Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/23/21

Graveman started dominating the moment the Mariners put him in the bullpen in Sept. 2020. He has a 2.05 ERA and 3.17 FIP with a 25.5 K%, 8.9 BB% and 55.9 GB% in his past 66 innings. Teams don't really care so much about what you've done anymore -- they care more about whether they're comfortable projecting you to continue at a certain level of performance.
I thought Graveman would get 27-30, so if it's 24-25, I think it's a pretty decent price.

If both Desclafani and Matz get 3/36, who is the better value signing in your opinion?
Steve Adams
2:37
I'd prefer DeSclafani, personally, but I know I'd have dissenting opinions even among the MLBTR team. Anthony Franco is much bigger on Matz than me, for instance.
Same contract terms -- 3 years, 36MM -- who do you prefer?

Anthony DeSclafani (59.1% | 470 votes)

Steven Matz (40.9% | 325 votes)

Scherzer 3-120mil.
Ray 4-100mil. Which is more likely?
Steve Adams
2:38
Ray should be able to top 4/100 easily.
3/120 is the upper level of what I feel is plausible for Scherzer

Would signing Matz lessen the chances of the Tigers signing Correa?
Steve Adams
2:39
Their payroll is wiiiide open. Tacking on something like $10-13MM annually for Matz isn't going to hinder their other efforts.

Do I get another shot at the MLB?
Steve Adams
2:39
Hinch and Cora did. I would think at some point some owner will be open to it.
Graveman is good, but
2:40
it seems like a strange allocation of likely limited funds
Steve Adams
2:40
They'll trade Kimbrel at some point.

Mid level SPs are dropping like flies. Is Michael Pineda realistically our top FA SP acquisition?
Steve Adams
2:41
Even if the Twins don't want to spend heavily on a multi-year deal for a free agent SP, the trade market will offer plenty of names. John Means, Sonny Gray, Sean Manaea, Chris Bassitt, several Marlins options ... lots of ways to fill out a rotation.
2:42
That said, no, I don't think Pineda is the top SP Minnesota will consider.

How serious do you think Kershaw is about a possible return home? If the Rangers sign him, does that help sway other FAs who are reluctant to sign on for a rebuild?
Steve Adams
2:42
Might help a little -- "Hey! Kershaw! These guys mean business!" -- but Texas is still going to have to overpay in terms of years and/or dollars to get the guys they want.

Any chance we get Correa???
Steve Adams
2:43
Sure. Tons of money to spend -- motivated to spend it. Wide-open infield mix.

If there's a lockout, is the rule 5 draft postponrd?
Steve Adams
2:44
My understanding is it'd happen later in the offseason

2:45
do you see Baltimore handing out any major league deals for free agents?  A catcher or SP do bridge the gap?
Steve Adams
2:46
I think they should, but I've thought that regularly throughout the rebuild and they've chosen not to. Catcher seems less likely, but maybe they throw $2-3M at a pitcher late in free agency.
Voit in Limbo
2:46
What is the plan in 2022 for Luke Voit on the Yankees roster, or is there one? Am I the only one thinking that Luke Voit would be a great fit in Colorado? 55+ HRs?
Steve Adams
2:47
I think you're wildly overstating the effect Coors Field would have on his home run totals, but if the NL adds a DH, Voit/Rox makes some sense. It's pretty clear the Yankees are open to/hoping for an upgrade.

Should the phillies be in on Chapman?
Steve Adams
2:49
I'm not sure if this means Matt or Aroldis. I assume the former, and if that's the case, then emphatically, yes. The Phillies should be far less focused on getting a capital-C "Closer" and far more focused on improving the defense, particularly in the infield.
(Subsequently ... improving the glovework would help the bullpen)

Sonny Gray to LA for Gavin Lux?  Would this be the start of a deal?
Steve Adams
2:50
Lux feels like too much for Gray
Ben Cherington
2:51
Could I sign Seiya Suzuki or is someone like Clint Frazier more realistic
Steve Adams
2:52
I don't think the Pirates are going to spend at the Suzuki level, even though the fit is a good one and they payroll could obviously accommodate it. Frazier feels more plausible, but there are obvious unknowns regarding his health, given how his 2021 ended.
Barron Tudor
2:52
How much posting fee do you think is going to be for Seiya Suzuki?
Steve Adams
2:52
It's dependent on the size of the contract. 20% of the first 25MM, plus 17.5% of the next 25 and 15% of anything thereafter.
Guards Fan
2:53
Thoughts on the fangraphs article saying the Guardians still probably will not spend this offseason??
Steve Adams
2:54
I haven't read the piece you're referencing just yet, but I never expected them to go big in terms of spending anyhow. Sign a decent outfielder, maybe, but I've never felt something like 3-4 notable free agents were likely.

Does the Franco deal mean that Taylor Walls is gone?
Steve Adams
2:54
Franco was going to displace Walls with or without the extension. I do think Walls is a great target for any team looking for shortstop help -- but that was true before Franco signed.
