They're in a better position, depth-wise, than they were last year.

Have the Mariners done enough to compete in the AL West?  It seemed like they had everything lined up with $ and prospects, but that they are a move or two short.  What do you think?
Steve Adams
2:38
I think if the Mariners are done for the offseason, it's fair for fans to be pretty disappointed. The stage seemed set for some marquee additions because of all the payroll space they had. Adding Robbie Ray was a nice start, but if your big post-lockout moves are to trade for a platoon OF (albeit a lethal one against RHP), to eat the remainder of the Suarez contract ... it's just not great. If you'd told me in October that the Mariners' infield in 2022 would have Eugenio Suarez at 3B and Adam Frazier at 2B, I'd have asked what went wrong.

Can Colome really survive as the closer in Colorado?
Steve Adams
2:39
He didn't survive as the closer in Minnesota. Colome's a fine enough boring reliever, but his performances with the White Sox always looked fluky.

Who do you think is the most active fan base in these chats?
Steve Adams
2:40
Pretty steady streams of Braves, Angels, Yankees, Mets throughout the year. Cubs.

With the Twins moves, is it fair to call the Tigers the 4th best team in the Central?
Steve Adams
2:42
FanGraphs projects Detroit at 75-87, fourth place in the Central. I think that's light, but I don't know that as currently constructed, I'd place them ahead of Minnesota or Cleveland. Definitely not Chicago.

2:42
M's Zach DeLoach and Levi Stoudt for Reds Tyler Mahle. Who hangs up first?
Steve Adams
2:43
The Reds' GM has publicly said he does not expect to trade Mahle or Castillo, and it is exceptionally rare to see a GM make that type of on-record statement and then walk it back anyhow.
SURPRISE!!!!
2:43
What do you think was the biggest surprise FA signing or trade post lockout?
Steve Adams
2:43
I don't know the numbers, but I'd be surprised if 1% of our participants in the Free Agent contest had Correa to Minnesota. Hard to be more surprising than that.

2:43
Where do you see Cueto signing
Steve Adams
2:44
Twins have interest and have been connected to him a few different times. I'll throw them out there, but he's one of the only decent arms left on the market so you could easily drop him in a lot of places. Angels, Mariners, Yankees, Cardinals, Nats, Braves
Dan
2:45
I keep hoping the Reds will sign Tommy Pham! He screams bounce-back to me, and the Reds need competent outfielders. What would your prediction be for where he ends up, and for how much?
Steve Adams
2:45
Cleveland for a year and $5-7MM?
Mets
2:46
Can Kris Bryant carry Colorado to the playoffs?
Steve Adams
2:47
Not sure the Rockies make the playoffs even if you drop Trout and Ohtani onto that roster. Bryant certainly isn't going to carry them there this year, but it's feasible that he could be an important piece of a playoff roster at some point in the next few years if they catch a few breaks in terms of their pitcher development.

Do you think the Red Sox will give bogarts a new contract?
Steve Adams
2:48
I think he'll opt out and sign elsewhere, with Story moving to SS (and providing a mammoth defensive upgrade)

Any Kimbrel trade scenarios?
Steve Adams
2:50
It seems like the Sox probably overestimated their ability to move him. Not ruling out a move, but it seems less likely than it did the day the lockout lifted.

What needs to go right for the Tigers to make the playoffs this year, even as a wildcard?
Steve Adams
2:51
Torkelson and Greene come up and rake. Skubal and Mize take steps forward. Those are the biggest ones. The rest of the veteran pieces they put in place -- E-Rod, Pineda, Chafin, etc. -- are all fine and reasonably priced.

2:52
Is there a reason the Trevor Story signing is not official yet?
Steve Adams
2:53
Hasn't even been 48 hours since he agreed to terms. Needs to get to Florida, take his physical, etc. The Twins agreed with Correa like 36 hours before Story's agreement in Boston, and Minnesota didn't make Correa official until this morning.
Paddack
2:53
Odds I'm included in a trade for an outfielder?
Steve Adams
2:54
I think there's a non-zero chance Paddack is moved, sure. He's at least sixth on the SP depth chart, and they have tons of options on the 40-man even beyond him. Probably would hurt to sell low on someone they valued so much just two years ago, though.

The thought of Cueto in a Cardinals jersey makes me want to puke
Steve Adams
2:55
Ha, fair. I was just listing teams that could feasibly add a cheap SP. Cueto-to-STL seems decidedly less likely than the others, given the history.

2:55
I’m sure the Cubs would trade Heyward and cash for Kimbrel. Just saying.
Steve Adams
2:55
There you go White Sox fans. Get excited!

2:56
next team to blow things up?
Steve Adams
2:59
Hopefully we're moving further away from the full-scale teardowns, but the Reds, D-backs and Nats all seem like candidates for midseason selling. Can't help but wonder whether the Padres would do some kind of soft reboot this summer, too, given the number of expensive veterans and the huge spending there. Would depend on the first-half performance, of course.

Generally, though, I think we'll increasingly see more teams trying to thread the needle by moving short-term veterans and salary while also trying to build up their team's floor and retain some level of competence.

After showing at least some interest in Correa, do you see the Orioles getting a big name next winter?
Steve Adams
3:00
Yeah, I do. This is a team that not that long ago had consistent $150-165MM payrolls. At some point they're going to spend to supplement the core they're developing -- probably quickly and aggressively.

Do you think the Texas Rangers will make the playoffs in 2022?
Steve Adams
3:01
I don't think even the Rangers expect themselves to make the playoffs this year.
3:02
Their moves have been more about 2023 and beyond
