Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams 3/16/21

Steve Adams

Nope. We'd have it up on the site if it was. To everyone's surprise, the league and MLBPA are not moving swiftly on things.
Matt

With Britton out for awhile, what do the Yankees do to fill his spot? Free agent? Trade? Go with what they have?
Steve Adams
3:01
I expect they'll go with what they have. It's still a talented group with Chapman, Green, O'Day, Wilson -- and they're within about $3.5MM of the luxury tax, so I don't see them, say, signing Shane Greene to add more depth.
Al Bundy
3:02
Who do you see as the Dodgers closer long term?
Steve Adams
3:03
Of the guys on the roster now, Brusdar Graterol seems likely -- but that can change on a year-over-year basis, and despite their deal with Kenley Jansen (which was ownership driven), I don't think this Dodgers front office is really married to the idea of one defined closer.

Nobody is talking about the Phillies in the NL East, but they certainly can win that division if everyone performs. Do you agree?
Steve Adams
3:04
You could give me a sneak peek at the end-of-year results, and I wouldn't really be surprised to see any of the Mets, Braves, Nats or Phillies winning the division. (Sorry, Marlins fans)

Odds on Kris Bryant getting dealt mid-season?
Steve Adams
3:06
It's entirely dependent on the Cubs' performance as a team and his performance as an individual. It's clearly possible, but if you want some type of crude percentage guess -- I hate doing these since they're totally subjective and imprecise -- 25 percent-ish?
Curt
3:06
Freddy Peralta, starter or reliever?
Steve Adams
3:07
I want to see him get a real chance to start, but I think it's likelier he opens in the 'pen and maybe makes some spot starts along the way.

Think Tigers move Jacoby Jones to make room for rule 5 er  Akin Baddoo?
Steve Adams
3:10
They don't need to move Jones to keep Baddoo. And Jones himself has shown he can be a valuable player -- just lacks consistency.
Ohtani 100 IP
3:10
Over or under?
Steve Adams
3:10
I think most people would take the under. I certainly would. Injury risk remains, and the club is going to be quite careful with him.
Iron Man
3:11
If Ohtani pitches 100 innings this year I will eat my helmet.
Steve Adams
3:11
There you have it.

Jonathan Davis looks like a classic fourth OF — speed, glove and a bit of pop at minimum wage. He’ll be wasted in the minors. Why haven’t the Jays moved Grichuk or someone from their OF/DH logjam for a pitcher?
Steve Adams
3:12
Because Grichuk himself can play all three OF spots -- probably not as well but with more power. And the remaining 3/28 on his contract is tough to move
Blue
3:12
Does Moose-Suarez-India-Votto have the potential to be the worst defensive infield ever assembled?
Steve Adams
3:13
It would not be good, but I'm sure we could think of some others without thinking too hard. That quartet with Castellanos and Winker in the OF corners would seem like a rough all-around defensive club, though.
Jake
3:13
McKay, McClanahan, or Patino? who is a bigger impact on the Rays this year?
Steve Adams
3:14
McClanahan. McKay hasn't even started throwing post-shoulder surgery yet, and while Patino has the most long-term upside for them, I'd say McClanahan is likelier to pitch for them early in the year.
Ohtani
3:16
If I can’t be projected for 100 innings, why am I even in the rotation?  Ridiculous.
Steve Adams
3:17
Because they want to build him up as a starter for future seasons. I don't see anything ridiculous about that. We're going to see a decrease in pitcher workloads across the board. And Ohtani has pitched 53 innings over the past three years. Sending him right back into a 150-inning workload never seemed likely.
Rangers29
3:17
Why does this site hate the Rangers? Gotta be one of the least talked about teams, despite some seriously interesting players on the way. You guys follow the Astros ad nauseum.
Steve Adams
3:19
The Rangers are the "why do you hate my team" du jour, it seems. If you want us to talk about the Rangers in every post, as seems to be the case, I don't know what to tell you. If you're upset at the lack of Rangers questions in this week's chat -- there haven't been many.
That’s it, Fort Pitt
3:19
Better chance at meaningful big league innings this year, Matt Harvey or Felix Hernandez?
Steve Adams
3:19
Can it be neither? Felix just exited a start with elbow discomfort :(
Tom Hanks
3:20
Does Kyle Lewis take a big step forward and become an elite player this year?
Steve Adams
3:23
You want a big step forward from the Rookie of the Year!?

I think if Lewis can continue to cut back on his strikeouts, then sure, there's a possible second gear and room for more power given his strong barrel rates. But he's a good player as it is -- you should be happy with the current product, too.
Chunk Bunkles
3:23
Which Corbin Burnes is real, 2019 or 2020 version?
Steve Adams
3:23
I am 100% buying Burnes as a high-end starter.
3:25
Ok, I've got to wrap up for the week. Thanks for chatting. I'll do it again next week, and we've got a Front Office chat this Friday. I'm on Twitter for further questions and insults alike: @Adams_Steve. Enjoy your week!
