Do you think the Jays are really shopping Vlad? Would a package of Whisenhunt, Wade Jr and Matos be enough for the Giants to get him?
Steve Adams
1:26
I don't think they're shopping Vlad, no. If some team made them a crazy offer that netted them considerable MLB talent, I'm sure the Jays would listen on a lot of people, but I don't think Wade Jr. as the primary big leaguer going back to Toronto is enticing enough for the Jays to do that. There's obvious long-term value with Whisenhunt and Matos, but the Jays are a win-now team.
Angels 2024
1:26
Steve, could this be off season Angel's do not spend much at all? Kolarek a sign of this, filling out roster with cheaper players?
Steve Adams
1:27
Perry Minasian has already said they're going to be aggressive. And Arte Moreno has proven in the past that he'll be a reactive owner when things don't break his way (like, say, if Ohtani signs elsewhere) You're reading a lot into them signing one cheap reliever they like early on.

Did AA clear out extra inventory to be a sleeper player for Yamamoto? He seems to fit the normal Atlanta formula of locking in young studs for the rest of the decade and keep the juggernaut rolling.
Steve Adams
1:30
I don't think trading a couple guys he was going to non-tender anyway (Soroka, Lopez) and a couple former prospects/first-rounders whose stock has plummeted (Shuster, Shewmake) has any real bearing on the Braves' plans to pursue Yamamoto or their chances of signing him.

That trade didn't do much to clear up payroll, and they could've opened a 40-man spot just by non-tendering Nicky Lopez or DFA'ing Forrest Wall or something.

If they sign Yamamoto -- which I don't think will happen -- it won't have much of anything to do with the trade for Bummer or the trade of Kyle Wright.
A question
1:30
How many questions usually get submitted on these chats
Steve Adams
1:31
Hundreds to thousands, depending on how many readers we have. We're over 1000 participants right now. Were close to 2000 at the end of last week's. Some in the past have climbed to 3000-4000 people, depending on the time of year (e.g. right before the trade deadline, mid-Winter Meetings).

It's a lot. But I like to take one of these types every now and again to let people know that I don't hate you, your favorite team/player, or your question. There's just, well ... a lot of them!
Mets Go Lets
1:32
Lots of Yamamoto chatter in Mets circles. Not a whole lot connecting them to him elsewhere. Any reason you’d be skeptical of the match? Cohen can’t be beat if he wants a FA, and Yamamoto fits the team’s needs nicely as a young SP who will be good for a while.
Steve Adams
1:33
No reason to think they aren't/won't be major players for him. But I expect the Yankees, Dodgers, Giants and Cubs, at the very least, will all represent competition from major market peers.

Steve, what do you think about the catchers from the Angels? With Stassi coming back do you think they would trade Matt Thaiss?
Steve Adams
1:34
Yeah Thaiss is a definite trade candidate who's flying under the national radar. I don't think he'd necessarily fetch a huge return, but he's out of minor league options, O'Hoppe is clearly the everyday guy, and they're stuck with the Stassi contract for now. Hopefully he has a better '24 season now that the terrifying family issues are behind him.
1:37
Stassi announced after the season that his son had been born three months premature, at just 1.5 pounds, and had spent close to 200 days in the NICU. As someone who just welcomed his second child into the world myself, my heart actually aches for Max and his wife. I cannot fathom trying to play baseball -- or even function at a basic human level -- going through that emotional hell. All the best to him and his family.

To make Winter Meetings funner ESPN live at and MLB Network live all night.
Steve Adams
1:39
Like, broadcast them? I think people have a pretty glamorous idea of what the Winter Meetings are that is not at all reflective of what they actually are, ha. I'm not going this year, but it's basically just a lot of people like me standing around and chatting in a hotel lobby/bar while all of the agents and team people hang out in their hotel suites and try to avoid any areas where lots of people will be around, haha.

Should we assume Phillies are done with the big splashes? Love a good reliever or bench bat but still feel like something is missing
Steve Adams
1:40
I still think they'll add a reliever at least

Cleveland : what are we doing here?  how serious are we really about contending?
Steve Adams
1:41
"What are we doing" as in what? Listening on Bieber? It's the same thing they do every time they have a high-end pitcher get close to free agency.

The Guardians will probably try to acquire a bat and some outfield help (possibly in the same move), but they're going to rely on the young core of Bibee, Williams, Allen, Naylor, a hopeful Gimenez rebound, a hopefully successful debuting Manzardo and the always-awesome Jose Ramirez to do all the heavy lifting.

How do the giants approach their outfield logjam? Who do u see them trading to clear space if they get bellinger
Steve Adams
1:42
I don't think they'd need to clear any logjam if they sign Bellinger
1:43
You'd go Yastrzemski, Bellinger, Conforto in the outfield with plenty of Haniger and Slater mixing in. Anyone from that group could see time at DH as well. But Haniger can't be counted on to stay healthy, Slater primarily hits lefties anyway, etc. It'd just be more mixing and matching.

Probably means Matos, Meckler and Ramos open in AAA, but they all have options remaining and Matos looks like he needs the further development time anyhow

Detroit is improving while Cleveland and Minnesota are getting worse. It's their division to lose now.
Steve Adams
1:45
I do not think Kenta Maeda + Mark Canha makes it Detroit's division to lose. The Tigers also could lose E-Rod, who's better than Maeda.

And the offseason is like 20% over.

I like the Tigers as a team on the rise, but this is an overstatement.

Feels like there will be no good news this offseason for the Brewers, got any upside?
Steve Adams
1:47
I'm not convinced they'll definitely trade Burnes!

But they very well could and I'm also like 75% done writing something looking at the best landing spots for him, sooooo. Um... William Contreras is great and that trade was a home run for the Crew?

Matt Shaw and Christopher Morel to Seattle for Bryce Miller and Justin Tops?
Steve Adams
1:48
I'm not as big on Morel as a lot of Cubs fans. I wouldn't take him as the headliner in a Miller deal, personally

Cease, Bieber, and Glasnow,  who changes teams and who stays where they are?
Steve Adams
1:49
I think all three are traded

1:50
Is Burnes less likely to be traded than the three pitchers mentioned above?
Steve Adams
1:51
I think so. The Rays are trying to clear payroll. The Guards just don't let their top starters reach free agency, preferring trade packages to qualifying offers and draft picks. Cease's value is near its peak, though if the offers this winter are underwhelming they could hold for the deadline.

Burnes fits into the Milwaukee payroll reasonably well, the Brewers still want to contend, etc.

Would Matz and Carlson to TB for Glasnow work?  Or does TB need to reduce salary more than that?
Steve Adams
1:52
Outside of salary, that's just not enough for Glasnow from a talent perspective.
For what it's worth, re: that India poll -- I do think he'll be traded. Forgot to add that, ha.

Now that Oveido is getting TJ surgery, the Pirates have exactly one proven starting pitcher.  Given that they needed at least 2 decent starters, will BC continue to dumpster dive for starters or will they ante up and sign a #3 type?
Steve Adams
1:56
Think this is some misplaced frustration directed at Ben Cherington, the Pirates' GM, when it's more aptly pointed at owner Bob Nutting. Cherington had no issues spending on free agents when he ran baseball operations in Boston. Spending even on a third/fourth starter could require $12-18MM per year on a multi-year deal in this day and age, though. (See: Taijuan Walker, Jameson Taillon) I don't think Nutting has an appetite for that level of risk/payroll, which hamstrings Cherington a bit.

Would like to see the Bucs sign some actual reliable pitching, but that'll probably be too costly. It's feasible enough that they could sign like... one source of boring innings (e.g. Wade Miley), one upside play on a short-term deal (e.g. Frankie Montas) and/or one dice-roll on someone like Erick Fedde (former first-rounder and Nats top prospect who just won KBO MVP honors). But I doubt that three signings of that nature are in the cards. There'll probably have to be something done on the trade market
And they'll need in-house arms like Quinn Priester to step up. And Roansy Contreras to bounce back.
