Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/20/24

I'd take Anderson. The glove will be bad, but it's not like Rosario is peak Andrelton Simmons or anything himself, and the upside with Anderson's bat outweighs the upside of nearly any other plausible option at this point.

If the luxury tax penalties make one year of Snell impossible for the Yankees (paying $80M for a $40M contract), will signing Soto next offseason be an issue?
Steve Adams
1:29
The Yankees have $190MM of luxury obligations next year, and that doesn't include arb raises for Grisham, Cortes Trevino, Schmidt, Effross and Victor Gonzalez. Nor does it include replacements in the outfield, where Soto/Verdugo are free agents or in the bullpen, where Holmes, Loaisiga, Kahnle and Caleb Ferguson are free agents.
Put more succinctly: Yes
1:30
But it's also the Yankees and their funds teeter on limitless, so if they want Soto, Hal can make it happen

In your opinion, rank Bellinger, Snell, Montgomery and Chapman as to the likelihood of a one or two year deal at this point.
Steve Adams
1:30
Bellinger, Chapman, Montgomery, Snell
I don't think any of them sign a one-year deal
1:31
But the Correa style three years with two opt-outs is effectively a one-year deal from the player's standpoint, assuming they perform well.
Matt Chapman
1:32
Why have the Mariners not signed me yet? Seems like the most logical fit…or are they in talks with the Rays to acquire Paredes for Woo and sign Snell?
Steve Adams
1:32
Because their ownership doesn't want to/hasn't wanted to spend that kind of money this offseason. Mariners leadership made clear early in the winter that the payroll wouldn't be rising all that much.

80 wins for the Tigers possible?
Steve Adams
1:33
They won 78 last year and should be better this year, yeah
Blue Man Group
1:33
What do you think the Woodruff deal ends up looking like for the financials?
Steve Adams
1:34
I figured he'd sign for a total around $25MM over two, but since he's going back to MIL, I wouldn't be surprised to see he wound up taking less than that to stay where he wanted to be.
Free Agents
1:35
Strange off season as so many free agents still on market. Could big names be left as season starts?
Steve Adams
1:35
I don't think anyone wants that. I'm not expecting any of Bellinger, Snell, Monty or Chapman to be unsigned. Could like ... Zack Greinke or Johnny Cueto be? Sure.
Twins
1:36
Cody Bellinger to the Twins on a 3 year, $100m deal with two opt-outs. Assuming the Twins can subsequently move Kepler, who says no?
Steve Adams
1:37
Wrote about it a little in last week's look at short-term options for Bellinger, but the Royals (hey, stop laughing) are my favorite speculative Bellinger landing soft landing spot on a Correa-esque deal:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/cody-bellinger-rumors-short-ter...
If the Twins are going to spend $100MM+, I think they should just sign Montgomery
1:38
Or Snell, but I have a hard time believing Minnesota's going 160-200MM on Snell
Dodger blue
1:38
Are you surprised Ryu could not get just as good of a deal to stay in the MLB?
Steve Adams
1:39
Who's to say he didn't? He's in his late 30s now and might have just wanted to pitch closer to home.
1:40
Rays are signing Amed Rosario for one year, per Jeff Passan
The $1.5MM guarantee on that is shockingly low, even with as poor of a season as Rosario had in 2023.
1:41
At that price, why not? Really nice pickup for the Rays.

1:41
Are the Pirates going to sign a SP or pray that two of Contreras/Priester/Ortiz revert to form?
Steve Adams
1:41
Whether via trade or free agency, I think they get one more.
Joshua C.
1:41
Does Bieber make it to the trade deadline? His value can only go up, right?
Steve Adams
1:42
It can certainly go down. He can get hurt or lose another mile off his heater and be getting knocked around at like a 4.70 ERA with matching peripherals. I don't think his value is at any kind of low point -- it's just lowER than it was a couple years ago. He didn't look like the same guy in '23 that he was at his peak
Best Crepe of My Life

Who are the best relievers still available in free agency?  Are players who might get guaranteed deals?
Steve Adams
1:44
You can always find our free agent list here:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/2023-24-mlb-free-agents.html

Ryne Stanek is the best left, I'd say, and I think he should get a MLB deal, yeah. Brad Hand could maybe get a big league deal. Maybe some team wants to sign Syndergaard and put him in the 'pen.
Mike T
1:44
Will Mike Ford get a minor league contract with an invite to spring training?
Steve Adams
1:44
That's my expectation
Oz
1:45
Does Ahmed Rosario going to Tampa make Tim Anderson to Miami a near certainty?
Steve Adams
1:45
Wouldn't say near certainty, but it takes one more option away from the Fish
CincyJon
1:46
Reds doing anything else before season start, other than minor league/waiver/dfa's ? The need for RH OF is glaring.
Steve Adams
1:48
Krall said they're done with "major" moves back in early Jan:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/krall-reds-likely-done-with-maj...

That, to me, doesn't rule out a small deal for Robbie Grossman or Enrique Hernandez or whoever. But they could also look at waiver pickups and NRIs for that type of addition, as you said. I don't think it's "glaring" with Steer moving to LF full time, but I agree they could stand to upgrade over in-house options.
Scouting report on agents
1:50
What about Tim Anderson to the Giants? They need a shortstop
Steve Adams
1:51
Zaidi has spoken about wanting to improve the team's defense; I don't think Anderson really aligns with that, but if the price is low enough maybe they just shrug and take the upside with the bat.
