Do you think the Rangers try to trade Odor?
Steve Adams
3:26
They can try but I don't know who's going to want to take him after last season. A .250 OBP doesn't really cause suitors to line up.
Allen
3:26
You starting to think giants will get Stanton? And now Gordon too?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't. Unless they're just completely throwing up a smokescreen by saying they don't want to exceed the luxury tax. This would be their fourth straight year -- that's a 50 percent taxation on every dollar over $197MM. And they'd still need a center fielder. And a third baseman. And bullpen help.
Braves
3:28
Are we being restricted in the coming years?
Steve Adams
3:28
There's more details on the MLBTR home page, but yeah
Through 2021 it sounds like
Shane
3:29
Archer worth more? That's crazy... Please explain how...
Steve Adams
3:30
Russell and Schwarber are both controlled for the same amount of time as Archer, who is one of the friendliest contracts in all of baseball. Unless you're evaluating Archer only on his ERA, he's worth more than that pair.
Dan
3:30
Hensley Meulens or Aaron Boone next manager of the Yankees?
Steve Adams
3:30
I think it's ludicrous that Boone is even being considered when he has no coaching experience
Ian
3:31
Does Dee Gordon have positive or negative value to Miami?
Steve Adams
3:32
I don't think his contract is stuffed with surplus value, but he's at worst a fairly priced asset and at best has maybe $10MM or so of surplus value (that is an extremely rudimentary and off-the-cuff estimate FWIW)
William
3:33
Does Hanley and Porcello's contracts off the books next year gear the sox direction this offseason as far as spending goes?
Steve Adams
3:34
Dombrowski has already flatly said it doesn't matter if they stay under the luxury tax. How much that is driven by the fact that Hanley's deal is off the books next year, I don't know.
Porcello isn't a free agent next winter. He's signed through 2019
Cubs Fan
3:34
Why do Cubs fans think Kyle Schwarber has trade value?
Steve Adams
3:38
I wouldn't say he doesn't have value, but there does seem to be a section that thinks he's a premium trade chip since the Cubs staunchly refused to part with him for Andrew Miller (oops).

The Cubs have always liked Schwarber more than others -- hence picking him 4th overall -- but he doesn't really have a position right now and didn't hit enough to compensate for that in 2017.

As for Russell, he's a great defender but we're talking a career .312 OBP. There's plenty of upside with him, but that upside is basically him providing as much value as I'd expect Archer to give over the next four years. Again, you can only really dislike Archer if you evaluate him solely on his ERA, which isn't a good way to gauge any pitcher's value.
REDSox GM
3:38
Jose Abreu to the Sox makes a lot of sense to me - how come that rumor hasn't come out?
Steve Adams
3:39
We talked about it in our Red Sox offseason outlook. It does make sense -- it makes sense for virtually any team looking at Stanton and JDM to instead just give up prospects to get Abreu from Chicago.
Ian
3:39
Which pace of play rules will actually get passed for 2018?
Steve Adams
3:39
If I had to guess, I'd assume a pitch clock and limiting the number of catcher/coach visits to the mound
Cory
3:39
Do you think the Twins extend Dozier or they trade him at some point this year?
Steve Adams
3:40
I'd be surprised if they didn't try to work something out. I'd offer him the Justin Turner deal in Spring Training and see if he bites.
Corri
3:40
Does Austin Meadows have a spot on the opening day roster for the pirates?
Steve Adams
3:41
Meadows hit .250/.311/.359 in AAA last season. He'd need a McCutchen trade and a ridiculous spring showing to make that happen. Even then, the Pirates would probably keep him down until June for Super Two purposes.
Rox Guy
3:41
One more Abreu question....Abreau to the Rockies for Rodgers?  Does that get it done on both sides?
Steve Adams
3:41
Don't think the Rox would give Rodgers. But I like the Abreu/COL fit yeah
Acuna
3:41
Will hakuna matata be playing Braves opening day
Steve Adams
3:42
There's no real reason for the Braves to have him break camp when they could leave him in the minors for a month or so and gain another year of club control. Also, of course, it is largely dependent on their ability to dump Kemp and/or Markakis this winter.
Blake Parker
3:42
Am I the Angel's Closer this year??
Steve Adams
3:42
I would assume so, but let's see who they sign in free agency before making a definitive declaration.
Reeses Pieces
3:43
Why DFA Brugman when Mark Canha and Jake Smolinski are on the roster and considerably worse?
Steve Adams
3:43
I was genuinely surprised to see Brugman DFAed. I don't have a good answer for that at all. Maybe they're already discussing a trade involving him? I agree -- either Canha or Smolinski made much more sense, though I suppose the A's are trying to ADD right-handed bats -- not subtract them.
A's fan
3:44
On which top free agent my A's are going to be the "mystery team involved" (like with Double E last year)
Steve Adams
3:45
Feel like that was more of a unique situation with EE's market falling so far south of where most expected. I could see Oakland spending decent coin on a bullpen arm -- Brandon Morrow or Mike Minor perhaps.

3:45
who is hakuna matata>
Steve Adams
3:45
Was referencing Ronald Acuna
Rocky
3:46
Can Ohtani legitimately be a productive SP AND DH for an AL team?  I'll believe it when I see it
Steve Adams
3:46
I don't know that I expect it, but I'm sure whoever signs him will let him try to do both. He wants to have the opportunity to hit, so affording him a chance to work as a two-way star seems like it'll have to be a prerequisite in any deal
