Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/8/22

Astros?
2:26
Why isn't Cristian Javier considered a lock for the Astros' rotation? Seems he'd be a Nos. 2-3 on the majority of staffs.
Steve Adams
2:28
Just speaks to the depth they have. He's just not going to be locked into a spot over any of Verlander, McCullers, Framber, Garcia or Urquidy. That said, they're going to manage workloads, deal with injuries, etc. He may not be assured a starting job but I'd predict him to make more than the nine starts he did in 2021 and surpass last season's 101 1/3 innings.

Who do you like better, both short term and long term...Brady Singer or Casey Mize?

Rangers with the new signatures could go to the postseason.
Steve Adams
2:29
Still a whole lot of work that needs to be done on the pitching staff, and they have questions in the OF and at catcher. They're improved -- quite a bit -- but not a playoff club right now.
2:30
Still lots of offseason left though, so let's see what Daniels and Young have up their sleeves yet.

What kind of year does Eduardo Rodriguez have in Detroit?
Steve Adams
2:31
He was so much better than his ERA in 2021. He's a pretty steady mid/upper-3.00s ERA, bulk innings type. I'd put him at 180-190 innings of something like 3.60-3.75 ERA ball. I liked that signing

If the Brewers call the Nats on Josh Bell, what do you think the price might be? I think he's a good fit for the Brew Crew lineup.
Steve Adams
2:34
Pretty light. Bell has one year of control left, he's not super cheap, and the 1B market has plenty of alternatives. The Nats gave up a big league-ready fifth starter/swingman (Wil Crowe) and a high-upside but very low-level lotto ticket (Eddy Yean) for two years of Bell. It should cost a good bit less than that for one year of him, even if he bounced back following a slow 2021 start.
Couple mid-level prospects from what's not a great Brewers system anyway.
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
2:35
My O's in the postseason in '23...who says no? Lots of young talent about to lead the Orioles into the future.
Steve Adams
2:37
They're on the upswing, but the majority of the prospects they're counting on haven't reached the Majors yet, and you can't expect everyone to just figure it out from the jump. Also, the AL East is stacked and full of teams who'll be aggressive.

This is one of the reasons I'm more down on the Orioles' rebuild in general than I am on others. The Astros did this in the AL West and the Cubs in the NL Central ... the "burn it all down and tank till you can't tank anymore" strategy.

But once they were ready to pull up and push for contending, they did so knowing they had more spending capacity than their division rivals and that at least a couple clubs in their divisions would probably be on the competitive downswing.

There's never much of a competitive downswing for the Yankees/Red Sox, and the Rays/Jays are both built for the long haul right now.
2:38
Basically, there's a lower margin for error in the Baltimore rebuild because the teams they're trying to overcome are just better or more dangerous than the ones that the 'Stros, Cubs, and others have tried to leapfrog.

I can't buy '23 for the Orioles. 2024 seems safer, but they need a lot to go right.
Justin Upton $12 million?
2:38
Justin Upton only makes "like $12 million?" I thought he has a really bloated salary and was making closer to $30 million?
Steve Adams
2:39
Should've said $12MM more than Kimbrel, oops.
I believe he's at 28MM next season -- Kimbrel at 16

Hey Future Bright. The Os are stacked in young talent only problem is none of it is pitching!!
Steve Adams
2:40
Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall coming -- Kyle Bradish, to a lesser extent. But yeah, they'll need some arms to exceed development expectations

Knowing the Phillies need for outfielders how about they take Will Myers contract which the Padres are desperately trying to get rid of throwing Mackenzie Gore in I know Myers makes a good amount what do you think it would cost them also
Steve Adams
2:41
I don't think the Padres would give up Gore just to get rid of one year of Myers' contract.
Gore's stock is down pretty substantially, but still.
In general, we see fewer teams give up prospects to ditch bad contracts than we see proposals to do so. And when those trades do happen, it's not really the big-name prospects that fans would hope to see.

What do you think the odds are that Ozuna is in the opening day lineup for the Braves?
Steve Adams
2:42
Brian Snitker more or less said last week that he expects him to be there.

Brain Reynolds for Max Meyer, Eury Perez, J.J. Bleday and Competitive Balance pick for this year, who says no?
Steve Adams
2:43
Marlins aren't giving up that much of the top end of their system. (Also the pick would have to be moved in a separate deal since Comp Balance picks, I believe, are only tradeable in-season)
BlueJay

I'll try this question again in this week's chat. Does Moreno make the Jays team out of Spring Training and if yes is he a catcher or other position?
Steve Adams
2:44
Gabriel Moreno only has three games in AAA, and the Jays have several other catchers on the roster. Even if he'd dominated in a full AAA season last year and the Jays had a blatant hole at catcher, would they bring him up on Opening Day? They held Vlad down to get the extra year of control.

Biggest MLB ballpark on your bucket list to visit?
Steve Adams
2:45
I've been to about half the parks but still not PNC. That's probably top of my list. All you ever hear is how beautiful the park is -- which makes it all the more of a shame that the Bucs have rarely given fans a reason to go out over the past decade.
AJ Preller
2:46
Doesn't a Kimbrel for Myers trade make the most sense for both teams?
Steve Adams
2:47
The money lines up better than Upton/Kimbrel, but Kimbrel was back to elite form early in '21. I think more teams would bet on him recapturing that than on Myers getting back to his 2013 or 2016 form.
Plus Kimbrel's still 4-5MM cheaper

Breakout year for Daulton Varsho?
Steve Adams
2:51
I like Varsho! The novelty of a combo center fielder/catcher is outstanding on its own, but he makes hard contact at a respectable clip, the K's aren't out of control, he can draw a walk, etc. I don't know that he's a superstar in the making, but a lot of people outside Arizona don't even have a clue who he is... I believe he'll cement himself as a big league regular this year.
Rick Porcello
2:51
Did he retire officially or is he a potential backend rotation guy worth taking a flyer on ?
Steve Adams
2:51
He hasn't officially retired, but if he were looking to play, he'd have signed last year and/or we'd have heard about him earlier in the offseason.
