Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/2619

Some regression. Lot's of K's, very few walks, and I don't buy him as a guy who can sustain his fly-balls clearing the fences at a 20% clip. But, he's still a decent power/speed guy -- just will probably come with a dumpy average and questionable OBP.
Ronald Acuna
4:17
I've seen you say you're shocked how wide of a margin I beat Soto by multiple times. Your bias is showing. Acuna is clearly the all-around better baseball player. Defense and base running actually matter.
Steve Adams
4:17
What bias do you think I have, first off? Ha.
4:19
Secondly -- Soto's OBP was 40 points higher. He struck out 5% less often and walked 6% more often. On-base percentage also matters, and the two weren't really different baserunners unless in terms of overall value contributed unless you're looking only at raw SB totals. Acuna was a better defender with more power (a bit), but Soto did everything he did at a younger age and was an overall better hitter by both OPS+ and wRC+ (albeit by only a slight margin)
I think one of the two of us is showing more bias, particularly since all I said was, "It should've been closer," ha.

Didnt Trevor Bauer say he's going year to year for his whole career? He can set that barometer.
Steve Adams
4:21
Bauer is going year to year, he says. I think people will be surprised by what he gets on one-year deals in the open market if he's healthy, but it wouldn't be the same level of demand as a prime-aged position player, I don't think.
Still love the idea of Bauer going full mercenary just to see what happens, though. I hope he dominates his way to free agency.
Tom Tebow
4:21
Am I the most overhyped prospect of all time?   Will Inever reach the show?
Steve Adams
4:22
How can he be overhyped if you're not even calling him by the right name!

For a serious answer -- I don't think he can be an overhyped prospect because he's not a prospect.
Tebow is a freak athlete, but he's a 31-year-old who whiffed at a 35% clip in Double-A last year.
4:23
No one expects anything of him.
Realmuto
4:23
Should the Phillies lock up Realmuto if they fall short on Harper?
Steve Adams
4:23
I don't see why they wouldn't lock up Realmuto even if they do sign Harper. The two are unrelated in my mind.
Manny Machado
4:23
Hey Steve Adams it's Manny machado
Steve Adams
4:23
Sup Manny

I've never understood how someone can argue "It should have been closer". If you think one player deserved the award over the other than why should some percentage of voters vote for the less deserving player. I can understand "I thought it would be closer" more than "It should have been closer"
Steve Adams
4:25
I thought it would be closer -- I just typed "should have been" in my haste, but that's the general idea I was trying to convey. I'm surprised more people didn't vote for Soto since I thought it was more or less a coinflip between the two

More likely to end up in an Astros uniform this year Edwin Encarnacion or Marcus Stroman
Steve Adams
4:26
I don't find either especially likely

You would answer to "Hey Steve Adams it's Manny machado" and not my questions? It's hard to believe you when you say there are so many questions to answer and can't get to all of them.
Steve Adams
4:27
Yeah, I mean I've only gone like 40 minutes longer in this chat than I normally would -- heaven forbid I take 1.5 seconds to inject some levity. But hey, look, you got one answered. Congrats!

There are 1600 people in here right now, and no one's forcing you to be one, man.

Seems like there several contenders who could really use back end bullpen help, and badly. Can the Giants get a top 100 prospect for Will Smith right now?
Steve Adams
4:28
Feel like if that sort of offer was out there for one year of a reliever, they'd have jumped by now.

What are the Braves going to do with 10+ minor league arms ready for an extended shot at the show?
Steve Adams
4:30
I'd argue that they don't have 10+ arms of that caliber -- especially with Soroka already hurting. Some will rise to prominence and others will regress or be traded. I think Atlanta should've been (or should be) more active in improving, but it's not necessarily a bad thing to have so much desirable pitching.
Tulo
4:30
Why DFA him when albeit small they could have traded him for something with the amount of interest there was.  They could have attached the salary so that side would be a wash.
Steve Adams
4:31
Why do you assume they didn't spend considerable effort attempting to do just that?
Tyler Wade
4:32
What do I have to do?
Steve Adams
4:33
To stick on a big league roster? He didn't really even hit in Triple-A last year. At this point, he's not sniffing any kind of notable role with the Yankees without several injuries getting him there. He seems like someone who'll be traded.

Should we be mad if the GM can get Harper ?
Steve Adams
4:34
It's more up to their owner, John Middleton. It's more up to every team's owner than it is their GM or president of baseball ops. The GMs and presidents are surely advising and saying what they'd do/wouldn't do, but in the end, it's the owner who is negotiating with Boras and directly making the call.
4:35
So if they don't land Harper, and you want to be mad -- be mad at John Middleton. He's the one who uttered the phrase "stupid money" in the first place, after all... not Matt Klentak.

Jose a good signing?  2 WAR at least right
Steve Adams
4:37
Pretty stunned that Jose Iglesias and his glove had to take a minor league deal. I dig it for Cincinnati

Ok, I'm going to wrap up for the week. Thanks to all for chatting. Feel free to send me further vitriol on Twitter @Adams_Steve, haha. We'll do it again next week. Jeff's chat is Thursday at 2pm.

Take care and enjoy your week!
