JD Martinez has to be anxious to see an end to the Stanton trade saga, no?  Seems like his market will really pick up after the Stanton trade is done.
Steve Adams
3:33
I think the whole "Stanton has handcuffed the market!!!" narrative is overplayed, but JDM is one guy whom Stanton is directly impacting in a negative way, yeah. I thought the Cardinals were one of the 2-3 best fits for Martinez, so no way he signs elsewhere unless Boston or someone makes a crazy offer.... but, tough for Boras to drive up the offers if the Cards aren't bidding just yet.

Who would be a surprisng but realistic player traded at the winter meetings?
Steve Adams
3:35
Jose Abreu? Chris Archer/Evan Longoria? Patrick Corbin? There'll be several trades that take place there in all likelihood

Who gets the bigger deal: Arrieta or Darvish?
Steve Adams
3:36
Darvish has a better track record, was better in 2017 and is nominally younger.

Have you ever thought about putting like or dislike buttons on your comments

We have them on the desktop version of the site.

Do the Cubs trade Jason Heyward?
Steve Adams
3:37
I'm sure Theo trades him every night in his dreams, but in reality the chances of them finding a taker are low enough to make Lloyd Christmas feel pessimistic.

Are you surprised Shohei didn't even meet with the NYY?
Steve Adams
3:38
Not really -- the whole "foregone conclusion" mentality that so many people had with Ohtani and the Yankees was always ludicrous to me when no one had any real clue what he was looking for.

Over / Under on # of yrs before Marlins can be legit playoff contenders?
Steve Adams
3:39
That'll depend largely on the outcome of the Stanton saga and the rest of their offseason dealings, so I'll withhold judgment for now.

Do you see the Royals as a fit for me if they are unable to sign Hosmer?
Steve Adams
3:40
Meh -- at that point if they're really going for a "substantial" rebuild, as Rustin Dodd of the KC Star suggested, then they may as well just go with Moss there or some combo of Hunter Dozier/Cheslor Cuthbert.
3:41
For the record, the notion of "We're going to rebuild but still sign Hosmer" is straight up Looney Tunes to me, but the Royals seem to have this undying love for Hoz that I cannot get my head around.

Why is LoCain so undervalued? He has had three seasons of 5.1+ WAR while JDM has had none
Steve Adams
3:43
Players who derive massive chunks of their value from defense and baserunning are always going to be underappreciated. And Cain is a 32-year-old CF who fits that description... his age gives teams a lot of pause as to how well his defense will hold up.
If he were 30, he'd be a lock for a $100MM+ deal. Age matters a lot in free agency.

How many years will I get on my next deal?

Is the signing of Yefri del Rosario a sign that the Royals are going to go for a full rebuild?
Steve Adams
3:44
It's a sign that they found a player they liked who happened to be willing to sign with them for a price point they found palatable.

3:45
All this Ohtani two-way player talk is nonsense, right?
Steve Adams
3:46
I mean -- I think it's silly to expect him to be an All-Star caliber pitcher and hitter, but he's going to get the opportunity to get 250+ ABs somewhere probably. If it isn't working out, eventually he'll probably just drop the hitting, I'd have to imagine.

Where will the Nats' 5th starter come from?  Trade, FA or minors?
Steve Adams
3:47
There aren't many great options for short-term starters on a clear win-now team in free agency. I think they'll trade for one -- my favorite fifth starter candidate du jour for them at the moment is Patrick Corbin.

How hard do you have to squint at the A's roster to see a good team?
Steve Adams
3:49
I guess it depends on your definition of "good," but not that hard for me. A full season of Chapman/Olson is exciting. Graveman and Triggs will be healthier. Defense should be improved overall on the season as a whole. Still curious to see what they do in the OF and at the back of the rotation but there are positive components.

Thoughts on the Minor Deal for the Rangers? If no Ohtani, do they move to Arrieta/Darvish?
Steve Adams
3:51
Hard to judge when we don't know the dollars, but I don't love the idea of stretching him back out as a starter. He was a monster in the bullpen last year -- I wouldn't mess with it.

Rangers are trying to cut payroll back by about $10MM this year -- I don't see them signing either Darvish or Arrieta. Maybe a Lance Lynn.
Zach Britton
3:52
Now that Minor is gone, will the Astros rekindle talks for me?
Steve Adams
3:54
Can they be convinced that he's healthy? Zach Britton wasn't anywhere near his normal self in '17. The name value there is vastly greater than the actual on-field value. You're looking at a guy that's going to make $13MM+ and had 7 K/9 against 4 BB/9 while missing half the season with forearm issues.

Plus, the O's won't trade him without getting something huge back, since he's such a core piece to that team. Hard pass for me. Find another good lefty. Go get Brad Hand. Or just don't bother limiting yourself to handedness and push for Raisel Iglesias.

Nick Gordon and international signing bonus to the Padres for Brad Hand. Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:54
Can't see the Twins giving up Gordon for two years of Brad Hand.
Mark
3:54
Do the Twins add a right handed free agent bat like Jose Bautista or Mark Reynolds?
Steve Adams
3:55
If the Twins aim to add a bat... they're going to aim higher than that.

3:55
Will Ohtani sign before the Winter meetings?
Steve Adams
3:56
Think it was Buster Olney who said some teams think he'll be introduced by a new team there, so it seems perfectly plausible -- especially if he's meeting with two teams a day like he did yesterday.
