Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/9/20

Cleveland

Bradley or Bauers starting 1B on opening day?
Steve Adams
2:31
I'd say Bauers is likelier just because he's out of minor league options and they  didn't get a look at him at all last year (albeit, by their own choosing). Still, they carried him on the roster all winter
Nick
2:32
Chances we see Mackenzie Gore to start out the season?
Steve Adams
2:33
If they didn't call him up at all in 2020, I can't see them just dropping him on the Opening Day roster in 2021 -- especially not with the depth they have. But he should be up sometime this year.
Royals
2:33
Fastest team?
Steve Adams
2:33
Possibly, although I'd wager that's been the case more often than not the past 10 years or so. The Royals love them some light-hitting speedsters.

How much of a rebound can we expect from Yelich?  Or has he peaked and will just be mediocre while making the big $?
Steve Adams
2:36
I would give him the benefit of the doubt -- and then some -- as he was coming off that gruesome knee fracture last winter.

Side note: I've now been asked if Yelich, Arenado, Matt Olson and Nick Castellanos have peaked or are over the hill because they struggled for a month or two last summer. (Across the board: no)
Jaime Barria
2:36
Do I have an extra option?
Steve Adams
2:36
Barria himself still doesn't know the answer to that. League and union discussing.
Minnesota Twins
2:37
Do I sign anymore free agents or make any trades before the season starts?
Steve Adams
2:38
Their president of baseball ops, Derek Falvey, said last week that they're focused on the players they have in camp at this point. I wouldn't expect that they make any big adds, unless an injury pops up and prompts them to look at the trade market. Even then, they have pretty good depth around the diamond, so I'd imagine they'd be looking more for depth adds than for major names
Barney
2:39
Are you saying the players are opposed to expanded playoffs?  Why?
Steve Adams
2:40
I don't think they're necessarily "opposed" to it --  but they know it will make the league/owners hundreds of millions of dollars and will be far more beneficial to ownership than to them. So they want something that actually matters in return for agreeing to that.

Cole Hamels seems to make a lot of sense for the Angels, even without factoring in the geographic appeal and the Joe Maddon connection. Do you think it's Major League deal or bust for Hamels?
Steve Adams
2:41
As of late January he was still looking at setting up a showcase. There's no indication that's happened yet.

If Gimenez beats out A Rosario at SS, what happens to Rosario? Outfield? or gets traded?
Steve Adams
2:43
I think he'd just bounce around the diamond in a super-utility capacity. Cleveland could still trade him during the season I suppose, but I feel if that was going to happen before Opening Day it'd have happened by now.
Fred McGriff
2:43
Am I a Hall of Famer?
Steve Adams
2:43
Should be
Walleye Wade
2:43
Shane Greene a Twin possibly?
Steve Adams
2:44
As previously stated, the Twins all but ruled out adding anyone on a big league deal at this point. I think he'll sign elsewhere.
Rockies Fan
2:44
Will the rockies win a championship without like how the nationals won a world series after bryce harper left
Steve Adams
2:44
They'll probably win one someday, but not in 2021 and probably not with this ownership/front office group.
Appa Yip Yip
2:45
What quality starters do you expect to be available at the deadline?
Steve Adams
2:47
Pretty much the entire Giants rotation (Gausman, DeSclafani, Wood, Sanchez, Cueto) ... Steven Brault, Chad Kuhl, Jon Gray, James Paxton, Garrett Richards, Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull
Justin
2:47
Grichuk and McGuire for a bullpen arm that is named...? Which team would give up a bullpen arm for those 2 players, thinking a team in need of a catcher.
Steve Adams
2:48
Unless the Jays are eating a large portion of the $28MM still owed to Grichuk, I don't think they're getting much of anything if he's involved in a trade
Injuries
2:49
What's the weirdest baseball injury you've heard of?
Steve Adams
2:49
It's coming up on 20 years old now, but it's still hard to top Clint Barmes injuring himself while lugging a package of deer meat up his apartment stairs.
Corey Dickerson
2:50
Am I a trade candidate since I’ll be a free agent next year?
Steve Adams
2:50
I could see them trying to find a taker this summer, but he didn't have much trade value this winter.
Injury
2:51
What about Smoltz burning himself while ironing a shirt he was wearing.
Steve Adams
2:51
Lew Ford did this with the Twins, too.

If at the end of june the angels are right in the thick of things....do you see them flipping marsh or addell for a luis castillo/sonny gray/german marquez type of front line starter
Steve Adams
2:52
I think they will look to do something along those lines if they're in the mix and the Reds, Rockies, or someone with a No. 1/No. 2 type of SP are pretty clearly out of the playoff picture, yes.

With Jose martinez out 4 months, does Gyorko makes a lot of sense for the Mets bench doesnt he?
Steve Adams
2:53
He made more sense for them than Martinez did in the first place, I would say.

There's also Jeremy Affeldy cutting his hand open while trying to separate frozen burger patties with a kitchen knife.

I sneezed and hurt my back and had to go on the DL for 2 weeks.
