Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/9/21

Steve Adams
3:03
(I kid -- the minimum is $14.69MM -- but I also see no way the Bucs give that out)
Well -- he wants $12MM for 2021. One-year deal. Point remains.
Mike
3:04
I want $12 million too.  What makes Paxton think he will get it?
Steve Adams
3:04
Corey Kluber and Drew Smyly getting $11MM apiece for a combined 27 innings of work in 2020 probably doesn't help. Also, him being one of the 20-30 best pitchers in the game when healthy.
Who knows?
3:04
Do you see the Rangers adding another pitcher?
Steve Adams
3:06
Gibson, Lyles, Arihara, Dunning, Folty, Allard, Cody, Cotton ... they have some rotation depth there already -- enough that I don't think they'll spend much to add someone. Then again, I didn't think they'd even bring in a Folty type.

I could see them adding a reliever more than another SP.

Is Eduardo Rodriguez going to have a normal workload this season?
Steve Adams
3:07
I doubt almost any starter will have a "normal" workload in 2021 after they all maxed out around 60-80 innings last year. E-Rod, in particular, will be on a shorter leash though after missing the year due to Covid and myocarditis.
Frankie Who?
3:08
Is it unreasonable to think the Indians can win the central?  LaRussa has not coached in years and the Twins have a shakey line-up....I know its a long shot...but can you tell me there is a chance??
Steve Adams
3:09
I don't know many people who describe the Twins' lineup as "shaky" -- especially with Cruz back in the fold. It's not as good as it was in 2019, but it's solid and it's deep.

Sure Cleveland has a chance, but they're behind both the Twins and White Sox pretty comfortably for me. Their lineup is extremely topheavy.

What kind of contract do you think Rosenthal ends up with?
Steve Adams
3:11
Two years at 7-8MM per? I liked him at three early in the winter but it's tougher to envision now that camp is a week away. Boras has gotten has share of impressive late deals, though, so I won't rule it out.

How many Free Agents left do you think get more than 1 year? I got Turner, Walker, Rosenthal and Odorizzi
Steve Adams
3:13
I'll add JBJ to that. Maybe Justin Wilson. Melancon perhaps. And a two-year deal for Ken Giles wouldn't shock me -- one of those backloaded deals that pays him to rehab the TJ surgery in '21 and pitch at the back end in '22 (something like 2/6)

why do you hate cub fans
Steve Adams
3:15
If I hated Cub fans I wouldn't have much of a relationship with my dad or the bulk of his side of the family (Joliet natives). Just a whole lot of bad trade proposals from them today (e.g. Gleyber+Clarke Schmidt for one year of Javy Baez). Suppose I could ignore them all, but when lots of people are asking about the same players/combinations, I'll try to take one or two even if they're outlandish.
Mike
3:16
I have Paxton getting 3 year 48 million
Steve Adams
3:16
Scott Boras has entered the chat.

Is Andrew Vaughn really going to be the White Sox DH at the beginning of this season?
Steve Adams
3:16
I doubt it, but I could see midseason if he rakes through the upper minors
David Stearns
3:16
What do I have to do to get Odorizzi to come home to the Brewers instead of going to St. Louis?  3-year, $40 million?
Steve Adams
3:17
I think 3/40 would be a very competitive offer for Odorizzi -- if not a winning bid. But I don't think the Brewers would give it out, either.

why would the Angels trade for Alex Cobb instead of just signing a guy like R.Porcello?  Im kinda confused by the trade.
Steve Adams
3:18
I emailed Tim Dierkes, Connor Byrne and Jeff Todd from MLBTR right after that trade asking basically the same thing. I don't understand it from any vantage point.
We all agreed, by the way. It seems bizarre. Obviously the Angels see something.

3:19
how do you rank the best 5 relievers available?
Steve Adams
3:22
This is off the cuff so I might tweak it with more thought, but:

Trevor Rosenthal, Tyler Clippard, Justin Wilson, Mark Melancon, Yusmeiro Petit?

Honestly, after Rosenthal it's a pretty tightly bunched group. You could argue for any of Shane Greene, Sergio Romo, Brandon Workman or a bunch of other guys and I wouldn't put up a huge fight. Most of the relievers left have some discernible flaw, a mixed track record, etc.

Any truth to the osuna to the angels rumors?
Steve Adams
3:23
From Jeff Fletcher (Orange County Register):

Checked this out last night.

The response I got:  “No chance.”
3:24
I would trust Fletcher on that matter much more than the actual source of the rumor
Angels
3:24
Play keep or trade Adell or Marsh?
Steve Adams
3:25
Keep 'em both. Give them some run in AAA. Call one or both up and reduce Fowler's role midseason.
Howard K Stern
3:25
Matt Olson and Jesus Luzardo for Heliot Ramos and Joey Bart. Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:25
A's
Wade WIlson
3:26
Are you a supporter of DH in the NL?
Steve Adams
3:27
I am, but I grew up watching AL baseball in Minnesota and think watching pitchers hit is boring.
Rookie GM
3:27
I dont get it. Why are angels Fans always looking to get rid of Adell? Not really a fan favorite it would seem.
Steve Adams
3:28
I think they expected him to be Mike Trout but also forgot that Mike Trout batted .220/.281/.390 in 40 games during his own debut season.

Dick Allen belongs in the HOF.
