Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 12/20/22

If he goes out there again and repeats his 2021-22 performance, I think you just throw all conventional norms out the window. Someone will pay him through 41 (or however late MLB allows before dubbing it a clear luxury scheme). I threw out $400MM for Devers before, but that seems like a ceiling. That feels like a floor on Ohtani, health-permitting.
Jean Segura

Why does no one love me?
Steve Adams
2:05
The market just doesn't love average-hitting, 2B only guys in general. It hasn't for several years now.
2:06
Segura will probably sign somewhere for like 2/15 and be a bargain relative to his production. He's a good player, but the demand isn't that high for 2B-only types.
Frustrated in the Red Sox Nation
2:06
I am not anticipating a Devers extension. Will the Red Sox be able to get measurably more for Devers now compared to the trade deadline.  If so, then trade him and really kick this "rebuild" into high gear.  There I have used the word no one wants to utter in reference to the Red Sox.
Steve Adams
2:07
They'd absolutely get more by moving him before Opening Day. The acquiring team is getting a full season of him, which matters if you're not one of the clubs that can already just pencil in a playoff performance based on the quality of the current roster. That team would also get to issue a qualifying offer and recoup a solid draft pick (well, depending on their luxury tax standing).
2:10
I don't think this Red Sox team is a contender as currently constructed, but all the moves they're making are geared toward winning in the short-term, so I'm not expecting a Devers deal before Opening Day. I think it'd be defensible for the front office, since I doubt ownership pays up, but I also feel like ownership wouldn't want to deal with that blowback just months after losing Xander.
GM Chris Young
2:11
I saw you wrote that my Rangers were interested in Rich Hill. I’m only a year older than him. Should I give it one more shot this spring?
Steve Adams
2:11
I am ALL FOR general manager/starting pitcher Chris Young.

Pads need one more outfielder. Who is the best fit?
Steve Adams
2:11
No one loves Profar like Preller loves Profar. Could just re-sign him.
Theo's remains

Does Ian Happ for Gleyber Torres make sense as the foundation of a trade for both teams? Torres could play 3rd base for the Cubs.
Steve Adams
2:15
I don't think it's nuts, no. I'd probably see about Hoerner playing 3B and put Gleyber at 2B, since Nico has the stronger throwing arm at this point. That'd just open another hole in the outfield for the Cubs, but I suppose they could just go sign someone.

That trade would have to assume that the Yankees don't view something like David Peralta in LF and Gleyber at 2B as a palatable option, but the Cubs do feel that's viable. In a vacuum, I prefer Happ, but two years of control over Gleyber might have some appeal to the Cubs.
Happ's a free agent next winter.

Should ChiSox resign Elvis Andrus to split time at short with Anderson
Steve Adams
2:16
Generally I think Andrus or Segura at 2B is a fine outcome for the White Sox. Might make them a little too right-handed, but the market is not exactly teeming with quality lefty-hitting options at the position.

What is your favorite Holiday Movie/Special?

Are Vasquez and Gallo seriously the best my FO could do? Surely they're not done, right?
Steve Adams
2:18
Been a brutal offseason for the Twins. I expect further moves, but they're really trumpeting the 10/285 offer to Correa, which would've felt like a legitimate offer in November but didn't feel close by the time he actually signed -- which was after the vat majority of impact free agents came off the board. It's going to be hard for them to salvage a quality offseason out of this, but let's see what they can get done on the trade market.

All Mets Fans want for christmas is.................................................
Steve Adams
2:19
Based on the questions in this chat? They want someone to graciously take James McCann's entire contract, extend Alonso and McNeil, acquire Liam Hendriks and add a bona fide middle-of-the-order hitter without sacrificing any of their top five prospects.

Seems reasonable. :)
Trade market
2:20
When do you anticipate the trade market to open up? Other than Murphy, it seems heavy on the free agents and light on trades.
Steve Adams
2:22
Sooner than later. I mean, at this point, the open market is pretty devoid of options at multiple positions. There's no starting-caliber SS, C or CF -- that's arguably true of 3B as well, depending on your opinion of Drury and Longoria. Corner OF market is cleaned out. You've got Eovaldi as the best SP but after that you're looking at like... Wacha, Cueto, Kluber and various other older 1-year types.
2:23
Might get a deal or two before the holiday slowdown, and after that I think we'll see an increased focus on trades beginning in early January.

Interesting how Aaron Hicks was worth 1.5 fWAR in 22 less games than Alex Verdugo (1.2 fWAR) but one is seen as a key part of their lineup and the other is seen as dead weight even though he's making just 10M/yr.
Steve Adams
2:25
Hicks is guaranteed $30.5MM in his age-33 through age-35 seasons and hadn't posted particularly inspiring defensive marks in recent seasons until 2022. The Yankees were underwhelmed enough by his defense to play Judge in center. Verdugo is year-to-year in arb and only 26
2:26
Wow. The Associated Press is reporting the Correa press conference was postponed due to an issue with his physical.
2:27
This could potentially get quite messy. Curious to see how this unfolds, to say the least.
Mike Rizzo
2:27
Wil Myers. Possible fit for Nats? What might an offer look like?
Steve Adams
2:27
You can shoehorn pretty much any player onto what's largely a replacement-level roster in Washington. I doubt Myers gets more than a year and I don't think he'll reach $10MM.
Twins
2:28
I can see the twins use Gallo at 3b, am I totally off base?
Steve Adams
2:28
Gallo's not playing 3B
2:29
He'll play across the outfield. Jose Miranda is playing third base. If they didn't want Miranda to play 3B, they wouldn't have traded Urshela.
2:30
