Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/28/17

If you're hoping that MLB Trade Rumors is going to stop tracking the most notable trade scenario in the past half decade or so to appease a vocal minority that just wants him to be traded already, that's not happening. Hopefully your other holiday wishes will come true. In the meantime, feel free to scroll past the Stanton posts -- it's not especially difficult.

Joe Smith on a 2 yr 12M deal? Too much? Too little? Or just right?
Steve Adams
3:28
Seems reasonable to me.

Would the Orioles consider Arrieta?
Steve Adams
3:28
Better question is probably, "Would Arrieta consider the Orioles?" I lean no on that one after his struggles there

Disappointed to see that Park didn’t pan out. Are the twins actually off the hook for that money?
Steve Adams
3:30
They were let off the hook when Tsuyoshi Nishioka flopped in a similar manner. I agree -- when Park was on a good run from mid-April through late May in his first year with the Twins he seemed like he could be a lot of tun. Lots of K's but also some mammoth HRs. Not a lot of folks clear the batter's eye in dead center at Target Field.

Do you see the Tigers making any other moves?
Steve Adams
3:31
They'll sign a fifth starter with some form of upside to both stabilize the rotation and also to hopefully develop into a trade piece come July. I'd wager they do the same in the bullpen.
Kinsler trade is still likely as well. And maybe Alex Wilson/Shane Greene, too.

Traded for Donaldson once, what would it take to pry him away a second time?
Steve Adams
3:32
Ross Atkins has said he'll only trade Donaldson if it makes the '18 Jays better. There's no way the Braves are meeting that type of package for a one-year rental of Donaldson when they're not close to competing with the Nationals.

Think the Rox could be the dark horse for Hosmer?
Steve Adams
3:33
Definitely think they could be in that mix, yeah. First base need is evident, and part of the reason they loved Desmond so much seemed to be the whole strong leader, personality, clubhouse presence, etc. -- he didn't pan out on the field in Year 1 obviously, hence the potential fit for Hosmer, but it does serve as evidence that the Rox are drawn to that type of presence. And maybe a move back to a position where he's had more success (left field) would benefit Desmond in year two. Certainly improved health should.

Can Julio Urias be counted on to help the dodgers rotation?
Steve Adams
3:34
That's a massive shoulder surgery he's coming off of -- one that is accompanied by a recovery time of more than 12 months. I wouldn't bank on getting much from him in 2018.
Henry
3:35
Is there a possibility that Charlie Blackmon gets traded?
Steve Adams
3:35
I'd be shocked if he's moved. I know he's a free agent in a year, but the Rox wouldn't move CarGo when they weren't even in win-now mode. Blackmon is as good or better than CarGo was, and the Rockies are certainly in "win-now" mode at this moment.
Jon Daniels
3:36
Who's the next pitcher I acquire?
Steve Adams
3:37
Probably a reliever while they wait to see the Ohtani saga play out. Which specific one -- I don't think even Jon Daniels knows the answer to that.
Drew Smyly
3:38
You think I sign a 2 year, $7MM contract with the Mariners? If not them, then where and for approx. what terms?
Steve Adams
3:39
I don't think he'll get that guarantee. Eovaldi took something like 1-year, $2MM with an option when he was in a similar position. Mariners make sense, but I could see a team like the Rays, Pirates, Padres, etc. considering him a value play in that regard as well.

Smyly could also just go the Greg Holland route and sit out 2018 entirely, then look to sign for a larger guarantee in the 2018-19 offseason.

Seager/Diaz/Gamel to the Cards for Reyes/Pham. Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:42
I don't see the Cardinals taking on that much money and parting with a guy they seem to really believe can be a front-of-the-rotation arm. Plus Pham was markedly better than Seager last year, and even if you expect positive regression from Seager and negative regression from Pham, there's c ase to be made that Pham is more valuable given the cheap control.

Steamer has Pham at a 112 wRC+ and Seager at 116 -- they're comparably productive players with a pretty significant gap in terms of price tag.

Is this Edgar's year?
Steve Adams
3:43
Should be.
Doesn't mean it will be. But he's a HOFer as far as I'm concerned.

Does the rumor of us offering S. Alcantara for Stanton hold water? Should he be the best prospect offered for an NL MVP?
Steve Adams
3:44
I don't doubt that he was at least discussed as someone that the Cardinals would put in a deal. But I also don't think he's a good enough headliner to meet the Marlins' likes.
or the Marlins' price. Whatever. Typing is hard.
Confused man
3:45
How in the world is Stanton worth prospects AND taking on his whole contract?
Steve Adams
3:45
He's not, which is why teams are trying to get the Marlins to include money in the deal. I'd imagine if they move him, they eat $50MM+.
Padres
3:45
Do they go internal for short stop?
Steve Adams
3:46
I think they'll bring in someone from the outside, even if it's just Alcides on a one-year deal or something.

Is the Beltran meeting a courtesy, or does he have a legit shot at being the Yankees manager.
Steve Adams
3:48
He's only the sixth interview they've conducted, so I'd say it's a legitimate chance. I cannot fathom the Yankees handing that team to someone like Beltran or Aaron Boone -- zero coaching/managing experience -- given the media demands of the position and the sky-high expectations, but it seems they're comfortable entertaining the notion. And it seems downright likely that they'll be hiring a rookie skipper. It's very odd to me.

Buy/sell?   Matt Harvey has a bounce back year - becomes a serviceable mid rotation starter
Steve Adams
3:49
Thoracic outlet surgery is tough to come back from, and not many guys have had that and Tommy John surgery as close together as Harvey did. I'm not a huge buyer, but for around $6MM I think it's worth the Mets paying him to find out.
