For what it's worth, the A's thing is maybe the weirdest thing about that team.
3:19
A club with their level of payroll constraint should be trying to extend every young core player they can. It boggles my mind that the last pre-arb extensions for them were like...  Doolittle, Cahill, Kurt Suzuki.

They extended Khris Davis, but only two years and only once he was close to free agency. I don't get why they weren't ultra proactive in trying to sign Semien, Olson, Chapman, Manaea, etc. early in their careers.

I suppose the margin for error is thin with ownership's payroll restrictions, but that seems like a real good way for Oakland to be able to circumvent some of those financial shortcomings. Then again, maybe John Fisher just doesn't even want to risk being burned and stopped giving the green light on such efforts.

I find it hard to believe the front office group just decided in the mid-10s that "Nah, cheaply extending players isn't for us"

Chris Taylor to infield and Bryan Reynolds to outfield for Dodgers??
Steve Adams
3:22
I 100% think the Dodgers should be the team to overwhelm the Pirates for Reynolds. They're barely over the luxury barrier, which is kind of silly if they're not trying to duck back below and engineer any kind of a reset. They have tons of MLB-ready talent to entice Pittsburgh, and their CF mix right now is like.. Trayce Thompson, Josh Outman, Jason Heyward and Chris Taylor?

Reynolds isn't an amazing defensive CF, but he'd be the best all-around CF on that roster by a long shot, and all of the in-house options have huge question marks.

Which small/mid-market teams could be the next Padres that way outspends their market/expectations?
Steve Adams
3:24
Twins and Mariners both keep creeping up and are in the 140-150 range now. I don't think either's going to be spending $250MM+, but both teams are showing an increased appetite for spending, both have a reasonably young core they want to surround with talent, etc. Could see some remaining room for those numbers to increase.

Dodgers blow the Brewers away with a trade offer for Adames and Burnes. We throw in Yelich. Both sides are happy

The only thing I agree with here is the username "Not going to happen"
Taylor
3:25
Why do Brewers fans want to get rid of Adames so bad?
Steve Adams
3:26
Don't think anyone wants to get rid of him, but they recognize/expect that with two years of control remaining he's not likely to sign an extension and his trade value is at its peak.
1st Adell question
3:26
Me for Kim. Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:26
Ha, the Adell questions have died down a lot in recent weeks/months. Padres don't do that though.

Do you think teams .moving players out of their natural positions to cover holes indicates that there are not enough quality major leaguers to go around for 30 teams? Won't expansion dilute the talent even further?
Steve Adams
3:28
I think it speaks to the increased athleticism we see in so many of today's players and to the fact that teams recognize the value in having multiple guys being capable of playing multiple spots. I think there's more than enough talent in the sport to support 32 (or more) teams.

Assuming the Pirates hold on to Reynolds through the Summer, could they be the 2022 Os?
Steve Adams
3:29
Baltimore had a pair of No. 1 overall prospects in the sport debut in the same season (which sounds impossible) in Adley and Henderson. I don't think the Bucs can match that feat, nor do I think they'll go on an Orioles-esque run -- at least not this year.
But I do like their long-term outlook (again, as with the Reds, assuming ownership eventually offers SOME financial support)

Pirates send Choi and Brubaker to the Twins for Krilloff

Am I wrong or is our rotation very fragile?
Steve Adams
3:31
Yeah, there's a good bit of injury risk with Rodon/Severino and now with Montas out. They have some depth, but I've harped in the past how I think the Yankees should stockpile more rotation depth. I feel like I'm always wary of their rotation beyond the projected top six or so, this time of year.
Cole-Rodon is the best one-two punch they've had in awhile though

Is Busch more likely to see more time in LA with Lux being out? I see so many other names associated with playing time and not his. SImply curious.
Steve Adams
3:33
He's kind of a positionless, bat-first prospect. But second base is a key spot he could get a look, so sure, thinning out the infield depth makes that more likely. With a healthy Lux, you might see Rojas or Taylor get the first look at 2B in the event Vargas struggles or gets hurt. Now you've got Rojas at SS already, so an additional injury/injuries certainly opens the door more for Busch at 2B
