Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/13/18

I like Mahle's immediate future the best of that bunch, with Lorenzen heading back to a multi-inning relief role that seems to suit him nicely. Garrett and Stephenson still have options remaining
Alex Cobb
3:52
Should I have accepted the qualifying offer?
Steve Adams
3:54
No. But you should've taken the 3/42 or the 4/48 that were reportedly offered. The entire notion of him being worth a Mike Leake deal or more was utter insanity from the get-go.

3/42 seemed like a fair offer at the time, and 4/48 would've been a precedent for a pitcher with such little durability on his track record. His agents dramatically overvalued him, as far as I'm concerned. Looking 5 years for a guy who's never made 30 starts, never thrown 180 innings (Majors, minors or combined) and had the third-worst swinging-strike rate in MLB last year is baffling.
3:55
But, the very presence of those offers shows he was at leas correct to say no to the QO
Mike Moustakas

Am I the poster boy of the worst circumstances in the history of free agency?
Steve Adams
3:56
Outcome isn't really any different than it was for Ian Desmond or Nelson Cruz.

Can tyler lyons make starts for the cards this year?
Steve Adams
3:56
He was so good in the 'pen last year. Leave him there.

Is it conceivable if the jays are out of it we could see JD, Estrada, Happ, and Jaime traded at the deadline. This team seems like it's built for a massive firesale this year
Steve Adams
3:59
It's definitely conceivable. But they could probably get a decent crop of young talent for that group (plus maybe move some smaller pieces like Oh, Pearce, etc.) and have plenty of money to reinvest next offseason. They already have a really good farm anyhow, so I don't think they're looking at a massive three-year rebuild or anything.

Do the royals move salvy at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:59
Don't see them moving Salvy in July, next winter, or anytime.
Dan

Do you see Justin Upton repeating last years totals with a full year in LAA?
Steve Adams
4:00
I see him as a .250-.260 hitter with a .340-.350 OBP, 30+ homers, solid defense in LF and above-average baserunning value
Just some guy

Do you ever get tired of people pretending to be a ballplayer or GM and asking "will I" do this or that?
Steve Adams
4:01
Doesn't bother me, nope
Buddy
4:01
I actually think the Jays will bounce back and contend for a WC. What say you?
Steve Adams
4:01
Definitely possible.

Why isn't Amir Garrett getting more consideration for the Reds' rotation? He's been lights-out this spring, with renewed velocity, but seems to be behind even Michael Lorenzen on the SP depth chart. What gives?
Steve Adams
4:02
Dick Williams has spoken about how it's unfortunate that some guys (naming Garrett specifically, I believe) had to be rushed to the Majors in '17 due to injury. Maybe they just want a healthy Garrett to get some reps in AAA and ease into a big league role. They're still big on his future.

Di I earn a spot on the Giants roster?
Steve Adams
4:03
Probably not for Opening Day but sometime late spring or early summer.
KH
4:04
I know, in-division and between real deal rivals. But, who says no here. Dalton Pompey for Blake Swihart.
Steve Adams
4:05
Feel like Swihart has more value given his ability to catch and with Pompey barely playing the past two seasons. I know he's had his own injury issues, but Pompey's strike me as more serious, and he was never as well regarded as Swihart. I bet the Jays would make that trade, but doubt the Red Sox would.

When does Brinson become a regular in the Brewers lineup?
Steve Adams
4:06
Never? They traded him to the Marlins.

If you meant Marlins though, he'll be getting regular ABs this summer I bet.

Do you think the Royals have potential to be competitive?  What would they need to add?
Steve Adams
4:06
I do not.
Billy Boy
4:06
do the Rockies have enough for a WC slot again?
Steve Adams
4:07
I think they'll be in that mix, yeah. The bullpen improvements are kind of being oversold, but I like Jon Gray and German Marquez to take steps forward, and Ian Desmond basically has to be better than he was in '17
The rest of the

Story looks good this spring, you buying 35+ homers?
Steve Adams
4:09
I wouldn't base any opinion on 27 spring plate appearances -- especially not when he's whiffed in eight of them.

I don't think Story will ever make enough contact for that, and even if he does, the 35 HR would probably come with a .230 average and a .290 OBP. I'm not a huge fan.
Hmm
4:10
Which GM/President of Baseball Operations is on the hot seat in your opinion?
Steve Adams
4:12
I'd say Michael Hill in Miami, not necessarily through any fault of his own. But new ownership groups will often eventually make replacements and want to bring in their own guy. Hill is a leftover from the Loria days.

Dan Duquette (Orioles) is in the final year of his deal, and I could see the O's making a change after the year.
Biff Pocoroba
4:13
Is Bud Black serious when he hints that there’s a chance McMahon opens season in Triple-AAA?
Steve Adams
4:13
I don't see why he wouldn't be. He's hit well in a handful of spring ABs, but he only had 70 AAA games before debuting last year and didn't hit in his tiny MLB sample. If they don't feel they have immediate everyday ABs for him, it's probably better to have him get those reps in AAA>

What happens to Keon Broxton?
Steve Adams
4:14
Heads to AAA and eventually gets traded or just gets traded before Opening Day. I don't think there's a big future in Milwaukee for him. Giants are a possible fit.
Pat
4:14
Keon Broxton hit .220 with a .323 BABIP. That's hard to do.
Steve Adams

Strikeouts and dingers!
