Are the Jays seriously going to sit tight with the rotation as is, or will another move be made for a legit starter?
Steve Adams
2:29
Another starter. There are still good names out there. They like Odorizzi. Paxton and Walker still unsigned. Could roll the dice on a Folty/Archer type of upside gamble.
C Young
2:30
Jake Lamb or Renato Nunez have greatest upside on player side? Archer or Folty on pitching side?
Steve Adams
2:31
Lamb easily over Nunez for me. Folty/Archer is totally dependent on health. If I had to roll the dice, I'd go with Folty, just because Archer is coming back from TOS and the general post-TOS track record throughout the league is brutal.

I go to market next year as the top option at 2B, not as the 8th best SS, right?
Steve Adams
2:32
He'll go to market open to playing either spot -- and probably open to 3B, too. And he'll take the best offer out there regardless of what position the team wants him to play.

Is no DH in the NL a done deal or could it still happen?
Steve Adams
2:33
Not a done deal, but the Union's position continues to be it has no incentive to even negotiate. It's hard to disagree. The league keeps trying to frame this like "They won't negotiate with us!" But that overlooks the point that they already negotiated. Five years ago. The 2021 season is included in the current CBA, and it calls for a 162-game season, as it would any year.

If the league wants expanded playoffs so bad -- and it does, very badly -- it should offer something the players actually want. Floating the universal DH (something the league wants as badly or even more badly than the MLBPA) as a concession is laughable.
2:34
Angels suspend Mickey Callaway, per a team announcement.

Nick Krall, a GM that is a deer in the highlights or a GM that is truly capable of getting a decent SS?
Steve Adams
2:35
It's not his fault that ownership won't spend the money necessary to sign one of the free-agent shortstops.
2:36
I'm sure he, in his first season as standalone GM without a president of baseball ops over him, doesn't relish being made to dump Raisel Iglesias' salary and non-tender Archie Bradley. But he's not the one writing the checks.

Can Cards bring back Wong?
Steve Adams
2:36
Doesn't sound like they plan to

More likely scenario, Trevor Bauer is unsigned by the start of spring training because no one has met his demands, or he caves and signs for less than he’s asking for?
Steve Adams
2:37
Unsigned by the start of camp

2:37
Do you see Kyle Seager being moved?  Perhaps a more realistic Braves trade option than Jose Ramirez?
Steve Adams
2:38
I don't see him being moved with the clause in his contract that converts his $15MM club option for the 2022 season into a player option. But I would still consider that scenario likelier than the Indians trading Ramirez.

If Reds aren't selling, are there any SP trade targets left?
Steve Adams
2:39
I would imagine teams are going to be knocking down the door at Coors Field seeing if German Marquez is available. Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela, too, to much lesser extents. (Marquez > Freeland > Senzatela)

Any chance the Yankees resign Paxton? Or add another Sp? Feel like they need one more than another OF’er
Steve Adams
2:41
It won't be Paxton, as his asking price would put them over the luxury tax. Could add a cheap SP for a million or two as camp nears or even after it opens. I agree it's a more pressing on-paper need but totally understand if they prefer to go with Gardner. He's still a decent player, and I won't pretend that clubhouse leadership and chemistry don't exist, even though they're impossible to quantify. I'm sure they value that aspect of a reunion heavily.

Where will Benintendi be playing opening day?
Steve Adams
2:42
Probably in Boston at this point.
Er... wherever the Red Sox open the season. I guess I don't know off hand if they open at home or on the road, ha.

2:42
Any other retirement announcements coming?
Steve Adams
2:44
Seems there's quite a few this time every year, but I don't have any insight into who's next or anything at the moment. I know Neil Walker last year was saying he might retire if he didn't make the Phillies' roster out of camp. He made the club but didn't have a great year ... wouldn't be a shock to see him call it rather than take a non-guaranteed deal, just based on that context.

How much trade value does Jon Gray have? PTBNL or a top 30 guy?
Steve Adams
2:45
He's a project, but he should still get a prospect or two of note if they decide to move him. No one's dealing from the top of their rankings to get him, but he's more than jut a PTBNL type of guy
2:46
Or at least he should be. But if you told me a week ago "Do you think the Cards could trade Austin Gomber, Elehuris Montero and a bunch of shrug emojis for Nolan Arenado and $50MM" I'd have told you to stop trolling or seek professional help.

Where do I end up signing with universal DH? Where without universal DH??
Steve Adams
2:47
I think he goes back to the Twins quickly, barring a very sudden universal DH announcement. If the league announced that tomorrow, I think I said previously in one of these that I would expect A.J. Preller to come runnin' with an offer to go to San Diego.
Too bad
2:48
Are the Brewers going the way of the Pirates? Waiting for a fire sale?
Steve Adams
2:48
Answer here will be similar to the one with the Braves question earlier. This is pretty common for the Brewers; they wait out value adds and take advantage of one-year opportunities for veteran players whose markets haven't developed as hoped.
2:49
I expect they'll do the same this winter and add a handful of useful vets on one-year pacts in the next few weeks.
Mike
2:49
How many questions do you have so far?
Steve Adams
2:49
Hundreds? A thousand-plus? It doesn't tell me -- just that we're over a thousand chatters.
Swifty Mcvay
2:49
I have asked many chats but I still have not found anybody who knows if the Padres control Kim for only the 4 years his contract is for or 2 additional years through Arbitration like any first year player. Steve any idea?
