Suarez isn't an "early" extension candidate. He's at 4+ years of service, the same service class where Mitch Keller and Pablo Lopez got $70MM+. I don't know that Suarez has that type of earning power, but he's already locked in at $5.05MM this year, probably will make $8-9MMish in 2025 and can very reasonably look for $15MM+ annually in free agency ahead of his age-30 season. "Early" extension window for Suarez has passed.

Chances Braves extend fried?
Steve Adams
1:27
Fried's going to want to top Rodon, which isn't a price range the Braves have tended to go in their extensions. Most of their deals are $22MM annually and under, and they all begin much earlier in the player's career than Fried. I think he'll join Dansby and Freddie as longtime Braves to hit the market and probably sign elsewhere.

So does Davis have a real grievance chance or no?
Steve Adams
1:28
On the surface, I'd say there's a reasonable case, but there's not much precedent for a player filing and winning like this

Who will close for the Tigers Alex Lange or someone else ?
Steve Adams
1:29
I assume it's Lange's job to lose to begin the season, with Foley up next.

What is really going on with free agents? Why haven't the pirates snapped up Lorenzen and other tier 2 guys?
Steve Adams
1:30
Presumably because Pirates ownership isn't green-lighting a two-year deal for Lorenzen and/or because Ben Cherington doesn't feel he's worth that investment, relative to the Pirates' margin for error on such deals (which is much smaller than that of the standard team, given ownership's payroll limitations)

Blue Jays sign J.D. Davis to platoon at third/DH with Justin Turner. Move IKF to super-utility. Trade Espinal. What say you?
Steve Adams
1:32
They're both right-handed so a platoon wouldn't really work, but if the Jays want to sign Davis as an upgrade over Espinal, yeah that works. IKF is better suited as a utility guy anyhow

Frivolous question: which current MLB player do you think is the most likely to play in the 2040's?
Steve Adams
1:33
Does Jackson Holliday count as "current," or no since he's not yet debuted?
1:34
I'd say Gunnar Henderson and Julio Rodriguez. Jordan Walker was only 20 last season, but I'm less sold on his longevity with there already being early questions about his defensive aptitude.

Do teams consider their fielders' abilities when acquiring pitchers?  I feel like Snell is a better fit for the Red Sox than Montgomery because of their infield defense and Monty's groundball tendencies (other things being equal).
Steve Adams
1:36
Of course they do, but I don't really see the parallel you're describing here. Snell had a higher ground-ball rate than Montgomery last year, and Monty's basically is basically an average GB rate over the past few years.
Boras 2
1:36
Smart money is on Giants and Yankees to get Montgomery and Snell, yeah?
Steve Adams
1:36
Giants should sign one of them. I've repeatedly said I don't think the Yankees will sign either.
1:37
SHOULD they? Sure -- it's not my money. But will they spend $60MM+ on a year of Snell and punt a draft pick/$1MM of international bonus space? I doubt that.

I know the PR risks but the Yankees have a history of giving players second chances (Strawberry, Gooden, Howe ect). Fans only care if the player produces or not, why don't the Yankees just sign Bauer for league min like he wants. Won't have to give up prospects, pay all the tax money Snell or Monty would require. If he does bad or PR is too much of a nightmare they release him. Again, Yankee fans only care about winning and what the player does on the field.
Steve Adams
1:39
This reads a lot like "I don't care if they sign Bauer, so they should do it."

Lots of fans feel differently. And Bauer has been out there campaigning to be signed for league minimum with no takers.

Good a time as any for my weekly refrain: I will be shocked if a team signs him.
SD outfield
1:39
Is Jackson Merrill the starting CF opening day? What is the outfield besides Tatis?
Steve Adams
1:40
Yeah I feel like he'll be in there. Merrill, Tatis and then either Profar or an Adam Duvall type.

1:40
Will the Twins give in on budgeting and pursue one of Snell or Montgomery while they're still on the market?
Steve Adams
1:42
They should, but again, it's not my money so it's easy for me to say. I'd take a surprise, out-of-the-blue team like the Twins, Royals, etc. signing Snell/Monty over the Yankees paying the mammoth taxes to do it, at this point.

More realistically, some combination of Giants/Angels/Red Sox feels reasonable.

I have both Torkelson and Casas in dynasty, and im rebuilding, so i dont need to trade one now, but i would if i got the right return. Who would you hold onto, and would you wait and see what each guy does in year 3?
Steve Adams

Better long-term bat?

Spencer Torkelson (46% | 196 votes)

Triston Casas (54% | 230 votes)

Why don't the Guardians move Gimenez to SS?  Also, DeLauter and Manzardo are two of the best 26 players in the organization...will either break camp?
Steve Adams
1:47
My assumption was always that Gimenez would move to SS when Rosario left, so I'm moderately surprised they're not doing it. Perhaps it's a simple matter of him being SO good at 2B they don't want to mess with it, but it's weird to me. Rocchio might end up being great there but I'd make the Gimenez move now and let the other guys duke it out for 2B. Then again, I'm sitting in my living room chatting with you guys and not running a team, so I am dumb.

Manzardo has a better chance than DeLauter to make the roster. DeLauter's hitting well in spring ... he also has exactly six games above A-ball in the minors.
Lorenzen
1:47
Do I get a 2 year deal now with so many pitching injuries?
Steve Adams
1:48
I'm surprised he hasn't already, but perhaps earlier in the winter he was looking for three and it wasn't there, and now he's stuck trying to scrounge up two. Not sure. Lorenzen isn't super exciting, but in a world where Jordan Lyles, Drew Smyly, Trevor Williams etc. get two years, he should.
1:49
FWIW, I take Torkelson on that Tork v. Casas long-term outlook
I just don't like to give my opinion right away and then poll people. I'll usually let the crowd speak and then weigh in.
Particularly for fantasy purposes, Tork seems less likely to end up being platooned. And I just think he'll end up a better hitter -- not a knock on Casas so much as me just really liking Tork.

How does Holliday compare to Vlad when he was a prospect?
Steve Adams
1:51
They're pretty different, just skill-wise. Both were elite prospects, but Vlad was always an elite power bat without much going for him in terms of speed and defense. Holliday is more well-rounded but without Vlad's 70 hit tool and 80 power

I watched you say you'd pick Tork, and immediately Casas went up by 7 or 8 votes.

I also just said I'm dumb, so that tracks
CBA
1:52
After one honeymoon year with super long term deals for the second class of FAs now we get this year. Should we assume this is the new normal until 2028?
Steve Adams
1:54
I think it's just a reminder that every offseason comes with its own unique circumstances and market context. We've seen weirdly quiet offseasons before and we will again. There'll inevitably be a year where a bunch of teams -- Yankees, Dodgers, etc. -- are all trying to duck back under the tax line simultaneously, I'm sure. That'll create its own issues. You've got the TV situations throughout the league this year. Before long we'll be creeping up on a new CBA, etc. I just don't think we should ever expect the same market context in consecutive offseasons (even though we at MLBTR admittedly did, to a fault, with some of our FA predictions)
