Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/9/21

Doubt it, but he probably wants/thinks three is plausible, so it's not a shock that he went out starting at one year higher. I think he'll end up back in L.A. on a two-year deal -- maybe three years but in the LeMahieu/Yankees style
(That is, two-year money spread out over three years to lower the luxury hit)

so definitely no DH this year?
Steve Adams
2:36
The league can keep proposing scenarios to the MLBPA

2:37
Is $6.5 million for Archer high for TB?
Steve Adams
2:38
It's more than I thought he'd get -- especially for the Rays. I have to wonder a little if the Rays (and other clubs, for that matter) were a little surprised at how strong the market for one-year SPs was. I would not have pegged them to give 6.5 to a pitcher on the mend from TOS
Melancon or Greene?
2:38
Which reliever is better?
Steve Adams
2:39
Neither really excites me, but at least Melancon has one bankable skill in that huge GB%

2:39
Any chance Marlins sign a reliever such as Trevor Rosenthal? Or maybe a vet like Clippard?
Steve Adams
2:40
Marlins aren't going to spend at Rosenthal levels either, no way. Clippard seems plausible if the Twins don't make him a decent offer to return.
2:41
Sounds like Duvall probably will end up with the Marlins. One minute -- going to get a quick headline and sentence or two up on that.
Marc Melancon
2:44
Why not too much news on me?
Steve Adams
2:45
36-year-old reliever with a well below-average strikeout rate. He ought to get a big league deal, but I'd imagine it'll be for one year and at a price that makes people say "Wow, great deal." There'll probably be a lot of those for third-tier right-handed relievers like Melancon in the next week or two
Captain What's His Name

Who starts at 3rd base for the Brewers on opening day?
Steve Adams
2:46
Luis Urias would be my current pick, but it's the Brewers, and they sign a bunch of late one-year deals every winter. Could see them grab a Jake Lamb or something still if they like the price.
Catalina Cub
2:46
Dustin May to Cubs for Kris Bryant. Who says no?
Steve Adams
2:46
Kris Bryant isn't bringing back a big league starter with 5-6 years of control.
2:47
A Bryant trade seems likelier to resemble the Yu Darvish deal -- salary relief and a bunch of low-level lotto tickets.

7 inning double headers and runner on second to begin extra's are not real baseball to me. Is this the last season we see this non sense?????
Steve Adams
2:50
Depends on how the CBA talks go. I don't like the runner on base in extras, either, but the whole "This isn't baseball" argument is a reach. The rules change almost every year. Baseball in 2020 doesn't even look like baseball did in 2010. Sports are always going to be changing; the core of the game remains the same, and I'd rather appreciate that than spend all my time dwelling on the changes around the margins.
Astros OF Situation
2:50
Is Tucker capable to playing CF well enough to be an everyday CF?  And if so, would Naquin or Mazara be a good fit for RF for the Astros
Steve Adams
2:52
They're better off putting Tucker in a corner and signing JBJ or Marisnick. Outside of Mazara's age, there's nothing really appealing there. Naquin is a respectable platoon option, but he's been hampered by injuries and the upside is quite limited. I'd rather have the floor provided by a strong defensive CF who might be able to hit a little bit.

Money in sports is crazy do you see in the future ball players getting 40 to 60 million a year to play a game
Steve Adams
2:54
"Play a game" is just a way to downplay what it is they do; they're supremely gifted athletes and performers in the entertainment industry. People pay hundreds and thousands of dollars a year to watch them.

The way MLB revenues have skyrocketed in recent years, why is $40MM+ per year outrageous? We're more than 20 years removed from A-Rod signing at $25MM per season. Player salaries have not escalated at a remotely proportionate level to the league's revenues.

2:55
Who's the best bench player left on the market?
Steve Adams
2:55
I guess it depends what you're looking for. Infield I'd say Jedd Gyorko or Brad Miller. Probably Marisnick in the OF.

2:55
Which rookie infielder who had an underwhelming 2020 is most likely to have a better 2021: Lux or Kieboom?
Steve Adams
2:56
I'm bigger on Lux than on Kieboom.
Ross Atkins
2:56
You got me getting one of the big 3 SP FA ( Pax, Odo, Walker) or a 1 year flyer on a lesser name (Porcello, Samardzija, Hill, Arrieta)
Steve Adams
2:56
Can I split the difference and guess they take a 1-year flier on James Paxton?
Petit
2:57
Return to the A’s on a 1 year deal?
Steve Adams
2:57
I can definitely see that -- especially now that they unexpectedly have some cash from the Davis swap

Hanser Alberto crack the 25-man?
Steve Adams
2:57
26-man!
2:58
And yeah my guess is that he does -- at least as a platoon option for Lopez at 2B.

I think Lopez should be in AAA anyhow, but Moore keeps talking about him like a current big leaguer because they love the glove. Hard to blame them there, but he hasn't hit a lick in the big leagues yet.

What is the luxury tax and what does it do?
Steve Adams

It's a slap on the wrist for exceeding an arbitrary payroll threshold ($210MM worth of collective average annual salary on a roster in 2021).

First-time offenders pay 20% in overages for the first $20MM by which they exceed, plus another 12% for the next $20MM and a 42.5% for anything thereafter.

Second-time offenders pay 30 percent for that first tier. Third-timers pay 50 percent.

Exceeding by more than $40MM knocks your top pick back 10 spots in the draft.
3:01
All things considered, it's an extremely light penalty that owners like to use as leverage in talks with agents. That they've managed to sell so many fans on the notion that it's an actual deterrent is nuts to me. The Dodgers are going to pay like $7MM in overages after signing Bauer. For a team with pockets that deep ... big deal.

Pirates sign James Paxton. Eh?
Steve Adams
3:02
Paxton wants $12MM per year. The Pirates' entire payroll might not be $12MM in 2021.
