Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/16/21

Could the Jays conceivably sign both Walker and Odorizzi? Seattle bringing back Paxton seemingly takes them out of the running for Walker and Shoemaker signing with the Twins suggests they may no longer be in on Odorizzi.

I don't think they will, but if you're saying "conceivably" -- no reason they can't. Doing so still wouldn't put them near the luxury tax (not that that should matter, but it does to most teams), and they've spent way more on payroll in the past than they would even with both in the fold.
Jays fans should be happy with one of the two, but the Jays have spent at that level in the past, so conceivable? Sure.

With the cubs looking for a lefty 2B could Adam Frazier make sense there?
Tank Commander
3:01
Why do so many teams look like they're not even trying?  Is it the salary structure?
Steve Adams
3:02
Because the league has inextricably tied the acquisition of talent to a team's win-loss percentage under the misguided delusion that doing so will help keep smaller-market teams competitive. All it's actually done is usher in this nonsense about competitive cycles and the swiss-cheese narrative that total rebuilds and teardowns are simple necessities for clubs to compete.

Any chance the Yankees trade Miguel Andujar to Detroit for one of their top pitching prospects not named Mize,Skubal  or Manning?
Steve Adams
3:04
Wouldn't really be one of the Tigers' "top" pitching prospects if those three were off the table.

I think the Yankees would want someone with some MLB experience but still multiple years of control if they were moving Andujar.
He doesn't have a spot on the 26-man roster right now, but the depth is still nice for them.

Are the Royals the breakout team of 2021? i personally think they could shock and snag the last WC spot if Tampa's new SP adds dont pan out.
Steve Adams
3:06
They'd need a lot to break right for them -- big performances out of all their top pitching prospects (Lynch, Singer, Bubic, Kowar), a rebound for Soler/Benintendi/Santana/Minor ... I think they'll be improved, but it'll take awhile to get all the kids up and contributing, and success won't be that immediate across the board.
3:07
2022 feels likelier to me, particularly with Bobby Witt, Asa Lacy and others moving up through the system

3:07
Does David Robertson get a ML deal? Where?
Steve Adams
3:09
The track record is so good that yeah, I can see a big league deal. Probably a cheap one. Cubs are still looking for those types of arms. Twins. Phillies. Braves.
3:10
Phillies have the Girardi connection and we've seen a few former Yankees go there, though that's only a loose and speculative connection.
Padres
3:10
How much longer do the Padres have to pay Myers and Hosmer?
Steve Adams
3:10
Myers signed through '22; Hosmer through '25
3:11
Hoz's deal is front-loaded at least, so the final three years are, ahem, "only" $13M per
Logan Kowatsch
3:11
Thoughts on the signing of Derek Fisher where will he end up on the brewers roster?
Steve Adams
3:13
It's cash/player to be named for a guy who was a top draft pick by the Astros when current Brewers president David Stearns was still in Houston. I'd imagine he just believes in the talent/makeup and wants to take a low-cost look at him as a depth option this spring. He's not even a lock to make the Opening Day roster since he's out of options.

Bryant for J. D. Davis +?
Steve Adams
3:14
My answer is the same as it was in last week's chat, with the updated/added caveat that Cubs president Jed Hoyer today called those rumors flat-out "inaccurate" and said he's not in any trade talks:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/02/mlbtr-live-chat-580.html
3:15
Hoyer doesn't have to make those comments. He can easily no-comment it and no one would think twice. If he's going out of his way to say he expects this group to stay intact for Opening Day, that's what we should all expect.

Do you see the Giants trading Longo for another 3B who possibly costs less but performs at a higher level?
Steve Adams
3:16
Why would another team trade a cheaper, better 3B to the Giants for an older, inferior one?

Does Vlad get some starts at 3b this season?
Steve Adams
3:17
I can see it, sure, but he's a 1B/DH long term still

3:18
How much do you think Corey Seager asks for in FA/extension talks?
Steve Adams
3:20
I doubt he's particularly open to an extension right now, but he'll be a 27-going-on-28 free agent Boras client who plays shortstop with legitimate MVP upside/ceiling. It'll all depend on how 2021 goes and perhaps on who of Lindor/Story/Baez/Correa sign extensions (and for how much), but it feels safe to expect he's looking north of $200MM right now.

Over/Under Years/AAV for Lindor: 6.5, $25M?
Steve Adams
3:20
Over on both. handily

3:20
Will I have to settle for a contract similar to the one the Brewers gave Grandal a few years ago?
Steve Adams
3:21
He already signed almost that exact contract with the Blue Jays.
Grayson
3:21
Did JBJ and Boras screw themselves out of a good contract by setting unrealistic expectations in free agency? Gotta assume the Mets are now out after grabbing Pillar. I really just see the Astros being left over.
Steve Adams
3:22
Yeah if they were looking 4-5 years I don't think that was ever viable. But an injury in Spring Training can open a new landing spot, and we've seen plenty of instances where Boras and a client hold out for a big deal, settle for one year, then get paid the following winter. (Kendrys Morales, Dallas Keuchel, Mike Moustakas, etc.)

Not that it's a situation unique to Boras, of course
