Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/13/18

Steve Adams
3:30
I think that has as much to do with the fact that he's kind of a bigger guy who slowed down coming off a serious knee injury and has a career .305 OBP as it does with his QO.
Probably more to do with the knee and OBP
Frank Reagan

What "contending team" will become a "rebuilding team" at the trade deadline?
Steve Adams
3:32
Orioles, Rangers, Blue Jays -- several teams that're aiming to contend right now but may very well consider at least a short-term reload this summer.

Which of the baby bombers (Bellinger, Judge, Olson, Hoskins & Davidson) are the real deal - and which one(s) will bomb out into oblivion??
Steve Adams
3:33
Matt Davidson doesn't belong in that group. Bellinger and Judge are a tier ahead of Olson and Hoskins, but I think all four of them have a nice big league future.

3:33
Surprise team of 2018?
Steve Adams
3:33
I don't know that "surprise" necessarily = playoffs, but I've been saying I think the A's are better than most people realize, and adding Lucroy over Maxwell probably helps that cause along even more. Today's Jharel Cotton MRI doesn't do them any favors, though.

What are the chances Cobb and/or Holland to unsigned until June?
Steve Adams
3:34
I think they'll both sign by Opening Day
Paul G.
3:34
Since Moutakas resigned with the team that gave him the QO, does that count as his only QO going forward?
Steve Adams
3:34
Yep
One QO per career.
(Under the new CBA. Some guys -- Ervin Santana comes to mind -- received two under the previous one)

Today fans have been conditioned to believe that tanking is the only way to rebuild. I believe at least two or three of the current crop of tanking teams will not end up with an improved team and will end up in a worse situation than where they started. What teams do you think could end up like this?
Steve Adams
3:38
Yeah. The mass rebuilding just isn't going to work. It's generally easier for a team like the Cubs, who have massively deep financial pockets, to supplement the farm they build than for other clubs with lower payrolls.

The Reds are already in danger of their rebuilding efforts kind of stagnating, thanks in part to some injuries among the young pitchers they've stockpiled. I question whether the Marlins will ultimately spend enough to supplement their team, and I think they already got off to a rough start with so-so returns on Stanton and Ozuna.

But, the whole "tanking" term is generally overused as well. I'd bet a lot of fans are under the impression that the Rays and Pirates are tanking, for instance, when it's clearly not the case.

Should I sign Greg Holland as we do not have a true closer on team.
Steve Adams
3:40
Blake Parker was better than Holland in 2017, and healthy Cam Bedrosian (2016) was as well. If the price is right, sure, but the whole "proven closer" thing has been a fallacy since it was coined, and it's an archaic term at this point.

If Holland will take like 1/7 though -- sure. Go nuts.

Do you think Adam Jones stays in Baltimore especially if there’s somewhat of a rebuild?
Steve Adams
3:42
I doubt he'll want to if they're rebuilding. He seems like the kind of guy who is going to be hugely devalued in the current economic/analytic landscape of MLB though. Questionable OBP, rapidly declining ratings in CF. I bet a lot of teams are going to look at him as a fungible corner OF piece, and if he and his agents hit the market looking for a premium deal, I'd wager right now that they'll be sorely disappointed.
3:43
Doesn't help that 2019 is his age-33 season.
Buddy
3:43
To your point, the Giants have won three titles over the last eight years without any sort of "tanking" strategy.
Steve Adams
3:43
I wonder how far off they are from going that route, though. They should've been listed as one of the contenders that could go that route when I answered that question a few minutes back.

3:43
Do you see Joey Votto being traded at the deadline in July?
Steve Adams
3:44
Full no trade clause. Has said multiple times he never wants to leave Cincinnati.
Nope
Domingo
3:44
I'm traded for an arm by opening day...right?
Steve Adams
3:45
Doubt it. If they rotate Santana, Yelich, Cain, Braun and Thames on a 1B/OF carousel, there's an easy 400-600 PA per player and a pretty enviable amount of depth. Not a bad thing.
Tim Dierkes
3:45
if the Nats are serious contenders, do they move Robles for top of the line SP?
Steve Adams
3:45
They're already serious contenders.
And they're already not trading him for their biggest need -- catching help
3:46
So I doubt it.
If Robles is off the table for someone like JT Realmuto, I don't see how he'd be on the table for a high-priced rotation piece unless they've recently lost Scherzer and Strasburg to injury or something.
ROX
3:46
do the Rox trade Tapia or Dahl?
Steve Adams
3:47
Maybe this summer if they're in the race and have a clear need elsewhere, but I think they're pretty comfortable just carrying the depth right now even with CarGo back on board.
Matt Damon
3:48
Are you pro expansion or contraction?
Steve Adams
3:48
Would rather see more teams than fewer teams.
Alex
3:49
Which team in AL West has the weakest pitching staff?
Steve Adams
3:49
I have a very hard time seeing the Rangers field a decent staff this year with the collection of spare parts they've compiled.
Jason
3:51
Between Stephenson, Mahle, Garrett and Lorenzen (I'm assuming Romano has a spot locked up with Desclafani's injury), who do you see earning a rotation spot for the Reds?
