What is the likliehood that qualifying offers with draft pick compensation become a thing of the past next cba?
Steve Adams
3:36
The system hasn't worked as intended -- there'll be alterations if not an entirely new system.
Jackson P.
3:36
Mariners! Please...give me hope.
Steve Adams
3:37
The farm is way better than it was a couple years ago. Some of the controllable guys that have been picked up look useful. Marco Gonzales is pretty good. Omar Narvaez can hit. I like Mallex Smith as a rebound candidate. Justus Sheffield, Justin Dunn and several others are ready for looks in 2020.
3:38
People hate on Dipoto as overaggressive and a destroyer of farms, but a lot of his reputation comes from bad moves made by ownership above him (Hamilton, Pujols ... he inherited a miserable farm in Seattle).

As far as rebuilds go, he didn't wait until the bitter end like the Orioles, Tigers and Royals ... and I think the Mariners are looking at a much quicker turnaround than most rebuilds as a result.
Mr baseball

Fowler for reddick
Steve Adams
3:39
I can see that you:

A) Are a Cardinals fan and
B) Really like Josh Reddick?

But there's no good reason for Houston to trade the last $13MM of Reddick's deal for multiple years of a more expensive Cardinals deal
Old Pitchers
3:40
Where do you see pitchers like Hernandez, Hill etc ending up?
Steve Adams
3:42
Rich Hill has strongly suggested it's back to LA or Boston for him.

King Felix ... man, I don't know. Maybe a so-so or even bad team in a big park rolls the dice on him? Giants? Marlins? Royals?

You'd probably sell some jerseys, draw a bit to his first couple starts. If you can fix him it's a nice trade chip ... but he has been terrible for awhile now.
Low and slow
3:43
Is it going to be this slow until winter meetings?  Why doesn’t a low market team strike while the kettle is hot?
Steve Adams
3:44
This is normal. MLB free agency isn't NFL/NBA free agency where everyone signs as soon as the market opens. Even when the relationship between teams and players was healthier, we might see a handful of November signings -- and none this early on.
3:45
Broadly speaking, the early signings favor the players -- you're offering enough to convince them to forgo a longer-term bidding war -- which is why you see even fewer now than you used to.
Bootsie and the Hammer
3:45
Will Smith HAS to take the qualifying offer doesn't he?
Steve Adams
3:45
He's the clear best reliever on the market. I don't think he "has" to at all.
Rays pitching
3:46
They gotta trade some of that surplus pitching talent for a big bat, right? They are absolutely STACKED with quality arms, something you can't say for hardly any other team. Who do they go after? (Rhys?)
Steve Adams
3:46
Just sign Edwin
Tigers Fan...Sadly
3:46
What is the draw for guys like King Felix to keep playing under a Minor League deal?  Dude has made a ton of cash in his career - why be remember for the final couple years trying to fight your way onto a MLB roster?
Steve Adams
3:47
They're uber-competitive athletes who love the game.

In Felix's case, he's never won a World Series and never even pitched in the postseason. Why wouldn't he want that chance. Plus... He isn't even that old. He's 33.
Danielectomy
3:48
How 'bout the Jays for a slightly higher-end pitcher, like say, Odorizzi?
Steve Adams
3:48
We liked them as a fit for Keuchel, although admittedly, that was because we find Keuchel kind of boring but expect him to still have a decent asking price. And the Jays are the type of team that can offer the extra year to get him to sign there (thus getting closer to his expectations while filling out a rotation need)

3:49
White Sox said that Robert and Madrigal will be up next year.  Any chance they break spring training with them?
Steve Adams
3:51
They weren't going to bring Eloy up until he signed the deal, so I expect it's the same with Madrigal and Robert. Plus Madrigal has like 30 games above AA and Robert has 40-50. You can at least argue that they'd be better served with a bit more time there.
Mn Twins Fan
3:51
if the Twins should get Will Smith, how do you see it workout with Taylor Rogers
Steve Adams
3:51
I'd imagine Smith would close and Rogers would set up.
Stranger Danger
3:52
Bullish on Wheeler? He's gotta come in under 5/$100m with the QO
Steve Adams
3:53
I was pushing for him at like 4/90, so I guess I'm just a different type of bullish.

The stuff is elite, and the track record over the past two seasons is great. He's played in front of a laughably bad defense with a poor receiver for some of '19 (Ramos). Velocity, spin, movement are all there ... I think he's going to go to a team with a better data/analytics team and a better defense and become a monster.
Oakland is Really Good
3:53
I, mean, with that young core, right?
Steve Adams
3:54
Yes! They just have the unfortunate distinction of playing in the same division as the Astros.
Gerrit Cole
3:54
Worth more than Harper?
Steve Adams
3:55
We predicted 8 years for Cole, which would be the first 8-year deal for a pitcher in nearly two decades. He's not passing Harper money, and I don't think he's getting to 300 either.
Cap
3:55
Does Jackie Bradley get non-tendered?
Steve Adams
3:55
Nah but I think he'll be traded.
Shoeless Joe Bobby
3:56
Other than Grandal, what other options do you see the Braves looking in to at catcher?
Steve Adams
3:57
Travis d'Arnaud, Jason Castro, Robinson Chirinos ... could trade for a catcher (perhaps one displaced by Grandal if he's not signing in ATL). Russell Martin (sorry -- but Anthopoulos connection galore there)
Dick Williams
3:57
Should I try to sign Didi or try to resign Iglessias?
Steve Adams
3:58
(Reds president of baseball ops = Dick Williams)

Gregorius is a massive upgrade
Kelly Gruber’s wing man
3:59
Does Jose Urena go back to being a starter
Steve Adams
3:59
He pretty much bombed as a reliever at season's end. But the Marlins have tons of younger more exciting arms. I'm not sure he's even tendered; they could trade him, I suppose.
Mark

Cubs drop Russel or trade for a penny.
Steve Adams
4:00
I don't see who's going to give up much of anything for him.
