Trades like that make far more sense in concept than in practice. Most teams aren't all that willing to sell legitimately good prospects to dump the final year or so of a bad contract, and most teams aren't willing to take on 2-3 years of an underwater deal to buy prospects.
Tucker will walk
1:29
He'll have a monster year and walk.  The Cubs are gun shy will spending a big contracts these days.  Long gone are the days of Jason Heyward deals.
Steve Adams
1:30
He might, and that's still OK. The Cubs went out and traded for someone who, in my view, is one of the ... eight? five? ... most talented players in the sport. Good on them. The price was steep, but so be it. The opportunity to acquire someone of Tucker's ability is rare. The NL Central is wide open for the taking. Go for it.

What is Alec Bohm's trade value and are the Phillies overvaluing him?
Steve Adams
1:33
Alec Bohm's trade value is "not much," and yes, the Phillies are asking for far too much. I get coming in higher than you think, but even mentioning names like George Kirby and Mason Miller is just nonsensical.

Talked with a team exec in Dallas who said he's not even sure he'd project Bohm as a 1-WAR player next year. I'm not quite that down on Bohm, but still ... a lot of teams are going to look at him like he's just a guy.

If I were the Phillies, I'd be looking at optionable sixth starter types, but they seem to want an actual mid-rotation arm or better. I would be very surprised if they got anything close to that.

Since the Cubs and Yanks don't seem to see eye to eye on money, any chance the Mets might swoop in? 1B still vacant.
Steve Adams
1:35
Mets will want to keep the door open for Alonso, even if they're wary of going too long-term, and if he goes elsewhere they can see what's left on the market or just move Vientos to first base. I don't think they need to proactively jump for Bellinger.

Where do you expect Hye-Seong Kim to end up? Personally, if I were to bet on it the Mariners make the most sense to me

Are the Mariners waiting to see if they get Hyeseung Kim from Korea before they start making moves?
Steve Adams
1:37
I know Kim was connected to the Mariners earlier in the offseason, but they're just one of several plausible landing spots for him. I wouldn't treat it like it's a foregone conclusion, especially since their priority seems to be 1B, then one of 2B/3B (with a preference for a 3B, all else being equal).

Their lack of activity right now just stems from not having a ton of money to work with and exploring a good number of creative options to fill the infield corners on the cheap.

They could also be waiting to see if they're a genuine possibility for Roki Sasaki, as that might make them more willing to listen on the younger, more appealing starters they have in hous.e

Please tell me the Phillies will not run it back with Marsh in LF and Rojas in CF.  I would rather put Schwarber out in left and trade for Rhys Hoskins.
Steve Adams
1:40
Hey I'm sure the Phillies would giftwrap Hoskins and send him to Philadelphia, ha. They're on a pretty tight budget and Hoskins isn't cheap!

Less sarcastically, I don't think it's realistic that the Phillies just run it back. I get the frustration, but you're realistically looking at them making something like 1-3 moves to address the lineup, and there's 100 days of offseason left. They'll make their move(s) at some point
Santander

Will do better or worse than the 5/100 Castellanos got?

Every time Royce Lewis came off the IL he looked like Roy Hobbs reincarnate but second half of last season he looked mortal.  Any explanation offered up on what may have contributed to this extreme drop off in skills (power) and drive?
Steve Adams
1:42
Injuries and really his first full season with that kind of workload, game-wise. I think Lewis will be fine long-term and am not overly worried about the second   half. If it happens again in 2025-26 and becomes a trend, sure, but right now it seems fair to write it off as an aberration.
1:43
For what it's worth, I'm under 5/100 on Santander
Seems I'm in the minority. I've probably been stuck on 4/80 for him for too long, but that's the general range in which I land.

Are the Cardinals actually going to sit on Helsey or get something for him before he has an injury during the season and walks at the end?
Steve Adams
1:45
I find it insane to think that the Cardinals, in this market for players, would hold Helsley and Fedde, who both had surplus value even before the prices of free agents went bonkers. I also understand that they don't want to advertise "Hey we're moving this guy!!!" so it benefits them to push back on that narrative some. For the sake of Cardinals fans, I hope that's what's happening.

I saw previous comment about player chats. Any possibility of a GM chat? Like to see Krall and Rays GM, ask them questions
Steve Adams
1:47
We've had former GMs host chats with readers. I think it'd be much less likely that an active GM would sit down and do one. They frequently choose not to reply or just go no-comment even when we reach out for off-record things.

I also think if a GM, president of bb ops, assistant GM or whoever actually DID sit down and do a chat with fans, they probably wouldn't say anything that interesting -- at least not about trades, free agency, etc.

Probably would have lots of insight on working in the baseball industry, how they got to their current position, more insight/context on specific roles within an organization, etc.

But insofar as roster- and payroll-related topics... I'd be shocked if they said much.

How does it benefit the Cardinals to not advertise they are moving a guy?  Shouldn't they be solciting offers and seeing what the market will bear, rather than giving teams the impression they are not moving him at all?
Steve Adams
1:49
"We will trade Erick Fedde by Opening Day!"

and

"We don't want to trade Fedde. We need the innings. We'll listen, but we like him a lot and aren't in a hurry to move on."
The latter inherently implies it'll be tougher to get him.

Aaron Judge has taken reps at 1B.  He really should end up there someday, right?
Steve Adams

Maybe in like 2028 or something, but I don't see any reason for a move in the near future.

Are the Cubs desperate enough to give me one of Caissie/Traintos AND Jefferson Rojas for Luzardo or is that a total dream scenario? What's the Cubs desperation for a LH SP on a scale of 1-10
Steve Adams
1:52
I'm surprised Caissie's name has even been floated in Luzardo rumors. I feel like coming off the injury-wrecked season, the ask would have to be lighter than that.

I also don't think the Cubs are desperate for a lefty starter specifically. They already have three of them, after all (four if you count Jordan Wicks)

what's going on with teoscar hernandez ? and r we getting tanner scott ?
Steve Adams
1:55
I've never really bought the Teo/Dodgers reunion as much as a lot of people. He's not the skill set they tend to pursue on multi-year deals, and with Ohtani there long-term, they'd have to commit to Hernandez in the OF for 3+ seasons. Plenty of other fits I like more. Back to the Jays or off to the Red Sox make good sense. If the Reds find $23MM under the couch cushions, then hey, jump into the fray.
Luis Robert
1:55
What team makes sense to trade for me?  Who would it cost?
Steve Adams
1:55
I tend to think Robert isn't getting traded until the season is underway.
The value isn't high right now, but give him a healthy spring and even like one productive month to begin the season, and he can be this year's Luis Arraez (guy traded from a rebuilding team like 5-6 weeks into the season). He's so good when he's healthy.
Anthony Swarzak
1:56
Does a guy like Austin Hedges make a team's pitching staff THAT much better?
Steve Adams
1:56
The Guardians sure think so. They keep paying him several million dollars per season to not hit whatsoever.

On a related note: the Guards' pitching staff is awesome every year.

Did Arenado veto the trade to Houston or something? Haven’t heard anything in days
Steve Adams
1:58
There was no done deal sending him to Houston. The Astros moved Tucker and were reported to have genuine interest in Arenado. That doesn't mean anything is close to happening.

Frankly, it seemed a bit odd to me, given that Tucker was projected to earn like half of what Arenado's going to make in 2025, so the 'Stros would be coming out a good ways north of where they'd been, payroll-wise, when they just had Tucker. And the lineup wouldn't really be demonstrably better.
