Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/30/24

Minnesota's rally sausage is both quite entertaining and very disgusting haha. Baldelli's pained look while having to discuss that thing during his media scrum the other day -- just a "what the hell am I actually talking about right now and how is this my life?" tone -- was pretty funn
funny

Should I consider a six man rotation?
Steve Adams
2:05
I don't think it could hurt the Phillies. I can't remember whether it was just one of their writers (Matt Gelb?) pointing it out or whether DD or Thompson said it, but Wheeler has much better numbers in his career when he doesn't get that extra day of rest, so maybe they're wary of regularly affording him that extra rest. Could still probably find ways to get Turnbull some more starts though, or possibly piggyback him. He's obviously not THIS good -- .175 BABIP, 90% strand rate -- but he's certainly earned a longer look

I know its early, but, are you surprised by the A's?
Steve Adams
2:06
I think in chatting with Anthony or Darragh I made a "bold" prediction prior to the season that the A's would only be like the 4th or 5th-worst team in the game, haha. I'm a bit surprised, but it's still a small sample and I also didn't think they were a candidate to lose like 120 this year in the first place.

If the cards go the route of a rebuild, am I the first player out the door?
Steve Adams
2:09
Doubt it. They beat the market on Gray, meaning they were willing to pay him more than anyone else in the first place. That $25MM-per-year deal isn't going to be super appealing to everyone -- especially luxury-tax teams.

Guys like Helsley (controlled through '25), Kittredge (FA this winter), Lynn/Gibson if they're pitching well, Goldy if he's rebounded -- they'll all be likelier/easier to move

Why is it called a 'recall' when a player is coming up to make his debut?  If it's his first time up, shouldn't it just be a 'call'?
Steve Adams
2:09
It's only a recall if the player is on the 40-man roster. A player on the 40-man has to be optioned to the minors whenever he's sent down in spring training. He's being recalled from that optional assignment.
2:10
If someone's being added, their contract is "selected" or "purchased" to the 40-man roster.

Who is the most handsome MLB player?
Steve Adams
2:10
When the White Sox called up Nick Nastrini the only thing I saw in our social media feeds all day was what a handsome devil that dude is.

In fairness, hard to argue. Good lookin' cat
