Unless they want to put both of them on the 25-man roster, yeah -- it's DFA them and hope they pass through waivers. (or just trade them to another org who wants to put one of them on the 25-man)

There's one or two every offseason. I remember wanting to throw my laptop out the window multiple times during the Masahiro Tanaka saga. The Stanton saga this offseason was tiresome, but thankfully somewhat abbreviated. Tim Lincecum's agents trying to make his first return (when he eventually signed with the Angels) into a big deal got old quickly. Biogenesis.

I could see him making an All-Star team or two. I think he's going to hit for a good average with great OBP numbers, but the lack of power might keep him from being a perennial All-Star.

When a rule 5 player is returned do they still have options or do they have to clear waivers if they get called up and sent down?

Using Cortes as the example since he just got DFAed -- the Orioles can gauge trade interest or place him on outright waivers, like a standard DFA. If he's traded elsewhere or claimed by another team, he'll retain Rule 5 eligibility and have to stick on that team's 25-man roster just as he would've had to do in Baltimore.

They listened to offers on both this offseason and didn't like what they heard. Abreu seems like someone they want to keep around beyond his current deal. As for Garcia -- look what bat-first corner OFs got in free agency and returned on the trade market this winter.
