They're planning to contend (obviously), and MAT had a damn good 2017. I'm sure they'll just hang onto the depth and call on Robles if an injury necessitates a promotion. If not, he'll be up in September and very likely will be in line for a larger role in 2019. He's still only 20.

Gallo has to pop a few bunts down the 3B line with that absurd shift right? He should be in the cage all day today practicing nothing but that.
Steve Adams
2:44
You could say this about half the left-handed batters in the league.

Hi Steve, Being a big Sox fan I'd love to see them sign both Mookie Betts & Chis Sale to extensions. What do you think the chances are both of them do so?
Steve Adams
2:46
Betts has said he's not interested in talking long-term deal right now, and Sale already took his team-friendly extension years ago with the White Sox. He's not signing an extension before free agency (which comes after 2019) unless Boston just ponies up and pays him something that tops Scherzer and Price for total guarantee.
Cardinals
2:46
Who does Holland replace in the cardinals pen
Steve Adams
2:48
He'll just push out their least effective league-min reliever with options remaining. Could see Hicks and Mayers both pushed out once Holland and Gregerson are healthy. Maybe Tuivailala if he really bombs early in the season

Is odubel herrera on the way out of town, how else can opening day snub be justified.
Steve Adams
2:49
Sounds like Kapler and the Phillies are going to try to get him, Hoskins, Williams and Altherr as many ABs as possible -- probably with Hoskins leading the pack in ABs -- and they'll focus more on getting Herrera downtime when ground-ball pitchers are on the mound since they want him out there every time they have a fly-ball guy on the mound.

Thoughts on the mound visit limits?
Steve Adams
2:49
Doesn't bother me.

Do you see more teams bring back the bullpen carts? Seems like a fun idea
Steve Adams
2:50
I think it's fun, but seems like not all the players agree. TIgers reporters were saying none of the DET relievers are planning to use it, for instance.

Cubs fans are already calling for Schwarber's benching after yesterday's defensive issues. Nothing like pushing the panic button after one freakin' day.
Steve Adams
2:51
Every team's fans are overreacting to something after one day. But, to be fair, it's not like yesterday is the first time Schwarber's glove has been called into question. His defense has been an ongoing issue since he debuted more or less.

Hey Steve, name the team that misses the playoffs.  Twins, Brewers, Mariners, Redsox, Rockies.
Steve Adams
2:53
Of that bunch, in order of likeliest to make the playoffs for me: Red Sox, Twins, Brewers, Rockies, Mariners
2:54
Also, re: earlier question on if Jordan Zimmermann is "back" to something resembling his Nats form -- he's up to 4 ER in 5+ innings.

Cardinals more likely to DFA someone like Norris or Tuivailala with Holland signing or send one or more younger arms down?
Steve Adams
2:54
Can't imagine them DFA'ing Norris after signing him for $3MM like six weeks ago.
Brent
2:54
Remember when Bryce Harper was a catcher? Imagine the contract he would get this offseason if he was still catching
Steve Adams
2:55
He probably wouldn't have made it to the Majors as a 19-year-old, as his defense would've required quite a bit more work. And given what a beating catchers take, who knows if he'd have remained healthy?

Do you think the O's can win a wild card spot?
Steve Adams
2:55
I do not.

2:56
Why don't I get any love on the nation level for being a great pitcher?
Steve Adams
2:57
I'd call a third-place finish in the NL Cy Young voting in 2016 some pretty notable national-level love.
Steve
2:57
What are the chances that the Rays' four-man (now three-man) rotation becomes replicated by another small-market team (A's, Marlins) by next season? Chances of this experiment being a success across MLB?
Steve Adams
2:58
Need to see how it works, but I think within another five to six years the entire structure of a starting rotation will have changed pretty dramatically. There's just too much evidence indicating that starters' performance craters when facing a lineup for the third time. The next CBA adding a 26th roster spot would go a long way toward facilitating pretty significant change in that regard.

Ok, I'm going to wrap this up for the week. You can always send me more questions on Twitter: @Adams_Steve. I'll chat again Tuesday next week (2pm CT). Jason chats Wednesdays at 6:30pm CT, and Jeff Thursdays at 2pm CT.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!
