Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/13/18

Rangers closer
4:15
Talk of Lincecum? Or do you see Claudio holding it or possibly Kela getting a look?
Steve Adams
4:15
Lincecum isn't coming out of spring training with the closer's gig, but if he proves himself a competent reliever and whoever breaks camp with the job (Kela?) struggles, he'll be in the mix.
Adam Steves
4:16
Time to let teams trade draft picks? Who says no, players or owners?
Steve Adams
4:18
I think they should be able to. It'd benefit both -- gives teams another path to rebuild and, in doing so, lessens the need to tank over multi-year terms to build up your draft pool. And if teams aren't tanking for 2-3 years at a time (or if they're acquiring picks but also signing free agents since they have a new avenue to boost their draft pool), then that's good for free agents as well.

What do you think of the Pads offseason moves, and do they have the worst rotation in the NL?
Steve Adams
4:19
Not a fan of the Hosmer signing, but they got a borderline inexplicably good deal on Brad Hand  and I'm generally fine with the Galvis thing. Liked the Bryan Mitchell and Kaz Makita adds.

And while they may have some question marks in their rotation, take a look at what's going to pass as a starting staff in Miami.
4:20
Plus the Padres have plenty of big arms looming in the upper minors.
Scherzer's Blue Eye
4:20
AJ Cole is not the 5th starter all year, is he?
Steve Adams
4:20
Still not entirely convinced they don't add another option before the season even begins.
Iced coffee...
4:21
Starbucks Frap?  That's only $5 a bottle...how rich are you?
Steve Adams
4:22
I haven't made a purchase at Starbucks in years. My "iced coffee" was just black coffee made in my own french press, chilled in the fridge and poured over ice. It was delightful.
Crystal ball
4:22
What does the magic crystal ball of predictions have for my boy Johan camargo for 2018?
Steve Adams
4:22
If you're referring to him as "your boy," you probably don't want my predictions for Camargo...
4:23
He had a .364 BABIP and one of the worst hard-contact rates in the league with no semblance of plate discipline or strike zone recognition (34.4 percent chase rate, 4.7 percent walk rate)
4:24
He's at best a utility player, and I'm not even sold on him as a big leaguer. I think his bat is going to crash back to Earth in a massive way this year.
Billy Eppler
4:25
Where do I rank in WildCard order...and could I do anything to improve my situation without giving up my draft pick?
Steve Adams
4:26
You can go back in time and give Neil Walker something like 2/10, then boot Kaleb Cowart from your bench. (Don't understand why they weren't more involved there)

Realistically, they should be keeping an eye on out-of-options relievers, and I wouldn't hate a minor league deal for a guy like Trevor Cahill.
Jim Devlin
4:27
If most of the "questionable" free agent deals are form earlier in the offseason (Jay Bruce, A-Gon, A-Jax) and there's a ton of value in these recent, then do you expect even more teams to play the wait and see approach to free agents not named Machado and Harper next year?
Steve Adams
4:27
Free agents who sign early almost always get paid more. That's not a new situation.
Kurt
4:28
Will Chris Archer be moved by the trade deadline?
Steve Adams
4:29
I don't think so. He's still so valuable, and I don't think the Rays are going to be nearly as bad as most people think. Maybe next offseason, but even then, they have three years of him. They'll listen, like always, but they're not going to move him unless someone bowls them over -- as in an offer bigger than the Quintana package or on par with the Sale package.
Yankees optioned Gleyber Torres -- not much of a surprise there.
Repeat performance
4:29
More likely to repeat their 2017 in 2018 Logan Morrison or Justin Smoak?
Steve Adams
4:30
Morrison has a 130 wRC+ dating back to May 2016, and he was an exit velocity darling the year before that. I'm buying him as more than a one-year wonder.
4:32
Ok, I've got to wrap this up for the week. I'll be off next Tuesday, but Jason and Jeff will be hosting their regular chats Wednesday (6:30pm CT) and Thursday (2pm CT) as always. I'm also on Twitter if you'd like to shoot any more questions my way: @Adams_Steve

Thanks for chatting and have a good week!
