Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/2/19

Steve Adams

He's not earning that much nor is he devoid of present-day, on-field value. The Jays wouldn't have given up a prospect just to shed the contract.

Is Rick Renteria on the hot seat after another example of mismanaging the bullpen ?
Steve Adams
3:37
The White Sox extended him recently.
(That's a no)

Do the Giants now trade with the Reds for Winker?
Steve Adams
3:38
Zero reason for the Reds, who are trying to be good, to trade one of their best offensive players, as he helps them toward said goal of being good.
They also control him for another 5 seasons

Do you think Mariners are one of the multiple teams talking to  Dallas Keuchel .
Steve Adams
3:40
I don't think a team in their position would have interest in surrendering a draft pick to sign him. I generally think the Mariners will be better than most people seem to project (though still not a good team), so I'd be fine with them signing him. But I don't think it's remotely likely.

Nola gave away a lot of years too. Acuna should have gotten closer to trouts first deal.
Steve Adams
3:43
Nola gave away two free-agent seasons and, as a pitcher, I can find it more understandable to take any kind of long-term deal. I didn't love that deal, but I don't think you can compare a 0-1 position player and a 3+ starting pitcher when you're talking extensions.

And the Trout contract was a ridiculous bargain even at the time. Acuna should've been looking to get to the same service level Trout and then crush that deal, if he wanted a long-term arrangement.
same service level as Trout*
when he signed that first extension
Typing is hard.

Odds of Chris Davis playing out his entire contract?
Steve Adams
3:44
Slim to none?

Rule check...If Keuchel signs after June 1st, no draft pick is lost. Correct?
Steve Adams
3:44
If he signs after the draft
Same for Kimbrel

When Roman Quinn returns from the IL, should I option Nick Williams to AAA or DFA Aaron Altherr (out of options)?
Steve Adams
3:46
I don't see a ton to love in Altherr, but if you wanted to keep him under the logic that you'd prefer Williams to get everyday ABs in AAA (before he is eventually traded), I guess I could buy that thinking.
Cubbies
3:46
Maddon the Cubs skipper in 2020?
Steve Adams
3:46
I don't have any real reason for this answer beyond a basic gut feeling, but I'll say they move on

Why are the Angels rolling guys like Bourjos/ LaStella out there... its a joke! At least have Jose Rojas or Luis Rengifo ( instead of La Stella ) and maybe trade for Adam Duvall or ??? for LF until Upton is ready to return.
Steve Adams
3:49
Rengifo has like 40 games above AA and 80 above A-ball. Rojas played 19 games in AAA last season with a .230 OBP. Rushing to promote guys who aren't ready would be a panic move by the Angels. I don't see why you'd want them to trade for Duvall after the 2018 he had. I'd rather just have Bourjos/Goodwin out there.

Chances of a Tatis extension now that this is the season of extensions?
Steve Adams
3:52
I'm sure the Padres will talk to his reps about it, especially given that they didn't hold him down to get the extra year of service. But there's no way to put any real type of chances on that.

His agency (same as Machado) has never done an extension with a player this young, but most agencies haven't; there haven't been THAT many extensions for players with 0-1 year of MLB service in the past.

What's it going to take to keep me in Oak town? How about something like this - 2020 - $15m
2021 - $15m
2022 - $10m + $5m incentives + incentives for 2023 to kick in
2023 - $10m + $5m incentives
Steve Adams
3:54
I imagine Davis would say there's no reason he should have to rely on incentives to keep his salary at its prior levels in 2022 because he's already a proven asset.

If the A's offer something like $39-45MM over three years, I bet he'd consider it.

Am I going to Chicago's North Side on a 3 year deal?
Steve Adams
3:57
At this point, after the offseason the Cubs just had, I am genuinely baffled that some people still think they'll add significant payroll in 2019. They had to trade Drew Smyly just to pick up Hamels' option, and the rest of their moves consisted of "upgrading" at utility infield for a net cost of $150K and adding a handful of relievers for a combined $3M. Their owner has literally said "we don't have any more money." That's a laughable load of BS from Tom Ricketts, and he deserves to be ridiculed to no end for having the gall to say that to fans, but the Cubs are not signing Craig Kimbrel (or acquiring any other notable player making any money)

So, with the dumps, Vlad Jr. gets called up to put butts in the seats??    Sure not so they can contend...
Steve Adams
3:58
Once his oblique is healed, he'll be up in short order. Even though he hasn't been playing, I'm sure they'll magically just be OK with his defensive shortcomings. On a totally unrelated note, he'll also check in somewhere around 160-171 days of MLB service at season's end and fall just shy of a full year. What a coincidence!
3:59
(Not saying the injury is fake -- just that all of the comments about how he's not MLB-ready were brutal)

I know Anaheim plays to lefthanded power but Bour has looked bad so far... should I wait until he returns from the long road trip?
Steve Adams
4:00
He's had 21 plate appearances.

Why do people keep asking where Kimbrel/Keuchel are going every single chat? If you guys knew 100%, then there would be an article already up. Can they just not think of anything else to ask but want to have a question answered?
Steve Adams
4:01
It's the nature of free agency questions. I get several hundred of those every week so I feel obligated to at least say "No one has any clue." And that goes for Dallas and Craig themselves.

If Pillar is "not earning that much", why did the Jays trade him?
Steve Adams
4:02
There's still some value in shedding the $5.5MM or so they'll save, but more than anything I think they want more at-bats for younger guys who are possible long-term pieces. More at-bats for Teoscar Hernandez, Anthony Alford, etc. etc.
