injured again, he might be looking at under $10MM in earning power for the rest of his career.

Plus, the downside isn't that he signs for league minimum or sits out the season. Even in a disaster scenario where he overplays his hand and signs for, say, a year and $13MM. He's risking $8MM in 2025 earnings for potentially tens of millions in future earnings.
