Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/1/18

"Every spring" is a bit hyperbolic considering no one was saying "if he can hit..." in his first year with the Cubs. He's signed for six more years; they're stuck with him for now. (And contact rate isn't really his problem)

how close are vladimir guerrero jr and bo bichette to being mlb ready? will we see them called up this season ?
Steve Adams
3:28
Vlad Jr. is 18 and hasn't played above A-ball. Bichette is 19 and hasn't played above A-ball. Not in 2018

Joey Bats to the ChiSox? Would love to hear Hawk call a homerun hit to the fundamentals deck.
Steve Adams
3:28
Seems reasonable enough with a low base and a hope that he rebounds/turns into a trade chip. They could just stash him at DH more often than not.
3:30
The number of Jacoby Ellsbury trade propositions I get on a weekly bases is truly something.

Since many of you aren't used to chatting with me on Tuesdays, I shall answer them all in one fell swoop: I don't think he's going to be traded anywhere, no.

I have 15mil to spend, if i move warren 3mil... is it enough for Yu?
Steve Adams
3:31
Darvish is going to command $22-25MM+, and the luxury tax is calculated by annual value; unless they move a huge contract -- again, I do not envision that -- then no, it's not.

I don't think the Yankees are serious contenders for Darvish.

How much do you think the Ohtani pitcher/hitter experiment will affect how the Rays handle Brendan McKay?
Steve Adams
3:32
They're different players that even play different positions when on the field. It might impact the way in which they structure McKay's recovery process between starts, but I don't think success or failure with Ohtani is going to influence the Rays' decision with McKay. If he continues developing as a two-way player, it'll be based on his own merit

Is the 8 years for Hosmer a last ditch push from Boras before he signs with the Royals?
Steve Adams
3:33
It's been eight years or more all offseason. I don't think it's last-ditch. All things equal, he'll probably go back to KC, yeah
Ant-Man
3:34
Not counting Yu, Arietta, Cobb, Lynn, who would you take for a starting pitcher from what's left?
Steve Adams
3:35
There's not really much out there. I'd probably just sign Trevor Cahill on the cheap and see if he can replicate the extremely intriguing numbers he posted in San Diego last year before his shoulder blew up.

Could roll the dice on Tillman's shoulder as well.
Yankees
3:35
Do you see Cobb to Yankees for 4yr/about 62 million? Hes really not worth 18-20 is he?
Steve Adams
3:35
I don't think he's worth four years or $15.5MM either.

The Headley trade kind of backfiring on the team, as they now appear to be stuck with him? Or do you think the plan all along was to keep him?
Steve Adams
3:36
The trade was always to get Bryan Mitchell. If they eat the remainder of the Headley contract, then so be it. They were cognizant of that risk when they acquired him.

That said, Headley on a one-year deal wouldn't fetch $13MM on the open market, but he's hardly a useless player and he could easily justify that salary with regular playing time in '18
3:37
And if you're stuck with kind a one-win, bench-ish guy -- eh, not the end of the world.
It's Not Me...It's You
3:37
Do you think Matt Kemp would fit in Cleveland?
Steve Adams
3:37
Matt Kemp belongs in the Jacoby Ellsbury school of "I can't fathom a team giving anything up for this guy or even taking on half his contract."
3:38
If the Dodgers cut him loose, sure a league-min flier from Cleveland makes sense. But you can't play Kemp in the OF at this point, and Encarnacion is going to DH more often than not.
Hell, I think I just talked myself out of a league-min flier from Cleveland even.

Do the Brewers still have the prospect package required to acquire Chris Archer after the Yelich deal?
Steve Adams
3:40
Absolutely. They're still in the top third of farm systems or thereabouts. But again, I don't think the Rays are going to move Archer unless some team offers up a comical overpay; there's no indication Milwaukee (or anyone) is going to do so.
Archer is on one of the best contracts in all of baseball for any pitcher, and the only way you don't love the guy is if you judge him solely on his ERA. (which no team would do, of course)
Wizard of Waxahachie

Do Tillman, Miley and Ulbaldo get Major League contracts?
Steve Adams
3:41
Definitely yes on Tillman, yes on Miley and probably not on Ubaldo.
Sharon Cox
3:41
Do my hometown Mariners have any shot at signing Jake Arrieta?
Steve Adams
3:42
Signing free agents to that kind of contract isn't really DIpoto's MO. Most of the big FA signings from his time with the Halos came when owner Arte Moreno went over his head.
Paulie
3:42
Are the Rays going to open the season with Willy Adams's on the roster?
Steve Adams
3:42
Nah but he could be up by mid-June once they've got an extra year of control over him and have avoided Super Two status.
AJ Preller
3:43
Am I really the worst gm in the current era?
Steve Adams
3:43
Not sure who said that, but no -- not by a long shot
Preller has built a really, really nice farm and likely only "WENT FOR IT" in such aggressive fashion early in his tenure with some nudging from ownership. The medical withholding stuff was slimy, but all GMs are always trying to game the system.
Lex Luthor
3:44
Does David Dahl have any trade value at this point?
Steve Adams
3:44
I'm sure plenty of teams would love to buy low on him. But his value was exponentially higher last winter, and i doubt the Rox have any inclination to sell low on such a high-upside and still-young asset
Clay Buchholz

Minor League deal comin' your way at some point
