Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/16/21

Brandon Crawford

Where do I go when my contract is up? Do I sign a sunset deal to stay here, or do I just flat out retire? I don’t leave to go somewhere else do I?
Steve Adams
3:26
I could see a one-year deal, I suppose, but they're not going to want to have such an established player within the franchise's history blocking Marco Luciano. I'd lean toward him looking elsewhere; I haven't read up on his thoughts on playing with another club, but Crawford would be heading into his age-35 season next year. It's totally plausible to me that he'd want to keep going and the new Giants front office, which isn't beholden to him, thanks him for his service and moves on.
Jose Berrios
3:27
Now that Falvey says the heavy lifting is done on free agents, it's surely time to extend my stay i MN isnt't it?
Steve Adams
3:29
Berrios has been pretty intent on trying to move the market forward for future generations. I don't think he'd take a huge discount, nor do I think the Twins would be inclined to spend at the level necessary when they could go year-to-year and just try to re-sign him in free agency.

I imagine they'll talk again this spring, of course, but they've talked the past 2-3 and not come up with anything.

What would a Giolito extension look like?
Steve Adams
3:34
Giolito has 3+ years of service but hasn't reached 4 yet. The current record extension for a pitcher in that service class is Carlos Martinez's 2017 extension: five years, $51MM. Based on how old that deal is and on Giolito's breakout over the past couple years, I have to imagine he'd want to break it comfortably.

He's making $4.15MM this season after avoiding arbitration, so you could probably project him for another $17-18MM more in arb even if you're erring on the conservative side. Tack on three free-agent years at a more up-to-date market rate for him, and maybe you come in around $65-70MM over five years?

He may not take it, but offering a record would at least get the ball rolling. It all depends on his personal motivations, though; I wouldn't blame him one bit if he said "I'm only signing an extension if I shatter my service class record" and asked for $100MM+
Alex Reyes
3:34
Will I win the 5th starting pitcher spot over Carlos Martinez?
Steve Adams
3:35
Reyes has pitched a total of 87 innings since the 2016 season ended.
3:36
I think Cardinals fans need to give up on the idea of him pitching as a starter anytime soon. If he gave you 40 innings out of the bullpen, you'd have to consider that a good year.

I have two more needs...closer and center fielder. Doesnt it make sense for me to pull the trigger on both JBJ and Trevor Rosenthal?
Steve Adams
3:36
Sure. Just need to convince Astros owner Jim Crane to go over the luxury tax.
3:37
For a second straight season, too.
(I don't think it's happening -- but yes, generally, I agree they should be looking at both moves)
Al Avila
3:38
Who would be some FA the Tigers could still be looking at?
Steve Adams
3:38
Avila said they're still looking at pitching help today. I'd imagine affordable starters in the one-year range.

Is Sonny Gray getting traded before Opening Day?
Steve Adams
3:39
At this point I would lean strongly against that possibility
Brett
3:39
Honestly, I’m okay, everyone. I just need some time to myself.
Steve Adams
3:39
Oh thank go-- WAIT IS THIS EVEN BRETT
Logan Kowatsch
3:40
Could the Brewers trade Josh Hader for Jose Ramirez
Steve Adams
3:40
No, they could not.
Falvey
3:41
Who will my 5th starter be?
Steve Adams
3:42
Again, people need to deviate from the conventional five-man rotation notion for 2020. The Twins have at least six starters -- Maeda, Berrios, Pineda, Happ, Shoemaker, Dobnak -- and will probably give starts to Lewis Thorpe, Devin Smeltzer and others (eventually Jhoan Duran and Jordan Balazovic).

Most clubs are going to use 10-15 starters this year
Maybe more.

Am I going to the Queen City for Senzel and/or Mahle?
Steve Adams
3:43
The Reds haven't spent at all this winter, and the Rockies' GM plainly stated he expects Story to open the season in Colorado. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

3:44
Who do you think has highest ceiling of Dahl, Lowe, Solak?
Steve Adams
3:44
Dahl might be the most talented but the injuries have really hampered him. I'm excited to see Nate Lowe get an actual look. Solak's value is hindered by the glove, but the bat is interesting.

Is it crazy that I think the Angels’ rotation will be kinda good this year? Bundy reinvented himself, Ohtani’s had time to heal, and they’ve got four more guys who can give you plenty of league-average innings.
Steve Adams
3:46
Nah, it's not crazy to think. I generally think their need for SP is somewhat overstated because people just expect them to have 100 injuries every year now. Then again, that theory has also yet to be disproven.

Bundy/Heaney/Canning/Ohtani could be a pretty solid top four, though, and they have some flotsam they can play around with around the back of the mix. Maybe they get a step forward from Barria or Sandoval. I don't think I'm super bullish on the mix, but people act like their rotation group is devoid of talent, which is clearly not the case.

Extremely early picks for most likely deadline trade candidates?
Steve Adams
3:47
Just put the Pirates, Orioles and Rockies' rosters all on a wall and throw a dart.
3:48
Ok, I have to call this for the week. Thanks, as always, for chatting. I'll do one again next Tuesday, and we should have a Connor chat Thursday, a Front Office subscriber chat Friday and a Mark chat over the weekend. In the meantime, I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Thanks for chatting, and enjoy your week!
