Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/1/18

Adding an Arrieta or Darvish is going to put them right up against the luxury tax threshold. I don't think the price has dropped as much as you're implying. And if it drops at all, it'll drop in years but escalate in AAV, which then almost certainly puts them over the tax line.

Is it reasonable to expect 30 homers from DeJong next year?
Steve Adams

I'd take the under even though he hit 38 between the Majors and Minors last year. If he gets there it'll probably come with a .240-.250 average and a .300ish OBP given his strikeout rates and apparent allergy to walks

Chris Taylor ends up as LAD every day 2B? Instant top 5 infield in the league?

Seems more ticketed for CF work from what I've read

Any chance MLB adopts a free agency system similar to the NFL in which there is a salary cap as well as sufficient revenue sharing to make all teams equal? The luxury tax is currently about 190 million. While this does keep spending down, most of the small market teams cannot come close to this size payroll.

Owners would never agree on the rev sharing, MLBPA would never agree on the cap. (Or partially-guaranteed deals)
That's always my favorite in the NFL...

"So and so signed a $155MM contract!"
"Wow!"
"Yeah with $40MM guaranteed!"
That's not a $155MM contract, ha.

Is my horrific second half of 2017 scaring off potential employers?  Who do you think my boss will be in 2018?
Steve Adams

He's an innings-eating fifth starter. No team was buying his clearly unsustainable first half. Teams probably figure they can expect 180 innings and a low 4.00s ERA. It's not useless but it's not great.

Who had the most absurd asking price this offseason? Hosmer, Moose, JDM, Cobb, or Lynn?
Steve Adams
4:12
Can I choose all of the above? I might pick Cobb and Lynn if we're looking at a pure percentage basis; they each went out seeking more than double what would be reasonably expected even in an aggressive winter and more than 3x what seems remotely rational

180 innings and a low 4.00s ERA is a lot better than a 5th starter, no? Only 34 pitchers in MLB last year threw at least 160 innings and had an ERA of 4.15 or better.
Steve Adams

Yeah, should've just said 4th/5th -- I don't get too caught up in numerical designations for pitchers, generally speaking, since they're so subjective.
Vargas is a back end guy, and that's what teams will expect. He'll keep you competitive for the most part, but he's 36 and doesn't really have any upside.

Ok, I have to call it for the week. I'll chat again next Tuesday. Jeff will be back next Thursday.

You can ask me more stuff on Twitter if you're so inclined: @Adams_Steve

Thanks for chatting everyone, and enjoy the remainder of your week / Super Bowl weekend
