Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/2/24
powered byJotCast
Way Too Early 2
1:34
Based on the 4-7 games played, who are your picks to win each division?
Steve Adams
1:34
The first 4-7 games doesn't change my outlook. I picked the Dodgers, Cubs and Braves in the NL, and the Mariners, Twins and Orioles in the AL.

Will Steve ever not get a question about Trever Bauer? I think you should just start off every chat with a Bauer disclaimer *Bauer wants to pitch and will do so for league minimum. No one has signed him and my opinion is that no one will.
Steve Adams
1:36
Ha, yeah. I don't know. I try to balance the constant barrage of Bauer questions from people who clearly don't read my chats every week with those who do. But I get a couple hundred of them every week so it's hard not to at least do a quick answer, even if it's the same rehashed one: It hasn't happened. I doubt it will anytime soon.

You had Ronel Blanco as the 1st no hitter of the year, right?!
Steve Adams
1:36
Obviously, obviously.
1:37
Marlins acquired Emmanuel Rivera from the D-backs for cash
Shortstop Jacob Amaya DFA'ed in Miami

What is the cutoff date for the extra year of control?
Steve Adams
1:39
A player needs 172 days of service, so once you're 15 days into the 186-day season, they can't get a full year in 2024 without finishing top-two in ROY voting.

Bart for Amaya?
Steve Adams
1:40
Severely overstating Bart's value. I doubt he's traded for anything of any real big league value, and there's a chance he just goes to waivers.
The Biebs
1:40
Think he gets traded before the deadline?
Steve Adams
1:41
Depends entirely on how the Guardians are faring in the standings this July. He's an easy enough QO candidate that they can just keep him and assume they'll get a pick at the end of the first round.

1:41
Kirby or Gilbert? Which would you rather have long term?
Steve Adams
1:41
Kirby, personally, but Gilbert is quite good
Disgusted Sox Fan
1:42
So what are the chances the White Sox lose more than 120 games this season?
Steve Adams
1:43
Ha, I don't think anyone's going to lose 120. Rockies are my pick for worst MLB record (sorry Rox fans), and even they probably won't get there.

1:43
What are the chances the Braves pick up Bart to replace Tromp while Murphy is on the IL?
Steve Adams
1:44
Sure, they could, but doesn't leave them with much flexibility when everyone's healthy -- at least not if Bart plays well. They'd have to trade for him, since someone would claim Bart before the Braves' priority was up. And do you want to trade much of anything for a guy who's going to be a short-term stopgap and then can't be optioned? Doesn't seem like an ideal situation.

Are people gonna be surprised when the Red Sox keep pitching well and they finish with 85 wins and a WC spot?
Steve Adams
1:46
I would say that would qualify as a massive surprise, yes. And not one I envision happening. Good first week for Sox fans though!

1:47
Who signs first, Rich Hill or Zack Greinke?
Steve Adams
1:48
Hill has gone on record that he wants to keep pitching. With Greinke, we just have one report that he was preparing to pitch, but that's not the same as him saying "Yeah I'm going to sign." Seems clear he's had a preference to pitch in KC these past couple years, and they went another direction.

I hope he does. I love Greinke. But he's also 40 and not the guy he once was. Maybe he comes back just to chase his 3000th K, but he's unsurprisingly been silent on the matter.

So.... Hill, I guess. (Watch Greinke sign tomorrow)
Padres
1:49
Padres waiting for the DH slot to open up to sign someone. Once Manny goes back to 3b, they will send down Pauly/Wade/ Rosario and sign someone like Belt/Pham, if they are available. I think Preller may be gunshy on older players after the Nelly and Carp debacle
Steve Adams
1:50
Just sign Pham now and put him in LF over Profar. He's a better player. By a wide margin.

Justin Foscue has pretty awesome numbers (e.g. more BB than SO in AAA). Isn't he a bit to good offensively for a depth guy?
Steve Adams
1:51
He has really nice offensive numbers that'll be undercut by his lack of defensive value and below-average speed. I like him as a guy who can spend a bunch of time at DH and make occasional starts around the diamond but also be swapped out for a better defender when the Rangers are trying to protect leads late a game.

How many players can a team claim off waivers in a season
Steve Adams
1:51
There's no limit.
TIGER!!
1:51
4-0!!! I know it is completely unsustainable winning like this, but do you see the Tigers possibly pushing a top 10 pitching staff? Good depth, good bullpen, Miller and Foley looking amazing. Faedo found a new home. Holton good again. Possibly top 5 bullpen?
Steve Adams
1:53
Top-5 bullpen seems aggressive. Top 10-ish pitching staff overall? Possible, but I'd have them a bit closer to middle of the pack. I love Skubal and thought both the Flaherty and Maeda signings were good value.

Tigers have postseason potential. I picked them to grab a Wild Card spot. My colleague Anthony Franco has them winning the Central.
Waiver Claim Order
1:53
Is it purely based on previous regular season record? Or like the draft is the postseason reordered appropriately? Would Texas and Arizona be last on waiver claims if they wanted to make one?
Steve Adams
1:55
First month of the season is based on the prior year's standings. From that point on, it's based on current season's standings.

And to debunk the constantly misheld belief that waiver priority is league-specific, that is not the case. The old, now-defunct August trade waiver system was league-specific (i.e. entire AL gets a crack at an AL player when he's waived, THEN he goes through the NL).

I've personally confirmed (multiple times, just to be sure) with multiple MLB officials that it's just reverse standings, period, regardless of league.

When does skenes get the call?
Steve Adams
1:56
Sometime early this summer, probably

Why has Brogdon not been DFA'd yet?
Steve Adams
1:59
Matt Gelb wrote a piece this morning suggesting that his last outing may have been his final with the team. I can see that. He's out of options, struggling considerably, and the Phils will have some guys coming off the IL before too terribly long.
