Nothing too exciting; a bargain reliever or rotation add maybe. The Hosmer signing isn't an indication that they're going to aggressively start adding pieces and trying to contend in 2018. They're still not expecting to compete in the division this year.

Who gets a deal first? Cobb od Lynn?
Steve Adams
3:49
Cobb has seemingly had more demand this winter

3:49
Are the Giants really any better, or just older?
Steve Adams
3:49
They're unequivocally better.
3:50
But, I don't think they're improved to the point where there an NL West contender
And I wouldn't put them down as any kind of Wild Card favorite, either. There are just way too many guys they need to rebound

Do the Rays trade Archer or no?
Steve Adams
3:51
I would be very surprised, but not wholly shocked .... which is probably more credence than I'd ever give to the possibility of him being moved. I don't see it, but someone could always overwhelm them.

What will the Yankee do about 3B?
Steve Adams
3:51
Go get 'em, Miguel Andujar
Brewers
3:51
Do we sign another staring arm or do we depend on wilkerson
Steve Adams
3:52
They'll add another arm. (And I don't think WIlkerson would be next in line among internal options anyhow)

Is Benoit the last move the nationals make before opening day?
Steve Adams
3:53
Still think they'll be exploring catching upgrades and fifth starters right up until the end of camp.
Bob
3:53
SF Giants, SIGN Lincecum ?
Steve Adams
3:53
Not if he actually has a guaranteed offer on the table from another club.

A’s as 2nd wild card contender?
Steve Adams
3:54
I like Oakland more than most, and maybe they can hang around the periphery of the race, but I think they're a long shot to be in serious contention for that come mid-September
Sabean
3:54
Am I done adding players
Steve Adams
3:54
Waiver claims of league-min guys and such could still be in play, but they're not going to sign anyone else, I don't think, nor will they acquire someone with remotely meaningful salary tied to them.

Should the Ray's have packed Odorizzi and Dickerson for a better return?
Steve Adams
3:56
I'm sure they looked at doing so over the course of the past several weeks.

The moves were surprising, but they were also very reflective of the fact that the general public and the players in the Rays clubhouse value Odo and Dickerson more than the other 29 teams in the league.

Odorizzi has a decent track record but had a terrible 2017 season. Dickerson is a defensively limited slugger who had a monster BABIP in the season's first half and then cratered with like a .270 OBP in the season's final three months.
3:57
I think he should still command some trade interest as a cheap bat that can be controlled for a couple of years, but I don't expect a huge return for him and it's possible that the Rays just cut him from his non-guaranteed arb deal. They'd owe him a sixth of salary (just under $1MM), and he'd be free to sign elsewhere.

Can I get Moose for 1/10 to fill in for Sano during the diet and suspension?  I don't care about the 3 rounder he'd cost.
Steve Adams
3:59
Don't see Moose taking that little even with the lack of an obvious market.

Twins are a reasonable pick as kind of a dark horse though. As you said, Sano could possibly be suspended, and even when he's back, they can rotate the two between third base and DH.

Problem there, to an extent, is the Twins are looking to get better against LHP, and Moose doesn't do much for them in that regard.

Why didn't Padres go after JD Martinez instead of Hosmer? Could have left Myers at 1st and JD is a much better bat than Hosmer... Hosmer's not great but gotta assume he's good enough to opt out after 5 years, making the age/length less relevant when comparing.
Steve Adams
4:01
Hosmer is considerably younger, the Padres fell in love with his personality and leadership, and Myers OF + Hoz 1B is a much better scenario than Myers 1B + JDM OF from a defensive standpoint

Cobb is only 30 and is a near lock to be a 2.5-3 win pitcher. I don't understand your comments about his asking price. You're arguing he should get less than what Ubaldo and Santana got 4 years ago.
Steve Adams
4:02
Cobb isn't a lock for anything. He's never made 30 starts in a season, never thrown 180 innings, and had the third-lowest swinging-strike rate of any starter in baseball last season
I wrote about it at greater length here:

Maybe do an article where you rank tea offseason in order from worst to best?
Steve Adams
4:04
Generally speaking, I find rankings of that nature to be impossible to do accurately. They're often just reactionary and rife with hot takes.

We usually include a poll allowing readers to "grade" the offseason of each team at the end of our Offseason Review posts, but that's about the closest we'll come.

Padres questions.  They are, afterall, the Padres.
Steve Adams
4:05
Yeah, they just signed the largest contract in franchise history and the biggest free-agent deal of the offseason. Why bother talking about them?
Heavy eye roll

Will I end up in Baltimore?
Steve Adams
4:07
Don't think so, but there aren't a lot of great suggestions. Might take an injury in spring to create a more obvious suitor. Nats on a one-year deal or Wieters-style deal might work, but his market is not good

HOW could DD go after JDM for $110m and not go after Stanton for almost nothing?
