Will it take a fourth year to land Grandal? Braves have a glaring need offensively at C.
Steve Adams
2:49
We debated this a lot. Grandal made pretty clear last winter that annual value is extremely important to him. I can see him considering, say, 3/60 more appealing than 4/68. Hell, I'd really put him to the test and offer him something like 2/44 if I were a team with a enough short-term payroll space.

Are the Angels considered a "win now" club? *Assumes signing of Cole or Stras, and 1-2 other reasonable SPs*
Steve Adams
2:50
Hamels' comments were clear that he wants to join a team that is trying to win now. The Angels don't have the recent track record, but it's pretty clear they're trying to win, and it'll be more clear if they sign Cole or Strasburg before Hamels.

Although really, I expect Hamels to come off the board before either of those two.
El Pito Abreu
2:52
How much longer before I get signed, for how long, and how much?
Steve Adams
2:52
If I were Abreu, I'd just accept the QO.
Yan Gomes
2:52
How come I'm not even getting 3M on my next contract after a WS ring?
Steve Adams
2:53
The World Series ring isn't going to convince anyone to pay him.

Gomes has had one decent year at the plate in the past five seasons, his framing numbers dipped this season, and he'll turn 33 next summer. Someone might still pay him because they believe the glove bounces back, but he's not great and there are more preferable catchers on the market.

Checking in on Scooter Genneeeeeeeeeeeeeeett.
Steve Adams

Salary dumped to San Francisco. Then released. Then went unsigned. Minor league deal territory.
Also the market -- both FA and trade -- has like 30 viable 2B options available.

Who are some realistic SP that I can sign in the offseason? Straily/Karns worked out horribly last year. Dont want a repeat of that mess.
Steve Adams
2:58
I think it'll be more of the same. We'll see who's left standing late in free agency, but I don't expect anyone particularly exciting, even though I think they should try a bit for that. They need to convince a veteran guy to come to Baltimore as well, which isn't easy after the past two seasons, so it'll need to be someone who'll have a hard time getting a rotation job elsewhere.

Jhoulys Chacin, Martin Perez, Tyson Ross, etc. I'd keep an eye on non-tendered guys and anyone cut loose in Spring Training (like Straily was), as well.

Hindsight is 20/20....looking back on the July trade deadline, how do you evaluate the Giants decision to hang onto Bumgarner.  Would you take the prospects in July or the draft pick attached to a QO?
Steve Adams
2:59
I said at the time I thought they should've traded them and still feel that way, but I understand why the moves weren't made.

If Reds can’t land Grandal who is next to make a big splash at catcher? Wilson Contreras?
Steve Adams
3:02
Grandal is kind of a unicorn, particularly for the Reds. He's the clear best catcher available, and while I don't think it's impossible that the Cubs would trade Willson Contreras, I have a very difficult time seeing them move him within the division.

If they don't get Grandal, they could go for a more complementary piece like d'Arnaud or Jason Castro, or they could just roll with Barnhart/Casali and spend elsewhere.
3:03
I do sort of like d'Arnaud as a potentially undervalued asset coming off that Rays breakout, though the injury risk is pretty palpable with him.

Chances Reds sign Grandal, Didi  Gregarious and Will Smith and Hudson for the pen. Then either Ozuna or Nicholas Castellanos  for LF. Does that spring board the Reds to talk of NL Central Champs and playoff winning chance?
Steve Adams
3:04
The answer to the question: "What are the chances my team signs this exact combination of 4-5 free agents" is pretty much always going to be "nonexistent." Be happy if you get 1-2 of the group, but don't expect it.

So Dozier didn’t make the top 50 free agents?
Steve Adams
3:05
33 early next May, tons of 2Bs available and he basically had his playing time usurped by Asdrubal Cabrera at the end in DC. Our list focuses largely on earning power, and I don't think Dozier's is all that substantial. More upside with him than with a lot of the 2Bs out there, but he's posted two pretty boring seasons in a row

Who would be a possible contract swap for Choo or Odor be.
Steve Adams
3:06
Get Preller on the phone and see what type of money would need to be included to make some kind of Odor/Myers swap work?
SG
3:06
I see that Abreu is projected to make $28 MM / 2 years.
Steve Adams
3:07
We basically just asked ourselves what we think the White Sox will pay him. I find that high, personally, and think it'd be a few million less annually. But I cannot imagine him playing anywhere but the South Side of Chicago
Mr baseball
3:07
Carpenter for reddick
Steve Adams
3:08
Reddick has a year and $13MM left. Carpenter has two and $39MM left. There's no incentive for the Astros to do that.
Derek Falvey
3:08
Do you think I should move Eddie Rosario this offseason? Did last year's down performance tank any trade value he had?
Steve Adams
3:10
(Falvey = Twins chief baseball officer)

I think Rosario's value has always been pretty overstated in Minnesota (I live here). He's an OBP sieve with an awful approach at the plate, and his defensive metrics cratered this year. But arbitration values dingers and RBIs, so he's going to see his salary rise pretty substantially. I've seen people on social media and blogs try to suggest they should use Rosario to get an impact pitcher, and I don't think that's feasible.

Why am I considered to have no trade value? 4 WAR year-long rental for 11million seems like a great deal for teams
Steve Adams

I wrote many more words saying basically the same thing like 5 weeks ago!

Worst contract - Pujols or Miggy?
Steve Adams
3:11
Cabrera is signed for sooo much longer. His is worse right now and was worse when it was signed because it was absolutely unnecessary for the Tigers, They still had him locked up for two more years.
Mike Unterts
3:11
Better bet to re-up with Giants - Madbum or Smith?
Steve Adams
3:12
There's a chance Smith takes the QO, so him. I think Bumgarner is more or less gone.

3:12
You don’t think Odorizzi will accept the QO?  To me, that seems most likely...
Steve Adams
3:13
I don't see any reason for him to. He's young (relative to other FAs), saw a notable uptick in velocity after some mechanical changes, and dramatically improved his K% once he went all-in on spamming his four-seamer at the top of the zone. I think he should get multi-year offers near the same rate as the QO.

Would I be better off signing Cole or two pitchers on the Wheeler/Bumgarner tier?
