Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 12/19/17

Think Cozart will decline, stay flat or somehow get better?
Steve Adams
3:51
I think 2017 was his peak -- it's not reasonable to expect him to KEEP getting better at 32 -- but his defense will remain excellent. Even if he's more of a 110 wRC+ guy instead of the 130 or whatever he was at this past season, he's going to be a really solid three-win guy (or somewhere in that range). I love the signing for the Angels.
Confused in Toronto
3:51
Please help me understand why the jays are saying they want to compete yet doing nothing. This team should trade JD, Happ l, Estrada and rebuild no?
Steve Adams
3:52
In fairness to the Jays, there are a lot of teams that haven't done anything of note yet.

And nearly every team in the AL was within 4-5 games of a Wild Card spot this season -- there's no reason for them not to try for a run with better health, in my eyes.

do we have any chance of resigning Machado if acquired?
Steve Adams
3:53
Sure. Offer him $400-425MM on an extension.
Jake Jackson
3:53
Are the cubs in on a trade for Matt Kemp?
Steve Adams
3:53
I don't think the Cubs are actively trying to downgrade their roster.

3:54
whats the hold up in the market now? machado trade? or more stemming from teams constrained by payroll or not needing hitters?
Steve Adams
3:55
I think clubs are just generally not showing as much of a willingness to spend at the levels they've previously spent at in the past. It's Dec. 19 and the biggest free agent contract to date is Tyler Chatwood's $38MM deal.
O's announced that they traded RHP Jacob Bray to the A's as the PTBNL in the Jaycob Brugman deal.
3:56
I did not know Jacob Bray was a person until 30 seconds ago, so I don't have much insight to offer beyond that.

3:56
Will Tyson Ross start this year? Does a reunion with Balsley and the Padres make sense?
Steve Adams
3:57
Some team will give him a minor league deal. Padres reunion makes sense on paper
Cashman
3:57
Who do I sign to back up Sanchez? Romine has shown that he is not even a back up catcher.
Steve Adams
3:58
I was surprised they even tendered Romine. Avila to the Yankees makes tons of sense as well. I think Rene Rivera would be an upgrade, too, but at that point they may just stick with Romine.

Do Braves make a 1-year deal with Machado until Riley is ready?
Steve Adams
4:00
There's no real point in them further depleting the farm to take on a one-year rental
Lance Lynn
4:00
Is it a strong possibility I return to St. Louis?
Steve Adams
4:00
I think that ship has largely sailed. I'd be surprised if he ended up back there.
Andrew
4:01
Santana 3/60 is the biggest
Steve Adams
4:01
This is correct -- sorry about that Chatwood gaffe. But the point remains -- $60MM being the largest deal this late into the offseason is surprising
Brew Crew GM
4:01
Julio Teheran for Domingo Santana. Either GM hang up the phone, or is there a conversation?
Steve Adams
4:01
Santana is better, cheaper and has more remaining control.
4:02
Astros also meeting with Darvish, per Jon Heyman
Jackalope
4:03
Why do you never answer my questions? What happens behind the scenes here?
Steve Adams
4:04
I've received literally thousands of questions. There've been 2000+ participants at the chat's peak this week.
Chuck-it
4:04
Profar for Pompey?
Steve Adams
4:04
I think Profar's value is generally overstated, but he's worth more than Dalton Pompey.
Dean Cain
4:05
Gurriel and Darvish has to be awkward right?
Steve Adams
4:05
Eh, Darvish didn't seem overly bothered by it. I doubt it'd take long for them to smooth things over.

Thoughts on rumor that some teams are looking at Frazier as a 2B? Something propagated by his agent?
Steve Adams
4:07
No, I think some teams would genuinely be fine putting him at 2B on occasion. I don't think anyone considers him a starter there. But he's a considerably above-average third baseman -- it's not outlandish to think he could play a passable 2B on occasion.
Jon
4:07
We here 400 million and 500 millions dollar contracts for next years crop of free agents but dont you think team are going to be timid to go the that extent see the outcomes of the pujols and cabrera deals???
Steve Adams
4:08
Machado and Harper are in the position to command those deals because they'll be signing when they're five years younger than either Pujols or Cabrera was when they signed
Tres
4:08
Cron for Profar?
Steve Adams
4:08
Again, I don't think Cron has much value at all.
Angels 2018
4:09
Your thoughts on Eppler's moves this winter?
Steve Adams
4:10
He's had a hell of an offseason to date. Still think there's work to do in the bullpen, and even after Ohtani I wouldn't mind seeing another rotation option acquired. But, generally, I think everything they've done has been great. The Cozart deal is going to go down as one of the best moves of the offseason in my eyes.
Ok, I've got to wrap up for the week. Thanks for chatting everyone. We'll do it again next week! You can ask me more on Twitter: @Adams_Steve
