They're not selling Lawlar just to get rid of Montgomery's contract, no.

Why do the Tigers sign Cobb for the same price they could have Verlander? Also, shocker that Cobb is already hurt and likely going for surgery on other hip...
Steve Adams
1:53
I wouldn't call Verlander any more of a health certainty than Cobb, and at the time Cobb signed, SP prices were at their apex. I didn't love the deal for them, but Scott Harris was part of bringing Cobb to San Francisco, too, and clearly likes the pitcher.

He's quite good when healthy -- that's just not often enough. You can argue they should've waited and scooped up someone whose market kind of collapsed, but they did that with Flaherty anyhow.
1:54
Also, there's nothing to indicate Cobb is going to have surgery on his other hip. I recognize you're likely just voicing your exasperation with the signing, but just clarifying for others, haha

With Vladimir Guerrero being a free agent after this season, where do you think he will go in 2026?
Steve Adams
1:58
There's already (predictably) a bunch of articles and TV segments and such being dedicated to this topic. The reality is that we won't have a good idea of his market until the offseason, and even then it could look way different mid-December than early November.

Every year there are these narratives that Player X is going to Team B once he's a free agent like 7 months later. I don't get caught up in them because it's pointless. The Yankees were going to sign Patrick Corbin and Cody Bellinger (hey they did trade for him... 2-3 years later). The Tigers were going to sign Carlos Correa or Alex Bregman.

I expect the majority of big-market, big-spending clubs to be in on Guerrero next offseason.

True or false: Anthony Santander will hit over 150 home runs in the 5 years of his new contract.
Steve Adams

I'll take the under. Besides, if he's on pace for that after three years, he might just opt out.

Does Stroman to the Pirates make any sense?  Obviously one strike against that is that he doesn’t make the league minimum and he’s not a middle infielder that can’t hit.  Gives their strength an extra boost, limits need of Oviedo at beginning and gives them an interesting player to flip in July.

Even if the Yankees covered like $12MM of this year's $18MM salary, the vesting player option is too much of a risk for the Pirates.

Can the Yankees get somebody to take Stroman so can get under tax level or is there somebody they can cut
Steve Adams
2:01
There's no "getting under" the tax for the Yankees. Trading him would drop them out of the top tier of penalty and into the third tier, but there's no benefit to that other than money saved. Their top pick in the next year's draft would still be pushed back 10 spots simply for being in tier three.

Will either of these happen this year, 1) White Sox lose 122 games 2) Dodgers win 117 games?
Steve Adams
2:01
No, but just for fun.....
2:02
Which is likelier?

White Sox lose 122 (46.7% | 217 votes)

Dodgers win 117 (53.3% | 248 votes)

When Seattle was slashing payroll a few years ago the said it was to make room to sign upcoming  'generational talent' in free agency.  Is Donovan Solano a generational talent?  Which generation?
Steve Adams
2:03
I don't recall the Mariners ever saying that. I do recall Jerry Dipoto saying, at multiple points, that he prefers to operate via trade and thinks free agency should be more of a supplement.

is sherman really serious?

Marlins are proof that a new owner is not always the silver bullet fans are hoping for

Assuming the money gets figured out, what teams would have the most interest in Yoshida?
Steve Adams
2:05
Broken record alert from me: I see Yoshida's trade value as nonexistent. I think he'd get like $5-8MM as a free agent. I don't think there are any teams that would have interest even if the Sox were eating half the contract.

WHO is realistic in on paying $450M for Vladdy? Some teams could, but already have alot of $ on the books, re; Padres, Philly.
Steve Adams
2:08
Mets, Tigers, Yankees, Angels, Jays, Nats, Rangers all have the payroll capacity and/or the nice clean long-term payroll outlook. Mariners too, if they're willing to break from their aversion to free agency and if ownership is willing to spend at all after sitting on its hands for two winters.

Mike Hazen really talked on getting a closer and they signed Graveman. Nothing against Graveman, he can definitely be a solid bullpen piece, but hopefully he is still trying to find  a closer?
Steve Adams
2:09
Hazen's original comments on wanting a closer came before they signed Corbin Burnes. If one domino of that deal was that they don't sign the more proven ninth-inning guy they want, that seems pretty justifiable.
Braves

So it seems the braves are in fact going to dip under the tax this yr?
Steve Adams

Does seem that way, yes.

How much would it cost to extend Greene?
Steve Adams
2:16
Riley Greene is at 2+ years of service but isn't a Super Two player. There aren't many great comps for 2+ outfielders. Yordan Alvarez signed 6/115, but he was really more like a 3+ at that point since he was partway through his third year of MLB action already.

I could see Greene landing between the $70MM guaranteed to Yoan Moncada on his extension and the $100MM guaranteed to Bregman on his first contract. Both were 2+ guys with plenty of pedigree (as Greene has) and strong early-career performances. Something like $30MM for the arb years and $22MM per FA year with a buyout on a sixth-year option? I'm just going completely off the cuff here so I might tweak it a bit if given the chance to sit down and chew on it for a bit longer. But I'd be surprised if it was under $70MM.

And even 5 guaranteed years with a club option still gets him to free agency at 30

Will a RH Batter ever hit a home run that lands in McCovey Cove?
Steve Adams

Heliot Ramos did last year!

White Sox have signed a bunch of people off the scrap heap; any chance they can flip any of them for something useful or is a Robert rebound their only hope for a meaningful return?
Steve Adams
2:19
Robert is their best/only chance at a massive haul, but they could get a return of modest note if Josh Rojas, Mike Tauchman or someone of that ilk has a nice first half.

I guess there's always the chance this is the year Andrew Vaughn finally puts it together, in which case he could hit his way into being a big time deadline chip, but I've mostly given up on the idea of Vaughn blossoming into a star-caliber hitter.

What do you see from Joey Ortiz this season? If he changes to SS will it change his outlook? When will Brewers announce how they are rolling
Steve Adams
2:20
Owner Mark Attanasio pretty strongly hinted yesterday that Ortiz is likely the one going to SS. Talked about getting ABs for Oliver Dunn and Tyler Black at 3B and noted how "Ortiz can slide over"

Is there a plan to update the MLBTR app at any point in the future? I love the content but the app has sooooo many issues.
Steve Adams

A new version of the app is in development, yeah

Why not let us sample the front office chat by allowing us to read one from a week or two ago instead of blindly signing up?
Steve Adams
2:23
You can sign up for Front Office and at any point ask for your money back if you don't feel it's worth it. We're not holding onto peoples' cash if they email us and say "Actually this didn't meet my expectations."

Tbh, I think they only answer questions from money subscribers anyways
