He's a free agent at the end of the deal.
Verified that with a source at the time of signing.

how much does arrieta command? incentive based contract?
Steve Adams
2:51
Few million with buckets of incentives, yeah. It's been a rough couple seasons for him. I'd be surprised if he topped $5MM in guarantees and would think it's more in the $3-4MM range.

If I were to offer Rosenthal 3/27, does he sign?
Steve Adams
2:52
I think if the Astros were willing to offer that, yes, Rosenthal would've signed by now.
Dude was a minor league signee making like $2MM in base salary last year. I'm sure he'd love to get closer to Hendriks territory, but if someone came in at that rate it would be extremely hard to turn away.
Angels
2:52
Bauer back in the picture with Callaway perhaps gone?
Steve Adams
2:54
I don't know. I think the Callaway/Bauer rumors certainly had some legitimacy, but I also wonder whether they were ever seriously in on him with his asking price. If Callaway were the main deterrent and the Angels really wanted Bauer, I don't see why they'd keep Mickey over him. I feel the lack of interest is due more to money than anything else. They commit long-term to players, but they've never gone too wild on a pitcher's deal.
CJ Wilson (5 years, 77.5MM) is the longest I can think of in recent memory for the Halos. Perhaps  I'm blanking.

How is Solano a better 2B right now than Albies according to MLB Network's Shredder?
Steve Adams
2:55
Lol, I didn't see that but I handily disagree.

How did Kluber get $11M guaranteed?
Steve Adams
2:56
He was one of the three best pitchers in MLB from 2014-18, and his 2019 season was blown up by non-arm injuries. I thought he'd get more on a one-year deal when free agency opened. (Not much more -- just saying ... seems like a fine gamble to me)

I feel like JBJ is a bad fit for the NYM. Lefty bat. Crowded OF (without DH). Any I wrong?
Steve Adams
2:57
He's a better fit in Houston, I think.

They should have fired Callaway.
Steve Adams
2:58
I'd imagine that's the result here, but Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times made this point:

I fully expect Mickey Callaway to be fired as #Angels pitching coach, and probably very soon, but team needs to conduct investigation and go through proper employment channels/due process before making move. Remember, they were recently sued by a former clubhouse manager.

Are the Twins immediate AL favorites with a dark-horse deal with Bauer?
Steve Adams
2:59
I don't know if they're immediate AL favorites, but they'd be among the top few teams in the league and (assuming they bring Cruz back, too), I'd probably put them slightly ahead of the White Sox.

I think they *should* be all over the possibility, but I don't expect it to happen.

As a Mariner fan, should I be disappointed they didn’t really sign anyone or haven’t shown interest in competing this year, or should I believe in Dipoto’s plan and just consider this another development year?
Steve Adams
3:01
I thought their Flexen, Montero and Middleton additions were all fine low-cost moves. It sounds like ownership wasn't keen on spending too heavily, but I would bet they're an aggressive player in next year's market (along with the Giants)
Rob Manfred
3:01
Alright. I hired Theo Epstein. Ken Griffey, Jr. Is my job safe now?
Steve Adams
3:01
His job was always safe. The owners vote on whether Manfred stays or goes, and everything he does is in the interest of making them money. Revenues (2020 notwithstanding) have soared in recent years.
3:02
As far as Griffey goes, I thought it was cool and nostalgic, but if he's being tasked as some kind of youth baseball ambassador, that seems ... bizarre? As great as Griffey was, today's youth wasn't even born during his peak.
Angels
3:03
CJ Wilson got $77.5 million but Weaver got 5 years, $85 million.
Steve Adams
3:04
Ah yes, thanks for that. Either way, we're talking a good distance from where Bauer is looking to land.

Do the padres need one more backend starter as insurance? Maybe bet on a resurgence from Arietta or someone of that caliber?
Steve Adams
3:05
I would say any contender could use a cheap veteran or two to add to their current group. A lot of guys are going to be jumping from 50-60 innings in 2020 to 150+ in 2021. That's a lot to ask of an arm. Stock up on depth.
Gallo
3:05
You mentioned me as possible trade bait this season -- how much value do you think I've got around the league? I seem to be a pretty polarizing player, are there enough teams that would see me as valuable to get a reasonable haul of prospects for the Rangers?
Steve Adams
3:07
I think Gallo is more polarizing among fans who still care about batting average  and big strikeout totals than among teams. Front offices see a plus defender in the outfield corners with 80-grade power and a 14% walk rate. And he's controlled for two years with a $6.2MM salary in 2021. He has plenty of trade value

Why isn't the idea that only pitching 50-60 innings is saving arms rather than leading to more potential injuries?
Steve Adams
3:08
It's about the workload increase; sure, some of them are rested, but adding 120 innings to someone's workload (or really, adding 120 innings' worth of total pitches) is taxing

How does MLB respond to the association now.
Steve Adams
3:09
MLB is the one making all of the proposals. The union aren't giving them anything to respond to because they already have an agreement in place: the current collective bargaining agreement, which calls for a 162-game season.
Steven Adames
3:10
I think Bauer is closer to Wheeler than Cole. Just happened to have his best season in a 60 game contract year.
Steve Adams
3:11
I don't get the constant line of thinking that pretends 2018 just didn't exist.
And again, teams are paying Bauer for what they think he'll do over the next X number of years -- not based on what he's done in the past.
MLB
3:11
Didn't the last proposal by MLB include a slightly shortened season of 152 or so games at full pay? SO why do the players care if they get paid the same to play less?
Steve Adams
3:12
Because expanded playoffs is a mammoth win for ownership that would generate them hundreds of millions of dollars. The league's offer was basically: "How about we pay you what you're going to make with or without a deal, and you give up your top bargaining chip to us in exchange for a universal DH (which, by the way, is something we also really want).
