Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/22/22

What is your level of enthusiasm about the talent brought back in trades this offseason?
The Chapman return in particular felt underwhelming…
Steve Adams
3:05
The A's always get what people deem to be light returns because they focus on near-MLB players who are often floor over ceiling, but they consistently maximize those returns. Sometimes it's a simple means of the Coliseum making a fourth/fifth starter type play up above his projections, but certainly not always the case. They were panned for getting "only" Semien, Bassitt and Phegley (and Rangel Ravelo) for Jeff Samardzija.

Oakland is pretty consistently competitive despite constantly turning the roster over. I think fans get way, way too hung up on top-100 prospect lists and probably believe there's more of a gap between whoever is ranked around No. 100 and someone who might be ranked, say, 150 or even 200th.
Re: Nats
3:06
Can the Nats get a meaningful piece by trading for Moustakas, or Myers, or Price, etc.?
Steve Adams
3:08
Define "meaningful"? Sure they could get a decent mid-tier prospect or two. Or maybe they could get the Padres to throw in a decent MLB-ready arm if they take on Myers.

Those possibilities have existed for some time now, however, and the Nats didn't make that move. And, a lot of the players a team like the Padres might have pursued if they'd succeeded in unloading Myers have now gone elsewhere, so there's probably less motivation on their end as well.

If the Cubs do trade Contreras, could they expect a top 100 prospect?  Top 50?
Steve Adams
3:08
I doubt it.

With McCullers not throwing yet, do you think they'll add some depth to their rotation?
Steve Adams
3:10
Verlander, Framber, Garcia, Urquidy, Javier, Odorizzi, Ivey, Bielak, Solomon ... they already have a lot of SP depth even with LMC ailing.

Will Nicky C....take over my 3B job?
Steve Adams
3:11
Castellanos isn't going back to 3B, though I would commend it as a "TAKE YOUR DEFENSE AND SHOVE IT" flex from the Phillies, ha.
May as well get Meadows and put him in CF at that point.

How does jotcast work?  Do the questions pile in and you pick as you see them?  Do you queue them?  Just wondering how you pick what you pick or just pick at random as they show up
Steve Adams
3:11
They just pile in and I take them. We have 900ish people in here right now so I'm obviously only getting to a very small fraction of them.

What’s taking so long to trade Manaea/Montas? The rumors seem to have slowed down the last few days. Any chance we hold on to them until the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:13
Doubt they hold till the deadline -- certainly not on Manaea. The Reds guys are pretty much off the market and the A's aren't facing a lot of competition in marketing quality arms. I'm sure they're holding out for a strong return and trying to get someone to blink on a prospect or two they've previously been unwilling to deal.
Jurickson Profar
3:14
Am the answer to the question, in LF?
Steve Adams
3:14
I think Profar is the answer to "Other than Eric Hosmer, name a ridiculous contract the Padres didn't need to give out"
3:15
Ha, that was overly sarcastic/cynical, sorry. But no -- he's not their solution in LF. Or he shouldn't be.

Phillies should make "F*** Defense. Hit Dingers" shirts for this year
Steve Adams
3:15
They'd sell!

If Conforto settles for a 1 year high salary contract is there a better spot for him than the Jays?
Steve Adams
3:17
White Sox?

I don't think he'll take a straight one-year deal though. Most high-profile players take contracts more like the ones given to Rodon and Correa this year. 2-3 years in length, frequent opt-outs, etc. That's the modern pillow contract.

And, not that the Boras Corporation is the only agency that does those types of deals, Boras reps all of Conforto, Rodon and Correa.

Is getting Montas/Manea both possible? Say the Twins offer Arraez/Balazovic/Martin.
Steve Adams
3:18
It's possible, but it'd take a haul. Putting Martin and Balazovic in the same package would get the A's attention as a starting point, I'm sure.

Your money - who has a better year: Ray or Gausman?
Steve Adams
3:19
Gausman, but I think Ray will also be good. I just don't know if I buy him repeating a 6% walk rate.
