Alderson said this morning it's unlikely.
Johnny

Having cleared Cole and McCutchen's salaries off the books, do the Pirates steal a FA with that money?
Steve Adams
3:45
I think they'll reinvest some of it (probably not all of it) into a reliever, outfielder and/or rotation option they feel has more value than his market reflects

Say something about the Giants!!!
Steve Adams
3:46
They're still going to finish 3rd place at best? (Sorry.)
LPFan

Nationals fifth starter is?
Steve Adams
3:46
Someone not in the organization yet. I still like them as a fit for Patrick Corbin, Otherwise, maybe a Jason Vargas for one year.
HOF
3:47
Seems ridiculous to me that Edgar isn't a HOF yet.  If he wasn't a DH, he would for sure already be in the hall.  Do you see him getting in next time up?  He is one of the best hitters of his generation regardless if he's a DH!!
Steve Adams
3:48
He should get in next year, yeah. The whole "he didn't play defense" argument makes no sense to me when many of those same voters turn around and then vote for a one-inning pitcher like Hoffman who's only going in because of saves and not because of per-inning dominance.

I don't mind Hoffman going in, but if you're going to put him in then you need Edgar in and you certainly need Billy Wagner in.

I generally look at the Hall as a museum rather than some sort of elitist club that's going to be tainted if someone "undeserving" goes in.

And it boggles my mind that Jack Morris and his 105 career ERA+ and Andre Dawson's lifetime .320 career OBP were so avidly championed for by many guys that think Edgar isn't even a borderline candidate.
In conclusion: Hall of Fame voting is silly and rife with hypocrisy and conflicting narratives, so I generally steer clear of it. This is the largest number of words I've dedicated to my own opinion on it in quite some time.

Is Dustin Ackley a fit for the Royals?
Steve Adams
3:51
There's not much reason to hold out a lot of hope on Ackley. He'll land somewhere on a minor league deal if he wants, but eh -- I think we're well beyond where he's a "fit" and more just "who's willing to even give him a AAA spot?"

Any optimism for Jose Peraza? He's really disappointed so far, but the hit tool is still exciting, and the SS job seems to be his for the taking
Steve Adams
3:53
I like the contact rates and the speed, and I think they're wise to try to give him another shot of near-everyday ABs, but man he needs to take some pitches already

What in the world is the Giants thinking, going the opposite direction the rest of baseball is.
Steve Adams
3:54
They didn't have a lot of money to spend while staying under the tax line, and they didn't have the prospects to acquire controllable, low-salary assets. So they found an undervalued set of commodities -- players on the wrong side of 30 that still delivered recent value -- and found teams willing to pay some of the remaining money down to get some talent in return.

I don't think they did enough to make the postseason -- not with the Dodgers, D-backs and Rox in that division -- but it's impressive what they were able to acquire without much of a farm system or much of a bankroll.

3:55
Any chance I go back to the rays on a 1 year deal?
Steve Adams
3:55
Duda at one year is more likely. If LoMo's taking one year it'll be from a team willing to pay him more for that one season than Tampa Bay is.
Medic Mike
3:56
Who do you think some of the big names will be this trade deadline?
Steve Adams
3:57
Machado, Britton, maybe Donaldson, McCutchen, Adam Jones, Brad Brach, Alex Colome/Jake Odorizzi (if not traded in the next couple weeks), Raisel Iglesias, Billy Hamilton, Danny Duffy
NEED TO KNOW!
3:58
Why is it that MLB contracts for older players are not set up to show move value early and decreasing as they age. The dollar amount of the contract could be the same. The player gets more money early and the team pays the premium price for the better assumed years.
Steve Adams
3:59
Because teams generally have more money on the books in the upcoming season, so they backload the deal to avoid luxury tax, remain profitable, etc. in the early years of the deal. Also, $20MM in 2022 is worth less than $20MM in 2018, so backloading the deal makes sense from an inflation standpoint as well.
If teams have the immediate payroll space, I agree that frontloading the deals is a fine idea, even if it technically means you're paying a bit more in actual money than you would by backloading. But that's rarely the case.

What did you think of Fallout 3?
Steve Adams
4:00
Random -- but it was terrific. As was 4.
Stephen
4:00
Steve to Steve, why would Frazier not be worth 2 yrs?
Steve Adams
4:00
I think he is -- some teams clearly don't agree. There aren't that many contending clubs looking for corner infield help, and the ones that are have many options from which to choose... that has hurt hum substantially
Jason
4:00
Kierboom, severino, fedde for realmuto. Who says no?
Steve Adams
4:00
If I'm the Marlins I hold out.
Jays Fan
4:01
Jays land one of Tillman, Garcia, Hellickson, Vargas on an economic 1-2 year deal?
Steve Adams
4:01
I doubt Hellickson even gets a Major League deal.
4:02
The others at 1-2 years seems plausible enough. 1/6 for Tillman, maybe 2/15 fr Garcia and 1/10 for Vargas -- though who knows what SPs will sign for in the coming weeks? Those all made sense to me months ago but the market obviously isn't exactly panning out like anyone imagined.
Jerome
4:03
Is Carlos Gonzalez to Cleveland logical?
Steve Adams
4:03
I don't think they have the cash left unless they can move Kipnis or a comparably priced asset.
Eppler
4:04
Would Keon Broxton be a good target for a 4th outfielder for the Angels? He can split some time in right with Calhoun v. LHP. What would it take to get him?
Steve Adams
4:04
Another right-handed bat doesn't seem optimal when they already have Maldonado/Rivera, Pujols, Kinsler, Simmons, Cozart, Upton and Trout.
Justin Allen
4:04
Rick Hahn mention they had extended some 9 figure contracts.  Except  Moustakas, who else really makes sense?
Steve Adams
4:05
My read on that was that he was saying in the past, they've done so. I took it as a question about their largest contract ever is still Abreu's $68MM.
The trash men

Do you think the Angels going for Arrieta makes sense? Price probably dropped and would it really affect the finances long term?
