Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 12/18/18

They certainly have the talent to get Realmuto from Miami. Francisco Cervelli would be an easy upgrade for them at a more affordable rate (in terms of prospect cost), though he's a one-year option and has had some concussion issues recently.

How serious are the talks between Tulo and the Bucs?
Steve Adams
3:57
He held an open workout for interested teams today. I don't think anything is too serious between him and any team just yet.

Do you see the Rays signing 1 or both of Andrew Miller and Zach Britton?
Steve Adams
3:58
Nah I can't see them spending that highly on a reliever, although I didn't think they'd spend on Morton, either. Great signing for them

Do you see the Twins adding a pure DH or leave the spot open for a rotation?
Steve Adams

They're my pick for Cruz

How long does Al wait to trade Castellanos and what type of return would you expect?
Steve Adams
4:01
He's so bad defensively that I don't think he'd command that much of a return. Deadline seems likelier because there's such a huge supply of available corner OFs this winter. Alternatively, if the Rays want a RH bat to plug in at DH, he could make some offseason sense. But again, I don't think he's bringing back a very good return.

Will Clay Buchholz sign anywhere?
Steve Adams
4:02
Absolutely. Were it not for the forearm injury, I think he could've gotten a multi-year deal. I think he'll get a year and $4-6MM somewhere, plus plenty of incentives.

Is there any chance that Cubs trade Jasón Heyward perhaps to make room for Harper?
Steve Adams
4:04
No one's going to take the Heyward contract without getting tons of cash or without sending a different albatross contract back to Chicago. Then, on top of that, you have Harper looking for a significantly higher AAV and longer-term deal than the Cubs already have in Heyward.

I don't see it working unless talk of the Cubs' financial restrictions are overstated. And that's not the vibe I've gotten this offseason either in reading reports or in talking to people within the game.

Get any sense on what Castellanos yields based on Goldy return..?
Steve Adams
4:07
Goldy is an outstanding defensive 1B, and any of his past five seasons would far and away rank as the best offensive year of Castellanos' career. Castellanos is a lighter bat who has, over the past two seasons, been baseball's worst defensive player. I don't think they're comparable.

You guys have been pretty close on your contract term estimates.  Which one do you think will be furthest from your projections?  Still feel the big guns get that much dough?
Steve Adams
4:09
We'll be way, way off on some, haha, but thanks.
I'm less confident in Machado getting a record-setter than I am in Harper doing so. I feel we might be high on Grandal, too, now that a few more plausible landing spots have gone in other directions. Time will tell.

With Brantley out, are there any short-term deal OFs in free agency the Giants could look at?
Steve Adams
4:12
Adam Jones, CarGo, Jon Jay, Avi Garcia .. doubt any of them gets more than a year. You can filter by position in our free-agent tracker, for future reference:

Whats the word on Daniel Murphy?  He has to be a candidate to hit somewhere
Steve Adams
4:14
I'd imagine he's being pitched as an upper-echelon bat who can handle 2B in an era of shifts, play 1B competently enough and, of course, spend some time at DH. He's probably not Plan A for a lot of teams, but the more names that come off the market, the more he'll start to draw interest.

It sure seems like the White Sox are a great fit for Grandal. Agree?
Steve Adams
4:15
I do think they're a good on-paper fit, but they still have Welington Castillo and gave James McCann a Major League deal to serve as the backup, so it doesn't seem likely that he's a priority for them.

You guys have said several times about the ChiSox 'not having handed out a contract before...'  That's the weakest sauce argument against a Harper/Machado signing.  I mean, heck, if they weren't willing to go big, they wouldn't be talking to both now.  As to the 'they never did before...' logic, well there's a first time for everything.  Seems pretty clear they are willing and able this time... doesn't mean they will get either one's signature on a contract but this notion that they won't go there is just silly at this point.
Steve Adams
4:16
I literally said earlier in this chat, "There's a first time for everything though," with regard to that scenario.

But the fact that Jerry Reinsdorf has just never played at anywhere NEAR this level isn't irrelevant, either.

Does Paul Goldschmidt get an extension or does he reach free agenc?
Steve Adams
4:16
Doubt it, unless the Cards just throw something like Altuve money at him (5/150)
Mike
4:17
Does Michael A Taylor get packaged by Nats for back of rotation depth?
Steve Adams
4:17
I can definitely see that. I thought there might've been a chance he'd be in the Yan Gomes swap. Nats have the outfield depth to make that tradeoff.
4:20
Ok, I have to wrap up for the week. Jason will chat tomorrow night at 6:30pm CT, and Jeff on Thursday at 2pm CT. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve for more questions if you like. We're at the point of the offseason where we have a few thousand people in these things each time we run them, so I obviously can only pick a small fraction to address. Thanks for following along, and enjoy the rest of your week!
