Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/13/21

Steve Adams
2:36
I would expect so, yes
Ben Cherington
2:37
Who are the pieces I’m the most likely to move at deadline?
Steve Adams
2:37
(Cherington is the Pirates GM, for those not on a name basis with all 30 of them)
2:38
Richard Rodriguez, Adam Frazier, Tyler  Anderson, Trevor Cahill, Chris Stratton, Michael Feliz, Steven Brault, Chad Kuhl (assuming health and reasonable/decent performance of course)

What's the soonest any pitcher has come back from TJ? I can see Verlander being one guy to push that envelope.
Steve Adams
2:40
I feel like Volquez came back at like 10 months his first time. Of course, that might contribute to why I needed to specify "first time".

Generally, teams are more reserved than ever. Verlander might want to push it, but I doubt he wants to jeopardize further injury at his age. If he were planning to retire post-2021 no matter what, sure, but I don't expect him to pitch this year.

The White Sox are using Andrew Vaughn sparingly in LF. Do they send him down once AAA season starts? Any LF out there that the Sox could pursue?
Steve Adams
2:41
It is utterly bizarre to me that the Sox are playing Vaughn so inconsistently. Put him in the lineup every day and let the guy try to get comfortable.
Troy C
2:41
Will the White Sox play Yermin Mercedes at catcher this year?
Steve Adams
2:42
Might drop him back there on occasion, but they have both Grandal and Collins there, so I don't think it's going to happen that often. If you're asking for fantasy purposes (i.e. when will he get C eligibility and shed the dreaded "Util" status), I think it'll be awhile before he gets the requisite 5-10 starts.

2:43
Thoughts on the brew crews starting rotation this year??
Steve Adams
2:44
It is very good.

2:44
Is Cobb this year's steal from the O's for the Angels?
Steve Adams
2:46
Jump in splitter usage is interesting, but I'd prefer to see more than two starts and am rather wary about his durability. I saw more in Bundy at the time of that trade (much more) than in Cobb, but at least early on they Halos are making me eat my mocking words for that trade.
Josh
2:47
Should the Reds be starting Tejay Antone in your opinion? Dude is nasty!
Steve Adams
2:48
I imagine he'll get some starts and also continue to be used in longer multi-inning relief stints. I agree that he's quite good, but he also tossed just 35 innings last year. I doubt they want to run him out there 27 times and let him rack up 160+ innings.
2:49
Plus – and this is the case with any pitcher, not just Antone – part of the reason he's looked so dominant is the rarity with which he's had to turn a lineup over for a second or third time. He's only pitched into the lineup for a third time once, and he faced three batters a third time that day.
2:50
Astros are finalizing a one-year extension with Martin Maldonado, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com

Is there any news on a Trevor story trade
Steve Adams
2:51
There won't be until this summer
Cleetus

Thanks for doing these chats.  I'm not blind to the shortcomings of the Red Sox, but shouln't they be getting more respect.  Chaim looks to have used 2013 as a template
Steve Adams
2:55
They're just so health-dependent -- and so much more so than many other clubs. They need Sale to come back at 100%, E-Rod to remain healthy, Eovaldi to remain healthy, Richards to remain healthy after not reaching 150 innings in like six years... etc. They'd also need a Franchy breakout, a Renfroe rebound, Dalbec or someone else to seize 1B, one of Gonzalez/Hernandez to hit like a regular rather than a bench player... I think the '13 club had a better base.

We have not heard any update in regard to Angel Pitching Coach Mickey Callaway. Can you update?
Steve Adams
2:57
If we had one it'd be up on the site. I'm as perplexed as anyone as to why the investigation is taking so long.
Eric
2:58
If your the Twins, are you giving up one or two of your top prospects for a   good bullpen arm? Tired of Colome already... Will Hader be available this Summer?
Steve Adams
2:59
Hader is only available if the Brewers are out of it, and with the Woodruff/Burnes/Peralta trio, I don't see that happening. Twins have some interesting in-house arms they'll try first (Shaun Anderson, Lewis Thorpe), but pretty much any contender is always on the hunt for bullpen help at the deadline.

It's hard to imagine the Rays are serious about sliding Brent Honeywell into the rotation this season based on his extensive injury history even after his promising debut. How do you see him being used this year?
Steve Adams
3:00
Multi-inning relief stints and short starts with managed workloads probably. I agree, they're not just going to give him the ball for six innings every fifth or even sixth day.
Ohtani
3:01
Should I just be a hitter? Hard for me to stay on the mound.
Steve Adams
3:03
I've been getting asked this question for three years and it still makes little sense to me. Even if he's a better hitter than pitcher, he's clearly a talented pitcher. And he pitched quite well in Japan. And he hit for most of the season post-TJ surgery. So why the rush to take him off the mound? He's a rare talent ... let the experiment continue.
Pirate at Heart
3:03
Do you think we catch a sighting of Travis Swaggerty this year?
Steve Adams
3:04
Doubt it. Hasn't played above A-ball yet, and the Pirates will be in no rush to start his service clock.
Barry
3:04
With Lamet shelved, and Morejon down with injury, who fills the remaining rotation spot? Trade,FA or farm?
Steve Adams
3:06
Seems like a short-term issue; Lamet is nearing a return. Padres have Gore in the upper minors as well, if they need a long-term replacement.
Brent
3:07
Will Baltimore trade John Means or is he sticking around through the rebuild?  Seems like this is the season to sell high on him
Steve Adams
3:08
They control him all the way through 2024. No rush to move him unless some team makes a particularly compelling offer.
Trader Phil
3:08
Safer bet in terms of fantasy prospect stashes? Gore or Kiriloff?
Steve Adams
3:09
I generally prefer the hitter. Pitchers break more regularly.
Tim
3:09
Is this Baddoo guy for real?
Steve Adams
3:11
I hope so! He's tons of fun. But he also hadn't played above A-ball prior to being taken in the Rule 5, and didn't play at all in 2020. I would imagine the league catches up to him... it's only been 21 plate appearances, after all.

Would be delighted if he proves me wrong though. That guy has had the start to a big league career every single one of us used to dream about playing in our backyards.
